Not wrong, thought the same thing with Shurmur.

This was the only known interview for #Patriots OC Josh McDaniels, so the LaFleur hire for the #Packers likely means Josh is back in New England for another year.

Got out of Case Keenum.
What's his connection to Rodgers?
Eman11 : 1/7/2019 6:26 pm : link
I'd have to imagine there is one but if not they must've run this past him no? I can't see GB hiring anyone who he wouldn't want, or isn't at least familiar with and I doubt they'd hire someone not knowing if they'd get along.

Is a great hire studied under mcvey and Shan Shan. Also mariota injured all year and delanie out early. Got best out of Henry and had to use Blaine gabbert a few games.

I agree with this. He is more of the hot offensive guy than anything. Not sure how he'll do as a HC but with all these teams wanting the next McVay ge might be the best bet. Hard to judge him in Tennessee. His QB is always hurt. They had issues at WR. Walker was lost for the year then I also believe so was Jonnu Smith. Didn't they have injuries along to OL too?

I heard it suggested that Rodgers loves Philbin
Chris684 : 1/7/2019 6:49 pm : link
And they would keep him in place to see through the remainder of Rodgers’s career and make the next big move after that. This is the opposite of that.

Good for GB, they must really like the guy.

when Goff broke out. The league is obsessed with young offensive minds and QB gurus. They don't have to accomplish much just be associated with and have their praises sung by the right people.

That's like giving Sean Payton's OCs the credit for the work he's done. Was all McVey in LA the past two years.

Titans offense was brutal this year and unimaginative. I don't see this ending well. Somebody said about the Titans don't have any receivers - Corey Davis is a player 20 teams would kill for. Criminally underused.

I doubt it. Speaking of the trend of HC hires, I’m ready for a defensive minded HC. The trend is to find the next McVay, but it amazes me that Parcells was the last defensive minded HC this team has had.

Teams should represent where they play. What about north jersey/NY says “west coast offense”? You suggested Jim Schwartz in another thread who I think is an asshole, but maybe this team needs an asshole. I miss the days of teams being scared to play in the Meadowlands.

I don’t mean to pile on Shurmur either, but I’d love to see a tough minded, defensive HC here to oversee the roster. Honestly, I’d think this would align more with Gettleman as well.
I want a guy who is an organizer and a program builder
Go Terps : 1/7/2019 8:13 pm : link
I don't want a coordinator with his face in a play sheet the whole game, which is what we have now.

I know he had a bad day yesterday, but if Harbaugh were available I'd hire him in a second...and his background is special teams. Maybe that's an argument for talking to Dave Toub in KC. As for Schwartz, his level of awareness in last year's Super Bowl really stuck with me. It's an awareness (time, score, game flow) we'd expect to be obvious in a coach, but we repeatedly around the league and on our own sideline that it isn't.

I expect Shurmur to only be here another season or two. I think it's worth keeping an eye on other teams' sidelines, the hot college prospects, etc. It won't be long.

Jim Schwartz?

Am I reading this correctly?

He has a career .360ish win pctg in a pretty good sample size.

He took over an 0-16 Detroit team and had them at 10-6 in his third year. It fell apart after that, but it was his first job and it was in a tough city to win. And since he's been in Philly he's done a great job as their DC. Again, I'm not saying he should definitely be the guy, just that I'd talk to him.
Agreed on a program builder..
Sean : 1/7/2019 8:24 pm : link
it’s a shame the NFL is such a sub-contractor/copy cat league with regards to head coaches. It’s so predictable, find the young offensive specialist. The Ravens would be nuts to get rid of Harbaugh.

So many of these teams are incompetent, it’s amazing. Look at the Cardinals for example. Last year Brian Flores was within a hair of getting that job - they raved about him. A year later after firing Wilks, they aren’t interviewing Flores. You can’t make this stuff up.
Fair enough

But a lot of those points are very similar to the ones used in selecting Shurmur.

First stint was with losing org.

You point to Schwartz in the SB while others pointed to Shurmur with Keenum.

For the record, I didn’t want Shurmur here although I’m willing to give him a fair chance now that he was hired. I wouldn’t want to hire Schwartz even if I had very limited options.
A common approach seems to be...
Go Terps : 1/7/2019 8:28 pm : link
"Let's draft a young QB and get a QB specialist HC to work with him." I think that's a mistake...the head coach has to have a lot more responsibility than that.

If you want a specialist to work with the QB, go get Norv Turner or someone like him to be the OC or QB coach. But I want the head coach knowing what is going on on the field at all times and making the macro decisions that directly impact games.

I was worried about Shurmur getting his lunch handed to him in Philly in the NFCC game. He got through his scripted 15 or so plays, and then his team was shut out (by Schwartz's defense) the rest of the game. If you're going to hire a coordinator to be the head coach, why hire the guy that just got exposed by a division rival with the Super Bowl on the line?

And Schwartz had some success in Detroit. Shurmur hasn't had any anywhere.
Schwartz’s sample size much larger than Shurmur’s
Chris684 : 1/7/2019 8:39 pm : link
and again, the success in Detroit was very, very limited.

Todd Bowles has a decent season with the Jets, McAdoo did here. Sometimes mostly bad coaches have one off successful seasons.

I wouldn’t go too crazy about anything Schwartz has done, but that’s just me.

As far as the title game last year, who was working with a more talented unit? Schwartz and that Eagles defensive front? Or Shurmur with Case Keenum?
Shurmur has immense pressure on him next year..
Sean : 1/7/2019 8:49 pm : link
His career record is already in the top 10 worst all time winning percentage with a minimum of 50 games. Another 5-6 win season and that career record is historically bad.

He went to Tennessee to call his own plays if I am not mistaken.
My firm belief

If you are hiring a Head Coach, go with a candidate whose background is with a position you are strong at. The assistant coaches groom the players. The Head Coach needs to see the big picture and you want him to hire the right assistants to groom your players not have a preconceived notion and prove incapable of adapting.

And how did that work out?

I'm sorry but something is a little off when how many African American coaches are fired this offseason ... some in their first season with no talent to work with like Wilks ... and someone who as an OC for the first time called plays and was horrendous at it... gets to be HC of Packers

I'm not liberal, I'm not into conspiracy theories... even I'm like 'whoa' when I see this.
