NFT: My neighbors dog a hit & run victim - ring/nest question

pjcas18 : 1/7/2019 8:09 pm
I looked out the window this morning (I work from home) and saw a police car on my street driving very slowly by my house. this is unusual. he stops in front of my house and puts his lights on. I thought WTF?

I look outside and I saw two other police cars with their lights on and a car (a Lexus SUV) in the middle of the road stopped. then I saw it. An animal in the street. We have some wildlife, I thought maybe a fox or coyote. I ran out to see what it was and what happened and the neighbors small dog was lying there, breathing, but guts all over the street. it was going to die. It was heart breaking.

the car that stopped was a woman who just saw the dog lying there, not the person who hit it.

After being heartbroken I was pissed. Pissed at the neighbor who lets their dog roam around outside unattended. She also came out with her 3 year old kid in her arms - the police officer had to "yell" at her to get the kid out of there. Who brings their kid out to look at their dog dying in the street? It was a weird looking dog. first time I saw it I told my wife to get my phone, there's a baby fox in the neighbors yard. Turns out that was their dog. Much bigger than a chihuahua similar in size to a Jack Russell (for example) but looked like a fox, and I was obviously pissed that someone could run over an animal and take off.

Only thing I can think of is that maybe they didn't realize they even hit the dog. It was so small, and frail, and if it was a school bus or UPS driver or something (no big trucks go on our street - it's middle of suburbia) they might not even realize it.

Anyway, to make a long story less long, point of my post is to ask about home surveillance systems.

the police asked all the neighbors if anyone had home surveillance systems that might have captured the street.

I'd been considering a Ring or Nest system for a while for no real reason, nothing like this happens in my neighborhood but felt like can't hurt to have one, does anyone have experience with these? My house has vinyl siding, so I need to consider that when considering installs.

Thanks for the advice and sorry for sharing this story to get to my question.

I can’t answer your question..

I really like it. Easy to hook up, I screwed it right through my vinyl siding. Took me 5 minutes, took another couple minutes to set it up on the wifi.

Thanks. How does it work, is it just motion sensor or always on? does it record video to a cloud storage site?

How wide does it go, is it just walkway/steps/porch or can it cover say 50 feet of grass out to the street too?

Alarm system can be event triggered too. I have ADT so my camera has a pretty wide angle - my camera is on the corner of my garage and spans my driveway all the way to the walkway to the pathway to much front door. I've looked into a doorbell camera and others like the ring floodlight but don't really want to pay a second monthly fee.

Ha, definitely I felt this post was beez-like even as I was writing it, unfortunately it's true and I felt like adding the reason why I wanted the home surveillance system when normally I'd probably just ask for home surveillance system advice.

Isn't that a crime? Well either way, like I said it's suburbia, three cops showed up to the "scene".

I doubt it's a crime to hit a dog that has run out onto the road in front of your car.

nope. they called animal control. by the time animal control got there the dog was gone. they scooped it up and put it in a box one of the neighbors brought out and they left it on the owner's front porch (after the officer yelled at the owner she brought her kid back in the house in tears).

leaving the scene though? I don't know.

either way the woman who stopped called the police, and they showed up in full force (no SWAT team though) and they felt like it was worthy enough incident to "canvass the neighborhood" to see if anyone saw anything and who had a home surveillance system that may have caught the incident.

No, that wasn't me. I remember the thread though about that though.

I started a thread about a neighbor whose dog crapped on a different neighbors lawn and the father walking the dog left the crap there. that story is completely different neighbors from this and a different dog and a 3rd neighbor narc-ed on the dog walker and a confrontation ensued.

If they did realize they hit an animal they probably looked in the rear view mirror and thought it was a fox and not a pet.

kind of hits home for me as a kid I had a small beagle when I was around 4 was playing in the hard with it and he squeezed out between two fence posts and ran into the streets and got killed by a car, police showed up and they put it in a box. It totally sucked after that I never was a dog person until my teenage daughter kept wanting one and I finally gave in and adopted a beagle mix. one of the greatest things I did. Dog is a family member to me and always around me seeing I work from home.

relax, there is no blame game, no one's delicate sensibilities were offended until yours were with this blame game bullshit.

The cops were there and they were treating it like it was a crime. They asked every neighbor who was home within a reasonable difference if they had a surveillance system facing the street. why do you think they asked that?

And guess what, I looked it up and it's the law in Massachusetts (and many states) if you hit a dog or cat by law you need to report it to the owner (or the police).

I said in my OP I was pissed at the dog owner and I felt bad for the kid (and they have other kids who came home to find their dog had been killed), this isn't the first time (per other neighbors) their dog has run into the street or been out unattended and my first thought weren't who to blame, but I followed the lead of the police.
I have a Ring....

Works great. You can answer on any device and it records 30 seconds when motion activates it. You have a subscribe if you want access to the videos after the first 39 days though - $30 per year per camera.

Installation is a snap. Even you could probably do it. :)
I don't know what the letter of the law is
kennyd : 1/7/2019 10:02 pm : link
but I'd sure as well like to know who the asshole is that runs over a dog and just drives a way. If it is a law then hell yeah they should be prosecuted. Either way a really shitty thing to do (the driving away part, accidents happen). And I know it's not possible but the owners should never be allowed to have an animal again.
That's a....long-winded way to ask about camera systems
Knineteen : 1/7/2019 10:03 pm : link
but anyways...

I bought a 4 camera DVR system from NewEgg with capabilities to support up to 8 cameras.
Installed the cameras under my soffits and hard-wired them back to the DVR unit.
Obviously, not the easiest installation, but definitely the most robust and maintenance-free. Also, a lot cheaper than all the gimmick camera systems out there.
I saw a lady over a dead dog in the street a couple years ago.
madgiantscow009 : 1/7/2019 10:04 pm : link
I told her to get a blanket from her house. While she was gone I wrapped it up in a thin sheet I had and moved my car up so it hid the viscera; I guess in my mind it would be more traumatic to have to see that too. It was night and I wasn't sure she processed the whole thing yet. I then carried it to her house for her. The saddest part to me was the dog had a similar aged brother that would now live without him. It wasn't in my neighborhood, I was just cutting down a side street.

We had a dog get hit by a car that lived, but it was still really traumatic.

That was I Love Clams Casino with the random car parking on his street.

I have the Blink XT outdoor camera. Basically the same features as the others, but you don’t have to pay a cloud storage fee. They store your motion clips for 30 days, and you can also download any as well to you devices if you wanted to keep them longer. Obviously it works with Alexa and all those things.

Did you read your own post I quoted. "Isn't it a crime?"....I am quite sensible.
I didn't know what was or wasn't a crime in any way
pjcas18 : 1/7/2019 10:39 pm : link
with running over any animals before this incident.

the fact the police showed up at the scene and "investigated" led me to assume there must be something criminal involved in the incident.

I can't believe running over a dog that darts into the street is a crime (if that's what happened), since I don't think that's even a crime with a human.

but leaving the scene I assumed was since the police were acting that way. otherwise they would have probably said "call animal control" and left. right?

that's the extent of my "blame game" and based on my google "research" it sounds like I was correct.

whether or not you want to blame someone, not stopping when you run over someone's dog is a pretty shitty thing to do that a person needs to be called out for even if not cited for the crime (which carries a fine only anyway - the extent of my "blame game").

but, as I mentioned in my OP, the dog was small, I wouldn't be surprised if the person that hit it might not have even realized it. but again, not my point.

Good response. I couldn't agree more. Regardless of whether it's a crime and any blame is assigned, hitting a dog and leaving the scene is a shitty thing to do. Animals often behave better than humans...and this is a good example.

The across the street neighbor told me (at the scene) that the dog is often in the street or otherwise outside unattended. that's why I was pissed. no assumption made other than the other neighbor who told me this was being truthful. She said she had to bring their dog over to their house multiple times (from her yard).

In fact when the police were leaving they said if we see their other dog in the street (they have a second dog) to call the police.
