Jason Witten’s title game broadcast went wrong immediately

Monday night’s national championship featured the nation’s two best teams in Alabama and Clemson, but not all of the broadcasters for the game were up to the same standard.

ESPN replaced the college coaches typically present in its film room broadcast with its “Monday Night Football” crew. It didn’t exactly pay dividends.

Jason Witten, who also has struggled in his first year of calling the NFL, befuddled viewers on the first play of the game, when he failed to grasp one of the college game’s simplest rules.

“Why’d he fair catch it?” Witten asked after Clemson downed the ball inside its own 5-yard line.

What a fucking trainwreck.

NFL should make them the #1 broadcast crew

..I thought the same thing, then immediately figured it was a college type rule.

Opps!
He is a trainwreck..

and Booger he still makes him look like John Madden...
It is embarrassing

because it proved within 10 seconds of the broadcast that he hadn't watched 5 minutes of college football this season and should not have been on this game at all.
Its crazy how these networks think

playing for the Cowboys is some sort of broadcasting training program.

Troy, Emmit, Irvin, Romo, Witten, Moose Johnson all have or have had numerous gigs.

Emmit and Witten can barely parse two sentences together.
Alternatively Thinking Out Loud crew down on one of the ESPN channels.

It was Greg McElroy and Macus Spears. Then a few guests would filter in and out. I enjoyed that channel for a bit during the game.

**sorry to change off of the original subject.

Agreed and I thought so from the minute I heard they'd be doing the game.

It's almost like ESPN just wanted these guys to get more on air experience and figured why not do it.

I hope Witten isn't asked to

If only he were this incompetent when playing the Giants.

Did he ask that maybe because he caught it near the 5 and wondered why he didn't just return it instead?

Witten is horrendous... I hate that I'm even giving him an out here. But I may have just assumed that's what he meant if I had heard it live. Not necessarily that he didn't know the returner had the option - rather that he was wondering why he fair caught it rather than try to return it.

I don't watch much college football, so I didn't know the rule. Upon reading it though, I have to say...it seems like a really dumb rule. What is the underlying rationale?
During the broadcast...
BamaBlue : 1/8/2019 12:45 pm : link
Witten effortlessly caught 6 passes for 124 yards and two TD's against the Giants defense.

I thought it was safety related.

The only thing worse than the ESPN MNF NFL broadcasting crew is some of the graphics they use.

Good one, I like Witten but he has struggled all year.
Amazingly, ESPN will bring

Whomever hired Booger needs to be fired. Hearing him blabbing on and on about the Tampa two for the whole game was an atrocity
If they want Witten to succeed wildly
David B. : 1/10/2019 9:39 am : link
They should have him ONLY do Giants games.
