Monday night’s national championship featured the nation’s two best teams in Alabama and Clemson, but not all of the broadcasters for the game were up to the same standard. ESPN replaced the college coaches typically present in its film room broadcast with its “Monday Night Football” crew. It didn’t exactly pay dividends. Jason Witten, who also has struggled in his first year of calling the NFL, befuddled viewers on the first play of the game, when he failed to grasp one of the college game’s simplest rules. “Why’d he fair catch it?” Witten asked after Clemson downed the ball inside its own 5-yard line. |
Opps!
Troy, Emmit, Irvin, Romo, Witten, Moose Johnson all have or have had numerous gigs.
Emmit and Witten can barely parse two sentences together.
**sorry to change off of the original subject.
Agreed and I thought so from the minute I heard they'd be doing the game.
It's almost like ESPN just wanted these guys to get more on air experience and figured why not do it.
Witten is horrendous... I hate that I'm even giving him an out here. But I may have just assumed that's what he meant if I had heard it live. Not necessarily that he didn't know the returner had the option - rather that he was wondering why he fair caught it rather than try to return it.
I don't watch much college football, so I didn't know the rule. Upon reading it though, I have to say...it seems like a really dumb rule. What is the underlying rationale?

because it proved within 10 seconds of the broadcast that he hadn't watched 5 minutes of college football this season and should not have been on this game at all.

I thought it was safety related.
The only thing worse than the ESPN MNF NFL broadcasting crew is some of the graphics they use.
exactly. I think R. Kelly would be great in that role though.
Good one, I like Witten but he has struggled all year.
Whomever hired Booger needs to be fired. Hearing him blabbing on and on about the Tampa two for the whole game was an atrocity
