I met him this past summer
Dr. D : 1/7/2019 8:38 pm : link
at a seafood market/restaurant in Mayport FL. He seemed reglar, no jewlz.

My daughter pointed out that we were wearing the same shoes (Yeezys - that she bought for me. She later told me that mine were knockoffs! Oh well, she was 13 when she bought 'em, she didn't know at the time and they look legit.. prolly too much info.)
I mentioned this a few weeks ago.

Malik was/is expecting it. He realizes his cap hit is too large and they drafted Taven Bryant in the bottom of the first last year. There will be more blood-letting in Jax.
btw, I didn't know who he was at first

but sensed he was a Jaguar. Besides his physical stature/appearance, he was being treated like a celebrity, so without knowing exactly who he was, I went up to him, patted him on the shoulder and said "good luck man". He smiled and said "thanks man".

After he walked out, I asked the restaurant guy who was that? and he said Malik Jackson.

Jags are in a tough cap situation.
He had a weird contract after his Denver SB.
Diver_Down : 1/7/2019 8:58 pm : link
It was reported to be a big deal at the time, but there was a minimal signing bonus. Instead, they guaranteed his 2016, 2017, and most of the 2018 salaries. He has no more guarantees on his contract, but he has been banking a lot of coin as his salary has been $13+M for the past 2 years. He has 3 years remaining at $13+M for each of the three so they will save $11M on the cap as there is only $2M of dead cap.

He is still a very good player and only 28. Just not worth $13+M/yr. I have no idea what the market will be for him as he has been overshadowed by Calais and Ngakoue on that DL
cut Bortles

Bortles will be gone. But they had to in order to lower his cap hit. His 5th year option was guaranteed when he developed a "wrist" issue at the end of 2018 season. He was unable to pass a physical so the Jags were on the hook. They gambled in the hope that he would improve. They lost. It happens, but the cap hit isn't terrible with Blake. If he is designated as a post 6/1 cut, the dead cap for 2019 will be $11.5M (about what they save from cutting Malik) and $5M in 2020.
He's a pure 4-3 DT

Not sure how he fits Bettcher's 3-4
Didn’t he thrive in a 3-4 in Denver?

.
Pretty sure Wade Philips used a 4-3

2015 SB team was Derek Wolfe - Sylvester Williams - Malik Jackson.
I see him as a productive pass rusher who was also very good vs run. DEN had DeMarcus Ware as a LB, although he did have his hand down quite a bit I think.
He would be an improvement, but with all the DE talent in this draft, is it wise spending FA$ on him?
Jags window already closing

Doesn't last long in the NFL. That's why you need to win it when you are in it and don't go with the "We'll get them next year" theory.
Is he better than what
Photoguy : 1/8/2019 5:55 pm : link
we have already?

Can we get him at a CAP friendly price?

How is he in the locker room?

Where does he fit in the defensive scheme?

Those are my questions.
Forget the 3-4/4-3 defense

Jackson is a generally 3/4 tech DL.

Bettcher has almost all the DL on the team playing the 3/4 tech at various times. Tomlinson plays it almost exclusively. Wynn has played it but often moves out to a 5/6 tech. Edwards has played the 0/1/2 tech, 3/4 tech and even a 5 tech at times. BJ Hill and RJ MacIntosh have been playing 1/2 tech and 3/4 tech. Mauro has been mostly a 5 tech, but sometimes a 3/4 tech.

So there are plenty of 3/4 tech looks for a guy like Jackson to play in Bettcher's defense.

Whether the Giants want him, and what he would cost are the only questions.

You guys have to stop with this shit. We're talking techniques not schemes. He's not a pure 4-3 anything, he can probably play the 5, the 3 and the 1 or 0 in a pinch. The days of the 1.5 gapping 4-3 DT is over and has been for about 10 years. All of these fronts are multiple and are based on blends of front 7 techniques. Stop with this ill informed non football knowing anything BS that so and so is a pure anything. Aaron Donald just won Defensive MVP as an undersized 3T in a 3-4 where supposedly he wouldn't fit. Learn what the f you are talking about before you make claims you can't possibly explain or backup. Malik Jackson is a 6-7 run stuffing DT with some upfield burst who helped a 3-4 in Denver win a SB. Next contestant please, this guy sucks.
