Which team will jump us to take a qb in this draft?

superspynyg : 1/10/2019 9:51 am
Gettleman is not one to leak or publicly lean which way he is going in the draft so its very realistic that other teams will be convinced that we will take a qb at 6. Bucs have just publicly stated that they will roll with Winston so the only team that could take a qb before us will prob not.

With Murray and Haskins both in the draft and teams like Jax, Denver and Wash all need qbs (Jax and Wash really bad and in a win now state). It is likely that a team will have to jump us to get the qb of choice. It makes no sense to jump higher than needed. So trading with the Bucs is the way to go. So who will it be?

I have a feeling it will be Jax. A team that has the most pieces to win now. A great def.
Jax, maybe Denver
SHO'NUFF : 1/10/2019 9:53 am : link
but luckily Haskins or Murray would be worth a king's ransom to jump ahead.
wouldn't
SHO'NUFF : 1/10/2019 9:54 am : link
not would
Won't know until Foles signs
jeff57 : 1/10/2019 9:54 am : link
But Jacksonville and Denver are most likely. Possibly Washington.
Some positive reports on Alex Smith's health before the draft
Chris684 : 1/10/2019 9:57 am : link
would be great, not only for him but would help us as well.

Foles presumably to Jacksonville or Denver also takes one of them out of the market.

Between Haskins, Jones, Grier and possibly Rosen available, NYG has a lot of studying to do.
Jax will draft a QB.
Diver_Down : 1/10/2019 10:02 am : link
They are tight on the cap, and still have to pay Jalen. They will be eating the dead cap from Blake's contract. They don't have the room to sign a FA QB. Same goes for Washington. Alex Smith's contract has guaranteed money for injury. A lot of it. While everyone hopes that Smith is able to recover, there are no guarantees that he returs to play. A very difficult injury to return from at his age.
I would watch Washington very closely

Mara is numero uno on Snyders hit list and being the vengeful little prick Snyder is, it would not surprise me one bit to see them make a move just to screw the Giants.
Hopefully a lot so

Depends on where the FA QB's end up
rasbutant : 1/10/2019 10:54 am : link
But...

Jacksonville
Broncos
Bengals
Washington
Saints

Are the most likely looking for a QB this draft. Saints don't have a 1st round pick though.

Maybe.....
Oakland
Tampa Bay
Dolphins
Patriots

Last year he raved about Barkley and to some extent Darnold leading up to the draft. This year he has only said so far that there is a lot of work to be done on the D-side of the ball. He hasn't really mentioned a QB since Herbert indicated that he was staying in school one more year.

Assuming one of the QBs us rated high enough like a Goff for example. He’s pretty good but clearly not in the Mahones level. I think it’ll be Haskins. You stick a Goff type QB on the Jaguars and clean up the BS stuff there and they’re good. My theory is that Coughlin has to jump ahead of everyone to get him and he makes the kind of trade Accorsi made to get
Eli. He gets the first pick to get ahead of everyone especially Gettleman. The Giants have too many weaknesses to make that trade

IMO, if TC trade two #1s to to leapfrog the Giants for Haskins, then he should probably lose his job. There isn't a QB in this draft worth that much. I would think TC would first consider the same trade we Giants fans have been day-dreaming about today, and that would be a trade to get Rosen.
Well it really depends
mdthedream : 1/10/2019 12:07 pm : link
if the trade is done during the draft than I think the Raiders or Tampa trade back. Jags and Det could be the teams to jump the Giants. Denver is going to be hard to jump to 5 or 4 with the 10th pick. Washington at 14 is a long way to trade back if they can trade with a team like the Jags or Det. If the trade happens before the draft than say with the Jets than everything changes but the team doing so would need to make sure they don't lose there player to another team trading ahead of that trade. So unless its to move to number one it will most likely happen during the draft.
Knock on Haskins
Samiam : 1/10/2019 12:35 pm : link
The main criticism that I see of Haskins is that he has all day to throw and that he’s throwing to very good receivers. While that is true, that doesn’t mean that Haskins is not a good prospect. I have no idea how smart he is or how much of a leader he is, but I’m guessing we’ll find out soon enough. He looks like he has a very good arm. I wouldn’t rule him out or in until the combines and teams get a chance to talk to him.
I'm still not buying that Gruden is sold on Carr as his QB

it's been discussed that DG doesn't trade draft picks....
Drewcon40 : 1/10/2019 12:45 pm : link
Would it be possible that if a team loves one of these QBS and the Giants look to 2020 as a better option, possibly making a trade for a 1 round pick in 2020 as part of a deal?

That's not true. He has traded up before. He has never traded down to my understanding.

Good point. The OP really was trying to say: "Which team will jump us to take a qb we wanted in this draft." The answer may be "Nobody, because we don't necessarily want a QB in the first round."

The Giants could easily look at this draft and figure "We don't think any of these QB prospects are worth our pick, never mind trading up for them. Let's see if we can sign a free agent QB, even if it means we'll have to trade a ton of picks to get a young QB in next year's draft." I also wouldn't be surprised to see the Giants trade down to get another pick, and then take a QB later in the first.
It seems funny to me that a criticism of Haskins is:
joeinpa : 1/10/2019 2:02 pm : link
He has too much time to throw, while at the same time Eli s poor performances over the past three seasons have often been blamed on poor offensive line play, that doesn’t give him ENOUGH time to throw.

I guess the narrative supporting another season or two with Eli can be spun from both positions.

For the record I m fine if Eli is the guy next season, would just prefer that sooner rather than later Giants get their next young guy.

He's also gotten worse at reading the field, his mechanics have gotten worse, and his footwork is not great. He often flakes at the first sign of pressure. As always, the criticism can be placed on multiple positions. This is a team sport. Too often we've seen the line adequately protect him only for him not to step up and vice versa. It goes both ways.

I like Haskins, but the "too much time" concern is based around not knowing how he'll react when he is pressured more consistently. People are not upset that he's had time to make throws, it just makes it harder to project how he'll do when the pressure does arrive on a more consistent basis. It will happen in the NFL at some point. I think he'll be ok, but it is an uncertainty as of now.

Why in a defensive rich draft do you think it's a good idea or good value to take a defensive player #6 and having 10 other picks?

I don't assume anything. As with last year, there are multiple good options, and as we saw DG will grab the guy he is love with. Although the team needs the QB of the future, none of us knows how DG views any of the QBs entering this years draft (including Haskins); although he seemed to like Herbert.

Compared to last year, IMO none of the QBs in the 2019 class would be among the first four QBs picked. And for the Haskins lovers, I doubt he would be among the first four QBs taken next year. Maybe if he stayed in college another year that would change, but who knows.

As one football writer published earlier, Haskins maybe the best of the 2019 QB class, but many teams are luke-warm to him. A lot can happen between now and draft day, but this is a very uninspiring QB class.

Listen to what DG says, because he doesn't hide it well. Last year he raved about Barkley, he said you never force a QB pick, and this year he has already stated that the D needs to be fixed. I've heard him say nothing about Haskins.

He's also said you don't ever want to go shopping hungry, which to me implies that he would prefer to find his needs (defensive impact players) before the draft. I think he prefers to be in a position to take the BPA.

FWIW, I also think this applies to the QB position. I doubt very much that he waits until draft day to find a replacement for Eli, if that's what he decides he wants to do.

With the salary cap situation, there are only so many holes that the team can realistically fill before the draft; so they will be hungry come draft day. Not to mention, that if they decide to resign Collins, that will eat up a big chunk of the available cap.

The Giants won't find a good replacement for Eli before the draft unless the Rosen speculation comes to fruition. They could settle for a stopgap but Foles, Flacco, Bridgewater, etc. are not good long term answers.

other than start selling #26 Jerseys with Barkley printed on them on Giants.com prior to the draft.

And something tells me that the football world will know what his intent will be again well before the 2019 draft kicks off.

You probably just have to call him to find out. Just don’t do it on draft day because he doesn’t seem to want to pick up the phone at that point.
As far as I can tell, there are only 2 ways to acquire draft picks.
Ivan15 : 1/10/2019 10:56 pm : link
Trade a player for picks or trade down in the draft.

Giants have no one of value to trade without a big cap hit, so trading down could be DG’s approach.

If they don’t pick a QB in round 1, trading down to near the top of round 2 would be wise.

to trade up to 2 if Mayfield was still there. The point being there is always a dark horse out there with the potential to surprise all the talking heads as the Chiefs did when they traded up for Mahomes.
