and have mostly gone under radar as people have assumed Eagles can't afford hi option and Foles will go straight to FA.
Linked is article that discusses the ins and outs and has an on-air clip from Ian Rapoport on the subject.
Looks to me that Eagles will in fact pick up Foles' $20.7M option for next season, and then one of two scenarios will play out.
1. Foles declines to pay his $2M option buyout and Eagles trade him with his $20.7M contract, probably with some consulting on acceptable trade destinations.
2. Foles pays the $2M buyout; Eagles then franchise tag him for $23-25M and seek to trade him with tag.
As the article mentions, these scenarios on their face carry considerable risk for the Eagles because they really can't afford to keep Foles.
But I think Rapoport is right that Eagles will bet on the league's desperation for QBs and wind up with a draft pick, maybe second round. Philly Voice - ( New Window )

Awful at least 50% of the time, yet clutch in the playoffs. Isn't that how most would describe Eli's career?

That’s a lot of good points. The Eagles always manage to get good deals for players as well.
While extremely unlikely, say the Eagles repeat and win it all with Foles, or for that matter even get close. Are they really just gonna let him go because they have Wentz? Wentz looked really good in 2017 before the injury but will he get back to form or is he gonna fall apart like an RG3 type of problem?
The real question is more like will Foles be considered for the Â
hatred carries over to a player. Who gives a crap if he floated a couple if they were completed passes or weren't intercepted.
He's already won a Super Bowl. He took a dead team and got them to the playoffs by beating the Rams on the road and then beat the #1 defense at their home.
Oh, so he had a bad couple years. So what, since then he has played very well. So what, he's not Andrew Luck (not many are).
He doesn't act like a douche. Runs his offense well and does what QBs need to do - win. Given the right system he does well and wins. The Giants could do worse, not that I really want him on the Giants, but I wouldn't mind.
Everyone agrees that Wentz is a better QB. But the Eagles are a better team with Foles. Wentz has already shown a propensity to be injured based on his style of play. Back injuries tend to linger and the throwing motion will continue to torque the muscles perhaps aggravating any recovery. If Foles goes to New Orleans and keeps it close (nevermind a win), that will be more of an accomplishment than when Wentz got destroyed by the Saints.
Foles is expected to have another 8 years of solid production. If they can pay Foles and flip Wentz for picks, it might yield a greater return both as a financial commitment to the QB1 position and the return of draft capital for Wentz.
RE: The real question is more like will Foles be considered for the Â
Pretty damn tough to miss a throw on a simple 1-yard out where the WR makes a cut and is open
Agreed, but given the pressure of making sure to hit a receiver and going home, it was clutch, imo. We have seen, even with Eli this year, QBs missing that simple toss more than they should
who were doing the mental gymnastics of signing Foles this off-season to a below market deal to serve as a transition to the next rookie franchise QB. There is no denying the niche segment of fans that want anyone but Eli. Search back through last month's threads and there were a number of BBI'ers who wanted Foles.
With the likelihood that Foles will be getting paid, their supporting argument for signing Foles falls apart.
but my apologies if there was a groundswell advocating for it.
I couldn't keep up with the "lets sing bridgewater, lets sign fitzpatrick, lets sign, etc. threads. if there was a Foles one, where people expected to get him cheaply then "like it or not" makes sense.
How come no mention of horrible interceptions he threw yesterday, one in the end zone when they were driving. If that was Eli that would be all they would be talking about today even if he had won the game.
but my apologies if there was a groundswell advocating for it.

I could not figure out why people would care.
Brace yourself. We have 2 months before Eli's roster bonus is due. The frequency of threads to advocate signing every trash QB will increase. There is a vocal niche segment that wants anyone but Eli.

I guess you missed the part where Leonard Floyd was right in his face and jumping at him. Foles had to fall away and deliver the ball at a different arm angle to get it around Floyd. It was a good throw.

It was a great throw with Floyd in his face as you said...man, people sometimes...my God.
I don’t see why the Eagles wouldn’t trade Wentz & keep Foles. One thing that is a joy is hearing all these Eagle fans get defensive at the mere mention of Foles being a better option than Wentz. Pederson/Foles works.
do you not see a fundamental difference between Cousins and Foles?
I'll give you a hint - only one has had any success at all to speak of.
(I am not saying Foles is worth $25m per but I have seen you and others compare him to Cousins like they are equals)
Here's my problem with the Foles' "success".
He started three games last year, regular season. Two of those were duds. His first playoff game was an equal dud.
This year, played five games. His first playoff game was a near dud, sans a late drive. Other scoring drive netted over 50 yards in penalties.
IMO, Foles "success" is really limited, although again he's got the one Super Bowl.
I kinda judge a QB over the long haul. Play a 16 game season. Take your team to the playoffs and win.
Now, that's not entirely Foles' fault (although to some degree it really is - he's a backup QB at age 30). But I think to rely on this game for the long haul is a huge mistake in mediocrity.
It almost seems like Foles plays a lot of really crappy football when no one is really watching - and then when the spotlight is on him and the stage is the biggest, he manages to come up with some big games.
I think the perception of him is interesting because it sort of reflects that. He was also really bad in StL the year he spent there.
He's sort of hard to figure out - but I really wouldn't want to be the team that gives him his next contract.
RE: Bottom line is that this thread is about Foles getting paid.... Â
My apologies - I know I saw Cousins and Foles compared in the same manner and thought it was you.
Personally I am not sure what to think about Foles. He is intriguing and I could see him finding success later in his career just as easily as I could see him not working out anywhere else but in a back up role in Philly.
Foles threw two INT's in the first half last night.... Â
that would be considered "backbreaking" by BBI standards.
But the kicker missed so those aren't really discussed.
Foles is a good fit in the system, as somebody mentioned above. As a standalone, like Alex Smith, I think he's average, maybe even a little below. But sometimes the stars align for guys like Foles and Smith.
What did Eli's Jints score vs that D?

I suspect this is a jab at those who consider Eli HOF worthy, but this is really dumb.

Nothing is easy when it’s 4th and goal and your season is on the line, give the man his due.
We know how it would be looked at here.
It was practically pitch and catch with the WR making a hard cut to get open.
All this talk about a QB who is a caddy. Sheesh.
A team will probably regret that.
Foles is good for what he's doing, short stretches, which is exactly what you want your backup QB to do.
I'll give you a hint - only one has had any success at all to speak of.

That's the first time I've ever mentioned Cousins and Foles in the same sentence, so you haven't seen me doing it.
Further, my comment was not based on their skill set, but rather the overall QB market and what they get paid.
However, I doubt he will give whatever team pays him return on their investment.

And if the Bears had won the game, most of the talk would've been about the Philly D giving up the tyardage or for Foles "clutch" TD throw.
funny how early INT's get ignored in most games (rightfully so)
