NGT: Greatest Team Ever?

allstarjim : 1/8/2019 1:04 am
Clemson absolutely rocked an undefeated Alabama team tonight. Thoroughly dominated. Every big play they needed to make, they made it.

I had one doubt about Clemson in this game...could the freshman QB answer the bell against this Alabama defense, this front featuring Quennen Williams? Hell yes he could. This 19 year old made the most dominant college football program in the nation his bitch. I don't mean to be harsh but Trevor Lawrence could run for Governor tomorrow of South Carolina and probably take 90% of the vote.

Not to be outdone, Clemson's defense was...fill in the adjective. Inspiring, dominating, exceptional, and well-coordinated, well-coached, well-executed. They not only worked as a team but individuals making huge plays in every unit.

Big 4th quarter goal line stand by Clemson with a 1st and Goal by Alabama at the 1 yard line, and Clemson just shut them down, owned them, rag-dolled them to totally steal their heart, beat their spirit down, crushed their will.

But it was all night. Big plays in the secondary, linebackers going sideline to sideline, Christian Wilkins shedding blocks and making plays in the backfield.

This was an Alabama offense that was blind-sided, stupefied, and shocked by a Clemson defense that came to harvest their very souls. There is not another completely inspired performance against as vaunted an offensive team that I can remember at any level.

This Clemson team, at 15-0, I submit to you, is the greatest college football champion of all time. You tell me a team better so that I may scoff in your general direction.

And oh yeah, might as well give the next two Heismans to Trevor Lawrence right now.

And I'm not even a Clemson fan.

then let’s talk. So you need to give this time.

Until then, see the 2001 Miami Hurricanes.
Just to round out my Miami comment...

Miami should have been back to back champions if they didn’t get completely hosed in the championship game against Ohio State.

That PI call in OT was one of the great fixes I’ve ever seen...

Please. The Hurricanes of 2001 never even played a team as good as this 'Bama team that was thoroughly dominated.

Trevor Lawrence will go #1 in the 2021 draft. The first rounders on this Clemson squad will rival any team, and this Clemson team won 15 games, 3 more than the 'Canes, and DOMINATED the #3 Notre Dame team and the #1 'Bama team along the way, as well as other ranked opponents.

I think with what Clemson did tonight, they would beat the brakes off that 2001 Hurricanes team.

So it's the '01 Hurricanes' fault that they didn't play a team as good as 2018 'Bama?

They outscored their opponents 512-117.

38 players from that roster would go on to be drafted into the NFL, 17 of which where selected in the 1st round. 13 players would go on to be pro bowlers in the NFL. 13. And those 13 guys combined for 43 total trips to the pro bowl. Even as an NFL team they would have been formidable for Christ's sakes.

You really have to be careful and know your facts before you put any team ahead of that '01 Miami team. It is me who is the doing the scoffing in your direction, my friend.

Trevor Lawrence >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Ken Dorsey

Most important position on the field.

Alabama was considered one of the best teams of all-time, and Clemson routed them. Dominated them. Embarrassed them. Bullied them, took their lunch money.

You don't think this Clemson team will have 17 players go in the first round of the draft? I'd wager that they will have more.

As good as that Miami offense was, Alabama's offense with Tua, Jeudy, and that stable of RBs with Damien Harris, Josh Jacobs, Najee Harris, that offensive line.

The question isn't if Clemson is better than that Miami team. The question is if Clemson just dominated a team that is better than that Miami team.
That Miami team was absolutely loaded.
mattyblue : 1/8/2019 4:38 am : link
Some of the players that were mostly on the bench that year would go on to be all pros. Who needs a QB when you have a backfield of Clinton Portis, Willis McGahee, and Frank Gore with Andre Johnson and Shockey downfield and their defense was even more star studded. Antrel Rolle, Ed Reed, Sean Taylor, and Vilma come to mind. (Could be wrong on some players)

In all fairness, I haven’t watched a lot of college football in years so I wouldn’t argue against your statement Jim. For all I know Clemson could be the better team I really wouldn’t know, but that 2001Miami team had such a ridiculous amount of future stars come from it, it truly is amazing. Adversely college is a different game and time in football players lives so an NFL all pro might not even have been as amazing when they were 20.
as an aside, and as mentioned above
wigs in nyc : 1/8/2019 5:01 am : link
the Running Back corps on Miami ‘01 is ridiculous: Frank Gore, Clinton Portis, Willis McGahee, and Najeh Davenport.

The only RB who failed to really catch on in the NFL was Jarret Payton- Walter Payton’s son.
Pretty damn good

Like I suggested, you need to give this time to marinate.

Until then, you exhibit all the signs of being a prisoner of the moment.

As other have pointed out, you really need to study those Miami rosters. It is stunning how many names you recognize because so many played in the NFL.

underrate the hatred of Clemson by a large portion of the population in SC. Any Gamecock fan would vote against him. That rivalry is vastly overlooked around the country but in state is extremely heated. However, Trevor Lawrence is unreal and the tank jobs by NFL teams leading into the 2021 draft will be comical to watch.
Clemson had a great game they are not the greatest team ever

back in the day Joe Namath's Alabama team was unstoppable. Billy Cannon LSU team the great Texas teams, Oklahoma teams and of course the great Miami team

As a casual Gamecocks fan with family ties to the university, yes. It is an extremely heated rivalry, but fairly one sided of late.
1995 Nebraska is the best I've seen by a bit
Go Terps : 1/8/2019 10:12 am : link
Florida had one of the best defenses in the country, and I think Nebraska put 500 yards rushing on them. I've never seen anything like that.

+1, I agree, Beat #2 Florida 62-24 in the Fiesta Bowl, undefeated, outscored teams 53-14 on average (with a Big Ten schedule too).

1984 Nebraska with Irving Fryar, Dean Steinkuhler, Mike Rozier, and Turner Gill. They screwed up their Bowl game, came roaring back against the #2 Miami, and tied the game late after being down by 14. However they went for 2 and missed. They developed the fumble-rooskie.

I think this.

I have no opinion of any team before 1990
Andy in Halifax : 1/8/2019 11:58 am : link
as I was too young. But since that point in time I would easily say the most dominant teams have been 1995 Nebraska and 2001 Miami. Force me to decide... Miami.

Ken Dorsey was a very good college QB.

Phillip Buchanan, Wilfork, William Joseph (NYG) and McDougle, all first round selections, were also on that D.

And Winslow Jr was in the pipeline for the O.

Team was a powerhouse.

I would think the 1950s Sooners (coached by Bud Wilkinson), they of the 47 game consecutive win streak, would be considered the best

Sean Taylor, Vince Wilfork, Antrel Rolle, Frank Gore, Willis McGahee, Kellen Winslow Jr. Were on the bench! That team had potentially 5 hall of famers (Andre Johnson, Ed Reed, Vince Wilfork, Frank Gore, Sean Taylor*) We will see how Clemson does, time will tell, but as of now its the 01 Canes by a mile. This Bama team wasn't as dominant on defense as Miami's team in 01. At the end of the day, I'm just glad to see Bama get their asses kicked :-)
