Should Trevor Lawrence play football in 2020?

dep026 : 1/8/2019 10:06 am
Let’s face it. If he stays healthy and replicates performances like last night in 2019.... should even risk an injury in 2020?

I agree...

He shouldn’t play another college game until he’s able to get drafted. It’s pathetic and wrong that he can’t declare for this year’s draft.

Furthermore, he’s going to sell a lot of merchandise the next few years and get nothing for it.

it's very silly that the league forces him to keep playing in college

It's clear he'd be the #1 pick this year.

So what's the point of playing anymore at Clemson? Is winning multiple titles going to make him any more money?

Right now there is only downside to Lawrence playing another minute of football at Clemson.

He was a true freshman this year. He is two years away from being draft eligible under the current rules.

Surely there are other blue chippers out there.

I don't get this mentality.

Sit, don't play.

Tank the season.

When he gets to the pros, should Lawrence maybe not play preseason because he can get hurt? Or, maybe, even don't start him until Week 8 so he's not injured in September and October..........

Those are the rules. You could just as easily say Saquon shouldn’t play until he is eligible for a big contract.

Furthermore, Lawrence has a lot to learn. He also needs to add weight and get stronger

I think most of us know the rules.

But you understand Lawrence would be the #1 pick this year? So his value as a prospect can't get any higher. NFL draft slots are basically slotted, so the ability to negotiate is minimal.

Playing another down for Clemson is ALL risk for Lawrence for this point forward. What is the upside?
I'm not so sure I'd draft a guy #1

who had 11 college games under his belt and hasn't played competitively in 2 years. How many pros have trouble readjusting after being out 2 years? Plus, so much of QB is mental, he'd be missing a lot of valuable experience in reading defenses and making good decisions.

sounds like the premise is for him to play in 2019 and sit out the 2020 season, so it would be 1 year without playing

Right. 2020 season, 2021 draft. People are asking if he should play the 2020 season.

I'd argue he should be done with college football, but 2 years away from the sport is a little much to ask. Play 2019, then sit out 2020 and enter the 2021 draft.
The density of most of the posters is laughable
Young Elijah : 1/8/2019 11:41 am : link
I am confident dep KNOWS HE HAS YEARS OF ELIGIBILITY LEFT - thats why hes posing the question. If he was eligible, he would have already declared.

The point he is (logically) making is - if Lawrence has cemented himself as the best QB not currently playing in the NFL - and the GOAL of playing in college is to safely audition your way to the top of draft boards - why would Lawrence do a single risky thing in his life between now and April 2021?

Sitting for 2 years is obviously not necessarily a reasonable thing do and he'd get crucified over it by Clemson and college fans - but as some more reasonable posted noted above, there is literally nothing by downside available for him from this point on, and he wont make a PENNY from his efforts.

If he leaves school now, and trains he can 1. Most likely avoid major injury to guarantee himself a top draft position.
2. Sign with an agent and take advances to pay for his living expenses
3. Sign likely lucrative endorsement deals
4. Be the biggest wave in this shift away from the importance of college football and maybe start the conversation of how to keep the kids in the game.

If he were my kid - I would 100% broach the topic seriously.

In a year of practice and games his head prob takes something like 200 hits, x2 thats a serious discussion to be had IMO.
And if he starts off great in the pros,
Bill in UT : 1/8/2019 11:41 am : link
you may have a guy who wants to sit out the last 2 years on his rookie deal so that he doesn't risk signing a $300M contract. Funny, Curtis Reilly seemingly took off 1 play as a "business decision" and got skewed here.

That's also 14 more games he could get hurt in, if the point of this discussion is that he shouldn't risk injury until he's eligible.

In practice, I don't think he should take two years off, either. So I agree with you sentiments. But purely from a risk perspective, there is no upside unless the CBA changes where rookies can go back to negotiating a salary greater than the current slotted-system.

I'm barking more at the system that impugns a talented player like Lawrence from capitalizing on his skills sooner rather than later. He's ready to be in a pro environment right now.

If Lawrence was in this draft somehow, there is zero chance he wouldn't be the top pick. Even if you don't think he's ready (and yes, he does need to put on some bulk), you draft and stash him. He made some throws last night that defy description.
