This guy was HC and had Davis Webb as his starting QB when Baker Mayfield was healthy and an option. To the extent that Mayfield felt the need to transfer.
McVay's best work isn't what he's done with Goff. It's how he put together his staff and went about establishing a culture with that team. Are Kingsbury and LaFleur going to do that?
Mike Lombardi brought up a great point about LaFleur today - when his offense went up against Don Martindale's defense he got shut out. Yet LaFleur gets a job and Martindale doesn't even get an interview.
Sometimes all you need to see is a year of incompetence and know when to pull the plug.
Sometimes you see a poor record, but potential, good game planning, adjustments, good discipline, a team that is disciplined, motivated, smart but plagued by bad luck. That coach you keep because you feel he can eventually grow in the job and win.
Wilks showed none of that. And he wasn't the right guy to get the best out of Rosen.
Well if a jets fan knows anything, it's incompetence.
Mayfield was 5-0 as starter and then got injured. Davis Webb was the guy who came in and then Baker was not even offered a scholarship by Texas Tech. Mayfield detailed strained relationship with Kingsbury - ( New Window )
You want to criticize his overall record or inability to fix the defense? Fine, but this focus on Mayfield and Webb is asinine. Webb had slightly better numbers the season they played together and he was a top 25 prospect at the position coming out of high school. Heck, he went on to replace Jared Goff at Cal and they averaged 37.1 PPG to the 37.9 they scored with Goff the previous year. Mayfield said he didn't get a scholarship after his freshman year. Guess who did get a scholly that offseason? A top 25 prospect at the position named Pat Mahomes.
Not getting a team to play defense in the Big 12 is hardly a crime. Lincoln Riley is coaching at a far superior program and his defense is an embarrassment. TT lost to the Oklahoma, Texas, and West Virginia this season by a combined 20 points.

He played Davis Webb over Baker
Let that sink in
Wrong. Baker got hurt and transferred because he didn’t think he could get his job back. Mahomes then pushed Webb to Cal, because he’s Mahomes.
And that's the problem. Because one team found McVay does not mean there is a well of McVays out there that can be tapped.

I mean, I get that it's not a blueblood program, but cmon.
I could see hiring him as an OC. As a head coach, though?
He’s white, I mean right, for the job.
Holy shit. WTF is wrong with you?

Agreed. He might be good for Rosen but can he find a Wade Phillips to just handle that side of the ball, while he concentrates on the O and Rosen?

Teams desperately want the next Sean McVay...

Weird. I thought the problem was that a Jets fan posts on a Giants message board.

I've seen some stupid takes around here but Jeff's may take the cake.

This. I would definitely be behind bringing him in as an OC, but as a HC, this will be an epic disaster.
