USA Today: 10 worst missed FGs in Playoff History

Big Blue '56 : 1/7/2019 7:25 am
Parkeyís is #10, you can guess who was #1. Opinions appreciated.
Link - ( New Window )
I'd move Walsh and Kaeding up to 3 and 4

Hard to argue with the first two.
Always thought Norwood got a bad rap
BillT : 1/7/2019 7:35 am : link
47 yards, outdoors on grass was never better than a 50/50 proposition for most any kicker back them. That was in the Ď80s when anything past 45 yards was considered a very long kick.
Personally I put #3 and 4 each up a spot and
bhill410 : 1/7/2019 7:39 am : link
Gary Andersonís down to 4. Fact is they were for survival, Anderson was up a td.

Iirc, wasnít Norwood something like 1-6 on grass from that distance coming into the game?

Walsh morning missed a...

27 yarder at home to win the game. Just a total chip shot.

That has to be higher based on the success rate at that distance.
Thinking about it
jeff57 : 1/7/2019 7:53 am : link
Parkey's should be higher.
Now theyíre showing clips that Parkeyís kick
Big Blue '56 : 1/7/2019 8:03 am : link
was partially blocked. If so, than his miss wouldnít be as egegious, imv
Don Chandlerís OT

Kick, 1965. Colts against Packers for pre SB championship. Oh, wait. Refs called it good.

Thatís a GREAT recall..Obviously, I was a big DC fan when he was with us, but that kick was unquestionably no good, imv

Not just your view. Chandler agrees. NFL agreed and extended height of goal posts and repositioned refs after that. It was on the frozen tundra. I think refs were cold and wanted to end it.

Did he? Iím blanking on that
Well, that one last night was pretty bad
exiled : 1/7/2019 8:29 am : link
Since one of the Eagles got a hand on it, itís not on the kicker, but the miss in that situation is about as bad as it gets. That sucked last night.

Chandler looked away and hung his head as kick was in the air. I think I saw an article where he said he thought it was a miss.
Hand
jeff57 : 1/7/2019 8:51 am : link
Don't know if it was the blocker's fault or the kick started too low. What made it worse is him making the kick originally.
Guess the Giants/Niners
upstatenyg : 1/7/2019 9:03 am : link
Non kick and subsequent NFL announcement that they made a mistake doesnt make the list since didn't kick it?

Unless the line didn't block anyone I don't understand that a partially tipped kick isn't on the kicker.... it's not like this was a 50 yarder.... it's a kickers job to get height on his kick too

Absolutely.

There wasn't any deep penetration thru the line.

That's an average range kick these days, kicker needs to get the height on it or it's on him.

Love how the pundits can't simply admit the Eagles won a game on a missed kick, has to be something they did to cause it LOL

He was 1-7
And Norwood was a Matt Bahr type kicker
Greg from LI : 1/7/2019 10:37 am : link
Considered automatic on 40 yards and in but without much range. They're pretty much extinct now, but there used to be a fair number of guys like that. It was a kick that was simply out of Norwood's ability to make consistently.

Honestly, if the teams had been reversed, I wouldn't have been overly confident of Bahr hitting the same kick. He was only 5-9 on 40-49 yard kicks that year.
Didnít Matt Bahr miss a critical kick in the early (?) Ď80s
Big Blue '56 : 1/7/2019 10:52 am : link
while with Cleveland that caused them a playoff spot?

Yup, thatís how I remember it. The ďTom MatteĒ game
Key Components (in my view):
teso56 : 1/7/2019 12:18 pm : link
1) Ease of kick
2) Would team have DEFINITELY WON if kick made
3) Pain for fanbase and team

Based on above the Walsh kick and Brien kicks should be higher.

1 and 2 are correct.
Imagine how history would remember Tynes
mfsd : 1/7/2019 12:32 pm : link
Had he not been able to nail the game winner in our ice bowl win in Green Bay in January 2008.

Brutal conditions would always be a mitigating factor of course, but he went from goat to hero with one legendary kick
the more painful part
upstatenyg : 1/7/2019 12:37 pm : link
is that apparently he sucked during the season, missed and hit up rights ranking him 31 of 32 teams. The fact that they didn't solidify this during the season is a shame.

Seattle fans have a right to bitch also since there was no reliable back up for Janakowski on Sun, they couldn't kick XP's or even have a chance for the on sides kick.

Kickers are an important part of the equation.
