I looked out the window this morning (I work from home) and saw a police car on my street driving very slowly by my house. this is unusual. he stops in front of my house and puts his lights on. I thought WTF?
I look outside and I saw two other police cars with their lights on and a car (a Lexus SUV) in the middle of the road stopped. then I saw it. An animal in the street. We have some wildlife, I thought maybe a fox or coyote. I ran out to see what it was and what happened and the neighbors small dog was lying there, breathing, but guts all over the street. it was going to die. It was heart breaking.
the car that stopped was a woman who just saw the dog lying there, not the person who hit it.
After being heartbroken I was pissed. Pissed at the neighbor who lets their dog roam around outside unattended. She also came out with her 3 year old kid in her arms - the police officer had to "yell" at her to get the kid out of there. Who brings their kid out to look at their dog dying in the street? It was a weird looking dog. first time I saw it I told my wife to get my phone, there's a baby fox in the neighbors yard. Turns out that was their dog. Much bigger than a chihuahua similar in size to a Jack Russell (for example) but looked like a fox, and I was obviously pissed that someone could run over an animal and take off.
Only thing I can think of is that maybe they didn't realize they even hit the dog. It was so small, and frail, and if it was a school bus or UPS driver or something (no big trucks go on our street - it's middle of suburbia) they might not even realize it.
Anyway, to make a long story less long, point of my post is to ask about home surveillance systems.
the police asked all the neighbors if anyone had home surveillance systems that might have captured the street.
I'd been considering a Ring or Nest system for a while for no real reason, nothing like this happens in my neighborhood but felt like can't hurt to have one, does anyone have experience with these? My house has vinyl siding, so I need to consider that when considering installs.

Ha, definitely I felt this post was beez-like even as I was writing it, unfortunately it's true and I felt like adding the reason why I wanted the home surveillance system when normally I'd probably just ask for home surveillance system advice.

nope. they called animal control. by the time animal control got there the dog was gone. they scooped it up and put it in a box one of the neighbors brought out and they left it on the owner's front porch (after the officer yelled at the owner she brought her kid back in the house in tears).

either way the woman who stopped called the police, and they showed up in full force (no SWAT team though) and they felt like it was worthy enough incident to "canvass the neighborhood" to see if anyone saw anything and who had a home surveillance system that may have caught the incident.

I started a thread about a neighbor whose dog crapped on a different neighbors lawn and the father walking the dog left the crap there. that story is completely different neighbors from this and a different dog and a 3rd neighbor narc-ed on the dog walker and a confrontation ensued.
that's not really fair, I want to catch the person who does this or anything else like it in the future. I'm not worried about my property.

The cops were there and they were treating it like it was a crime. They asked every neighbor who was home within a reasonable difference if they had a surveillance system facing the street. why do you think they asked that?
And guess what, I looked it up and it's the law in Massachusetts (and many states) if you hit a dog or cat by law you need to report it to the owner (or the police).
I said in my OP I was pissed at the dog owner and I felt bad for the kid (and they have other kids who came home to find their dog had been killed), this isn't the first time (per other neighbors) their dog has run into the street or been out unattended and my first thought weren't who to blame, but I followed the lead of the police.
Installation is a snap. Even you could probably do it. :)
I bought a 4 camera DVR system from NewEgg with capabilities to support up to 8 cameras.
Installed the cameras under my soffits and hard-wired them back to the DVR unit.
Obviously, not the easiest installation, but definitely the most robust and maintenance-free. Also, a lot cheaper than all the gimmick camera systems out there.
We had a dog get hit by a car that lived, but it was still really traumatic.

I have the Blink XT outdoor camera. Basically the same features as the others, but you don’t have to pay a cloud storage fee. They store your motion clips for 30 days, and you can also download any as well to you devices if you wanted to keep them longer. Obviously it works with Alexa and all those things.

I can't believe running over a dog that darts into the street is a crime (if that's what happened), since I don't think that's even a crime with a human.

Good response. I couldn't agree more. Regardless of whether it's a crime and any blame is assigned, hitting a dog and leaving the scene is a shitty thing to do. Animals often behave better than humans...and this is a good example.
Our dog has gotten outside without us even knowing. It can happen. For example, garage door is open, mudroom door is open when unloading groceries.
Sometimes you dont even realize it for a few minutes which is all it takes to be hit by a car.

The across the street neighbor told me (at the scene) that the dog is often in the street or otherwise outside unattended. that's why I was pissed. no assumption made other than the other neighbor who told me this was being truthful. She said she had to bring their dog over to their house multiple times (from her yard).
In fact when the police were leaving they said if we see their other dog in the street (they have a second dog) to call the police.
I was able to see where my missing trashcan went yesterday!
