If the Giants release Eli tomorrow

GoBlue6599 : 1/10/2019 1:59 pm
Is there a team in the NFL that would commit to him as the QB next season as well as a big cap #. Then why should the Giants?
The only leverage Eli really has is that Mara is to much of a coward to stand up to the fans who want Eli as the QB no matter how many games the team continues to lose.
Wouldn’t it make more sense to approach Eli about a paycut if not then outright release and use that money on a young player who actually has a future with this team?

I am interested in yours and other posters thoughts as to what is the amount Eli should be paid for 2019?

I struggle thinking about cutting people's pay but expecting a level of performance that works for me, unless he is going from starting role to bench. Which is why i tend to think that Eli should just be outright released (and let him decide if he wants to retire or move on instead).

The point is fair
WideRight : 1/10/2019 2:13 pm : link

Giants don't hesitate to go after all the underperforming non-white players for salary "restructuring". Why does Eli get a pass?

By my estimate, restructing him to fair value would create enough cash to get another exensive OL man to protect him.

If Eli is cut?
Eli has "NO" cap #!!!!!!
Doomster : 1/10/2019 2:29 pm : link
If released, he gets what ever he negotiates with another team....so his cap could be anywhere from one buck to 17M....most likely, less than 17M........

For the right club with an OL, a bargain....
There's an inherent tension with Eli and the Giants.
81_Great_Dane : 1/10/2019 2:36 pm : link
On the one hand, he's expensive; he's not fantastic; and he's at the end of his career. Plus Gettleman seems to be a rip-off-the-band-aid kind of guy. If DG thinks that Eli is a problem, or blocking the solution, Eli is probably going to be gone.

On the other hand, he's Eli Manning; in some ways he raised his game last year; he did that without a decent line in front of him for most of the season; and Shurmur likes veteran QBs. Plus someone has to play QB in 2019, and it better not be Kyle Lauletta or Alex Tanney.

So it's either make a clean break and move on, probably with a free agent QB for 2019, or stick with Eli for another year. Either way they look for a young guy to develop. Eli becomes the new Kurt Warner. If we're lucky, maybe a free agent becomes the new Kerry Collins, but Kerry Collins never won a Super Bowl. And KC was a pretty good QB.

I think it's 60-40 toward "clean break"/ Eli goes -- especially if you figure in the possibility that Eli takes the decision out of their hands and retires.

Don't base your question, any opinion, or reasoning on facts. Just pull stuff out of thin air and see how people react. According to the OP, they'll just force Eli to retire (I'd like to know how you force someone in Eli's position to retire) or cut him and eat the dead money/cap hit. Then they'll sign Ryan Fitzpatrick, a guy who threw 12 interceptions in 8 games in which he did not play the entirety of each game, and who will play for less than 10 million or some made up number (yeah right). Just so much STUPID.
What a stupid thread.
Section331 : 1/10/2019 2:42 pm : link
Any team picking up Eli is assuming a cap hit. The Giants have that cap hit whether they keep, trade or cut Eli.

What was your point again?

Your point is far more fair than the OP's. There is nothing wrong with asking Eli to restructure, but what do you do if he says no? Cut him and eat the cap hit? Then on top of that, you have to pay his replacement.

Personally, I would look at restructuring, but not at the expense of extending his contract. Then the Giants are free of his contract after next season, and can either resign him if he plays well enough or move on.
Dumb and dumber
Bruner4329 : 1/10/2019 2:51 pm : link
Like many above has said you don't release him without a backup plan. Not going into offseason with no QB options waiting for FA or Draft to happen. Unless you secure an alternative nothing will happen. IMO Eli is here anyway in 2019.

Just read this board.

It seems like everyone wants Vernon cut, and Gettleman is justified in trading our best defender and a developing top 10 pick for peanuts.

At the same time a large number of posters wanted to bring back mediocre Justin Pugh.

The Giants just had an African American GM for how long?

The Giants just committed how much money to their African American WR? RB? Now we're arguing they make financial decisions based on race?

1. None of us know if he has been asked to restructure yet but assuming he wouldn't be asked because he is white, not because he has won us two championships and is one of our best players ever, is in my opinion, really fucking moronic.

Fair to criticize the Giants for resigning Josh Brown? Yeah, that was fucked.

Fair to criticize the Giants over the ridiculous fucking cost of a hot pretzel and water at Metlife? Yeah.

Fair to criticize the Giants for being crappy the last 8 years? Yes.

Fair to assume them of racism? Nah. Big stretch.

BobbyJohnson4thand17 : 1/10/2019 3:40 pm : link
Ron Mexico - I like you as a poster. I said less than 10M, but my bigger point was the lack of anything to support the premise of forcing Eli to retire and signing Fitzpatrick as a bridge. Since when are the NY Giants going to sign a Ryan Fitzpatrick type as a bridge? Does he have Kurt Warner's pedigree?

Second, on the racism front, people forgot how quickly they got rid of Geno Smith. Wait, they also fired McAdoo. That doesn't support the narrative. Wait, they also haven't cut Vernon. Damn.

I get the narrative now is that everything is connected to Eli, but did they not make the playoffs two seasons ago? Did he not throw 30 and 35 tds in back-to-back seasons? The point is it's not as "black-and-white" as some are subtly trying to make it.

The point is no team HAS to pay him what the Giants are paying him in the last year of his contract. But just to indulge your abstract, in-a-vacuum proclamations, I can see Washington, Jacksonville, Denver, and Miami as potential landing spots. That's the beauty about the free market, it where desperation and rationality battle to determine the outcome.

I see I have to spell it out a little more for you, pedigree as in you could sell Kurt Warner to Giants fans as a way to try and be competitive while bring along your #1 pick at QB. Didn't they start out 6-2 that year? You can't do that with Ryan Fitzpatrick. Instead, you tell the fans we're tanking, and we took a QB this year when the QB class is thought to be stronger next year. Easy thing to say when it's not your money/bottomline.

Unreal, not worth a minute other then to expose this crap. I think if the Giants made up their minds they would first look to trade him, but how do you release a 2 time Super Bowl MVP and leave yourself with nothing. He did not play bad this past season. I want his replacement here, but just because you want to have that player doesn't mean you suddenly get fucking stupid and release him, like he is garbage, it's hard to even listen to this crap. Then another idiot reads it and wants his fucking slant and genius here since he just read this brilliant conclusion and on and on it goes.
