Like it or not, Foles is about to get PAID!!!!

TheGhostofBlueGuy : 1/7/2019 12:15 am
By whom, who knows. But there is a little ice water in the veins there.

That 4th down throw to Tate was clutch. Some GM, somewhere just fell in love to the tune of $100 million.

Book it.....

Pretty damn tough to miss a throw on a simple 1-yard out where the WR makes a cut and is open

Agreed, but given the pressure of making sure to hit a receiver and going home, it was clutch, imo. We have seen, even with Eli this year, QBs missing that simple toss more than they should

who were doing the mental gymnastics of signing Foles this off-season to a below market deal to serve as a transition to the next rookie franchise QB. There is no denying the niche segment of fans that want anyone but Eli. Search back through last month's threads and there were a number of BBI'ers who wanted Foles.

With the likelihood that Foles will be getting paid, their supporting argument for signing Foles falls apart.

I couldn't keep up with the "lets sing bridgewater, lets sign fitzpatrick, lets sign, etc. threads. if there was a Foles one, where people expected to get him cheaply then "like it or not" makes sense.

I could not figure out why people would care.

Brace yourself. We have 2 months before Eli's roster bonus is due. The frequency of threads to advocate signing every trash QB will increase. There is a vocal niche segment that wants anyone but Eli.

I guess you missed the part where Leonard Floyd was right in his face and jumping at him. Foles had to fall away and deliver the ball at a different arm angle to get it around Floyd. It was a good throw.

A team will probably regret that.

Foles is good for what he's doing, short stretches, which is exactly what you want your backup QB to do.
Of course they'll regret it....

That's the first time I've ever mentioned Cousins and Foles in the same sentence, so you haven't seen me doing it.

Further, my comment was not based on their skill set, but rather the overall QB market and what they get paid.
Repalce Cousins with Alex Smith if you want.

I don’t see why the Eagles wouldn’t trade Wentz & keep Foles. One thing that is a joy is hearing all these Eagle fans get defensive at the mere mention of Foles being a better option than Wentz. Pederson/Foles works.

Here's my problem with the Foles' "success".

He started three games last year, regular season. Two of those were duds. His first playoff game was an equal dud.

This year, played five games. His first playoff game was a near dud, sans a late drive. Other scoring drive netted over 50 yards in penalties.

IMO, Foles "success" is really limited, although again he's got the one Super Bowl.

I kinda judge a QB over the long haul. Play a 16 game season. Take your team to the playoffs and win.

Now, that's not entirely Foles' fault (although to some degree it really is - he's a backup QB at age 30). But I think to rely on this game for the long haul is a huge mistake in mediocrity.
.
arcarsenal : 1/7/2019 11:53 am : link
It almost seems like Foles plays a lot of really crappy football when no one is really watching - and then when the spotlight is on him and the stage is the biggest, he manages to come up with some big games.

I think the perception of him is interesting because it sort of reflects that. He was also really bad in StL the year he spent there.

He's sort of hard to figure out - but I really wouldn't want to be the team that gives him his next contract.

My apologies - I know I saw Cousins and Foles compared in the same manner and thought it was you.

Personally I am not sure what to think about Foles. He is intriguing and I could see him finding success later in his career just as easily as I could see him not working out anywhere else but in a back up role in Philly.
Foles threw two INT's in the first half last night....
Britt in VA : 1/7/2019 1:15 pm : link
that would be considered "backbreaking" by BBI standards.

But the kicker missed so those aren't really discussed.

Foles is a good fit in the system, as somebody mentioned above. As a standalone, like Alex Smith, I think he's average, maybe even a little below. But sometimes the stars align for guys like Foles and Smith.
Foles already...
Chris in Philly : 1/7/2019 1:20 pm : link
hasn't worked out someplace else other than Philly. The last throw was a nice one. He was also mediocre throughout most of the game...
Britt..
FatMan in Charlotte : 1/7/2019 1:23 pm : link
funny you mention those throws. He had gotten away with floating several that were caught, then he started getting picked.

And if the Bears had won the game, most of the talk would've been about the Philly D giving up the tyardage or for Foles "clutch" TD throw.

funny how early INT's get ignored in most games (rightfully so)
At MOST he’ll get 15 mil per year, perhaps 1-2 more per year, imo.

Dak Prescott is rumored to be asking 28 million per... Alex Smith at 34 years old got 85 million guaranteed! Look at Kirk Cousins' contract.

No way Foles only gets 15 million per.

Dak can ASK all he wants. The difference is that those teams in need of a QB know that Foles has only succeeded in Philly and save for the Playoffs, has basically proven his worth as a PART-STARTER. The others, deserving or not, were all FULL-TIME starters. Perhaps he’ll get big money, but given his regular season body of work(not all that much), I don’t see a huge contract similar to the other full-timers. Imo

Even if he didn't work out, his replacement would likely be a draft pick and thus cost less... Making a $15m per year back up expensive but not cap killing.

Just another 3rd round Super Bowl QB.

As I have said so often, the idea that you need a "franchise QB" and that you need to get him in the first round is stupid.

Foles has won one, and may win 2, SBs (Third round, player #88). Wentz (First round, player #2) may never win one.

It does not matter where you pick. It matters a lot who does the picking.

More like almost anyone but Eli. Eli is overpaid. Eli is declining. I would not want a journeyman replacement that cost as much as Eli. I would rather roll with Eli. I want a young guy with mobility and the potential to get better. Use those cap dollars and get the best OL available if possible. Draft an OL or 2 high and make the offense go through Barkley while the unproven QB learns the ropes. If he doesn't pan out, draft a QB high in 2020.
It is too early to speculate...
EricJ : 1/7/2019 2:31 pm : link
and we have to wait to see how he does this weekend. Don't you think his pay day will look very different if he wins another superbowl vs if he looks like shit this weekend in a loss?

This logic is simply flawed.

Why are you comparing Foles to other QBs who have QB's their teams to SB's, playing fulls seasons?

Don't you see the difference. The guy is a backup QB whose SB victory map has spanned a small sample size.

You're better off throwing Trent Dilfer in the mix and saying "You can win a SB over a small sample size of games with low round picks".
The once..

FatMan in Charlotte : 1/7/2019 2:38 pm : link
have neither.

Personally, I'd rather sign a guy to make $4M a year as a true stop gap so $$ can be allocated to other areas of the roster. O draft a QB in the 1st and sink or swim with him. Or keep eli another year so there isn't a bunch of dead money.

all of those scenarios are better than signing foles and certainly better than Flacco
I find it rather halarious...
BillKo : 1/7/2019 2:44 pm : link
...that a QB who basically starts the end of the season - and wins a Super Bowl - is comparable to a guy who plays the entire season and does it.

There is a difference. Distinctly.

It's like when callers dial up Francessa and mock Eli that he's only played one game - meaning the Super Bowl wins. Francessa responded by saying "sure, the Giants just called him up the day of the Super Bowl and asked 'Can you play today, we need someone'".

I honestly think people on here would compare Foles winning two SBs to Eli's two SB's.

When in reality, there's a huge difference.
Ha, they've actually already started to do that...
Britt in VA : 1/7/2019 2:51 pm : link
although in veiled sort of way. They have certainly begun asking leading questions in regards to it.
