NFT: Islanders vs. Rangers @ MSG tonight 7pm

The 12th Man : 1/10/2019 2:16 pm
Islanders 23-14-4
Rangers. 17-18-7

Game is held at Islanders 3rd Home.

Game is the 1st if a back to back which will conclude this year’s meetings between the teams.

SEASON SERIES: SERIES TIED 1-1-0

The home team has won each of the first two meetings between the Islanders and Rangers this season. The Islanders won the first meeting 7-5 at Barclays Center on Nov. 15, while the Rangers won the rematch 5-0 on Nov. 21.

Having a real coach and laying D does matter in this league.
I want to thank the Caps again for Barry Trotz. Islanders had a bad effort on Tuesday night and will look to rebound. Rangers been in the middle of a bad stretch they are 3-5-2 in their last 10 games. The Islanders are 8-2 in the same stretch. Rangers have only 5 teams ahead of them in giving up goals with 145. Islanders in top 5 in goals against almost a whole goal per game lower than the Rangers. Rangers will be playing for pride Islanders to get into a playoff position. Season halfway done and our boys from the Island are fun to watch, well coached and are playing like a playoff team. Let’s get it on! Go Isles!

ISLANDERS NOTES:

- The Islanders six-game winning streak was snapped on Tuesday night against Carolina. The Isles are looking to get back on track on Thursday.

- Thursday's game kicks off a home-and-home set against the Rangers, with the two teams meeting again on Saturday afternoon at Barclays Center. These are the final two meetings of the season between the crosstown rivals.

- The Islanders (50 points) are one point back of the Montreal Canadiens (51 points) for the second wild card berth, and one point back of the Columbus Blue Jackets (51 points) for third in the Metropolitan Division.

- Robin Lehner is currently on a career-high, seven-game winning streak. Lehner has allowed only 13 goals in his last 10 games (7-1-2, 1.34 GAA, .952 save percentage). UPDATE: Lehner will start on Thursday night.

- The Islanders power play is 1-for-9 over the team's past four games.

- Brock Nelson has six points (3G, 3A) in his last five games, including a three-point night on Tuesday vs Carolina.

- Mathew Barzal has 11 points (3G, 8A) in six career games vs the Rangers. Anthony Beauvillier has 12 points (6G, 6A) in eight games vs the Rangers.

RANGERS NOTES:

- The Rangers have lost four straight games by a combined score of 22-5. Overall the Rangers are 3-5-2 in their last 10 games.

- Mika Zibanejad leads the Rangers with 35 points (12G, 23A) in 42 games this season. Zibanejad and Kevin Hayes are tied for the team lead in assists (23).

- Henrik Lundqvist was pulled in each of his last two starts after allowing six and five goals, respectively. Lundqvist, the Rangers all-star representative, is 12-11-7 this season with a 3.04 GAA and a .909 SV%.

- The Rangers (41 points) are 10 points back of a playoff spot, while also trailing behind the Florida Panthers (41 points), Carolina Hurricanes (45 points) and the Islanders (50 points).

- The Rangers are 1-1-5 on home ice since the start of December.

Let's hope not, Islanders need every point, especially against the bad teams. This team is poised to make a playoff run if they can get in with the style of game they play. Believe they are buyers at the deadline and that the best is yet to come.

There is no guarantee of this. There is just a guarantee that if you are in the lottery position to draft him that all it means is that you sucked this year.

already have their Jack Hughes in Barzal. We will not have to wait for the draft or next season to watch him play with an Islanders sweater on. You can watch him too tonight.

Plus we did just fine in last years draft with Wahlstrom, Dobson and Wilde with our 1st 3 picks.

Hey Greg who won the Calder last year, if you forgot he will be wearing an Islanders jersey tonight. I don’t have to hope and pray he is going to put on an Islanders Jersey he already does!

The kid is now thinking of shooting which he more always more focused on passing. Goals have gone up and they are playing well, it is not a coincidence.

He is a very good player and would be a good consolation prize, problem is it looks like the Flyers are tanking even better than the Rangers. No guarantee you will pick 1st or 2nd.
The job Trotz has done on the Island
Metnut : 1/10/2019 3:15 pm : link
has been remarkable. If the only way JT was going to stay was keeping Snow/Weight and those goons, then bye bye pajama boy.

The team just keep improving each week under Trotz with the young d corps particularly taking major steps forward.
Kravtsov played injured during the WJC, but he seems to
Anakim : 1/10/2019 3:16 pm : link
be a good pick. Time will tell who is better between him and Wahlstrom. K'Andre has been awesome for Wisconsin. Lundkvist's been okay.

And their inexplicable second rounder, Olof Lindbom, has been injured for most of the year. That pick was and still is just absolutely baffling.

There havn't really been Rangers game threads either this year. A game with both NY teams would likely have more posts.

The majority of BBI Islander fans left the board after a dispute with the moderation. I remember their being game threads for most games despite the team missing the playoffs that last year most of the posters were on BBI.

Are you sure? In the 2015-2016 season (3 seasons ago), the Islanders beat the Panthers in the first round while the Rangers were knocked out.

The Rangers aren't doing well, as we all expected. This has been a throwaway year. We're not making the playoffs and these games are meaningless. No shit there haven't been regular game threads. Why would there be?

I did say 2 or 3 ... turns out it was two when the Rangers waxed Montreal (yet again) and Islanders didnt make it. Soon thereafter, well after one last joke of another non-playoff season, lost Tavares for nothing in free agency.

I remember that Panthers series - the one where refs refused to call penalties on the Islanders over 6 periods or so in game 5, and then inexplicably waived a tripping penalty on a Panthers empty net breakaway that would have sealed game 6.

No worries though, Tampa made very short work of you in 5 games the following round anyway.

The Islanders are fighting for a playoff spot despite the presence of Leo Komarov, and the Rangers are fighting for Jack Hughes or El Pollo Loco from Finland.

So let's all just agree that everybody, including God, hates the Rangers.

Bwahahahaha. A) Barry Trotz is not a HOFer; B) you clearly missed the part where we've committed to rebuilding. If we wanted to hire a big name, we would have. You don't think the Rangers would hire Joel Quenneville if they wanted?
Isles didn't play great tonight obviously
Metnut : 1/10/2019 10:13 pm : link
Rangers played harder and clearly wanted to beat their rivals. I'm sure most NYR fans didn't mind missing out on the loser point tonight.

I'll still take the 2 points for NYI. Tip of the cap to the Isles fans at MSG who made some noise. Gotta win again vs these guys on Saturday with the Golden State Lightning coming to town on Sunday.

Isles now 10-2 in last 12 and 7-1 in last 8. Isles within 2 points and have games in hand on CLB and PIT, so home ice for the first round still should be the goal.

Third line was certainly a liability tonight. Trotz is trying to establish a system so I get it, but I'd much rather see HoSang and Dal Colle on that line.

4th most wins I say your wrong. As for complete rebuild that is great you think you were going to talk a quality coach to coach an over the hill goalie and a team that has guys who took home town discounts who are not even worth the home town discount. The Islanders future is bright and the future is now. It took a lot longer than it should have but hell it is now worth the wait.

There's no HHOF category for coaches. There is one for BUILDERS, but what exactly did Trotz build? The Capitals won the Cup in the end, but Trotz never really built a long-lasting team. He's not in the same category as Babcock or Quenneville.

Okay? congratulations. The Islanders are doing well. Good for you. Meanwhile, we're rebuilding. You guys should know a little something about rebuilding...

Cup winner and is going to be really high on the all-time win list when it's all said and done.

Hard to really evaluate NYR coach given what he has to work with this season. Maybe it'll work out, but the full rebuilding path can be a long one with no guarantees that things work out. The fact that NYR is a prime destination for free agents gives them an advantage that a lot of rebuilding teams don't have.

I'm pretty happy with where the Isles are at. Good chance at playoffs this year, top 5 farm system per the Athletic's prospect guru Corey Pronman, budding young super star in Matt Barzal, and a ton of cap room since Toronto did the honor of paying $11.5 AAV for Tavares' decline years.

This is categorically wrong. Or deliberately obtuse. The man is 4th all time in wins (785) and is a Stanley Cup champion. Also a builder in NSH as he educated a public and grew a hockey community in a non traditional market and established the basis for a successful, if not upper echelon NHL franchise. That also carries a lot of weight in the NHL grand scheme of things.

But you knew that.

And to further expound on that, Ken Hitchcock has more wins, no? He also a Cup like Trotz does and has a better winning percentage in the regular season and the playoffs. Would you induct Hitch into the Builders wing? Sounds like Hitch would get in before Trotz...unless Trotz wins another Cup.

Thanks for the link, but unnecessary. I think that the league values NSH as a franchise and holds it up there as an example of growing the game at its best. And Trotz was there from the get-go and literally held classes for the people of Nashville to first learn the game and then to grow to be among the most vocal crowds in the game and a feared destination. That’s just my opinion, but if a guy like me not even affiliated with a team can see that, I imagine those in the game certainly do. Especially guys named Bettman. But his coaching alone will have him there.

And B, I’m glad you brought it up. I wanted to keep it on the DL about my foul sewer actually being possibly infected. Just giving you a head’s up. You may wanna see your guy.

being 9th from the bottom doesn't sound like a very successful mission, but they're only 4 points up from dead last. If they throw some body weight into the skid here, it could start looking better quickly.

They could do themselves a real favor by moving Hayes and Zucc a bit earlier than the deadline. Convince a contender that they can save themselves a bidding war by move early, and send them packing.

Haven't spent any time on the forum for the rangers this season because a lot of people don't like to hear others vocally hoping for the team to lose, and I get it. I keep it to myself mostly. Hopefully some more interesting conversations to be had once the TDL approaches and there are different things to discuss.

Until then, one month until pitchers and catchers....

What exactly am I missing? Started a thread the same pubescent Ranger fans come on with their usual comments. You knew it would happen. So here we are, the Islanders are an improving young team with a star in the making. The Rangers a team that is rebuilding but yet with many overpaid veterans that need to be moved in order for the real improvement to happen. Been there done that, it sucks to go through especially with a coach that is learning as he goes too. There are better days ahead for both franchises, the Islanders though looks like wil happen sooner rather than later.

You know I was in Wal-Mart the other day having to pick up a few things and there was a guy in the parking lot bringing in the shopping carts. I stood there thinking about what this poor guy goes through every day. I thought thank God there are positions for people who need it. Then I thought what kind of mentality does it take to want to do that each day. Then I came on here and read some of your posts and now I know exactly the mentality it takes. Make sure you clean out the carts before you bring them in today.

Devon Toews should've made the team out of camp. He's already playing like a top 4 dman straight out of the AHL. It'll be interesting to see who ends up sitting when Hickey comes back. IMO, Hickey or Pelech need to be in the press box.

With Toews, Boychuk's renaissance year, the emergence of Pulock and Mayfield under Trotz and having Dobson and Wilde on the farm, the Islanders looks really set to be good on D for a long time.

It's one of the more dramatic turnarounds for a unit that i've ever seen in sports. Would be like the Giants offensive line turning into an asset next year with young guys signed long term and cheap everywhere.

Management knew he was ready. Just needed some seasoning after a long injury layoff. That and Snow screwed the pooch with the Pelch one way contract haha

It's glaring how important Filpula is to the team. They have played like crap since his injury. I never would have guessed it.

Hopefully they keep the toughness to one line at home. With last change, no need to roll out Johnston on L3.

Typical game (as of late) for both franchises. As a Rangers fan - I still felt last night didn't have the intensity as it did just a few short years ago. I commented earlier in the year that I thought the Islanders would balance out nicely after Tavares and his pajamas left (both financially and in terms of roster balance).

12th man is not totally wrong. I am not sure who "wins a cup first", the Islanders sure look like they are closer to having a contender but teams can come up short and then have to rebuild (NYR 2014 and 2015),

Hopefully (from a Ranger fan perspective), we can break the Barclay's curse. I certainly am not rooting for loses but if we land a Hughes or Kakko - it would certainly help getting this team on the right track.

While I take nothing away from the Islanders (or the fans on this board) for the win. I was impressed by the Rangers who without Hayes (no excuse but one of our better players) and since Jan 3 (Pittsburgh game) and a west coast trip that was awful, I thought the Rangers hung in there pretty well. No points for trying hard but I was happy that we brought some emotion. I am not sure if it was due to the opponent or maybe just trying to get past the West trip but we hung in there and played a strong third.

We lost to a better team.

The core they are building on is around Barzal, Beau, Pulock, Ho Sang, Dal Colle, Toews.. with the vets of Lee, Bailey, Leddy and Nelson

They are fine with age, and have an impressive crop coming up after that.

When you're bad for that long, you tend to have talented youth in the wings.

Good comparison.

The only thing I would disagree with on 12th man is the "3rd home", that's trying a bit too hard. I "think" he has having some good natured fun. I am (unfortunately) a Mets fan and I wouldn't call the Bronx the Mets 2nd home and certainly know what Shea and Citi look(ed) like during Subway Series.

All jokes aside, that 3rd period was an onslaught. We actually played a very solid game until then, but you could tell the Rangers were desperate for a W in that 3rd. Hoping tomorrow afternoon is the Rangers' last ever game at Barclay's Center and they leave the place winless :)

Rick Nash was a damned good player who couldn't make people happy because he was a different kind of player than he was expected to be.

Yep, Nash was always a solid player, playing all aspects of the game. Too bad most people only look at the goal totals.

A friend of mine has a connection with a dude who has a box at the Garden and I was lucky enough to catch the game there last night. Great experience, but you Rangers fans shouldn't be mocking our obstructed views. I felt like I was at Barclay's!

All jokes aside, that 3rd period was an onslaught. We actually played a very solid game until then, but you could tell the Rangers were desperate for a W in that 3rd. Hoping tomorrow afternoon is the Rangers' last ever game at Barclay's Center and they leave the place winless :)

Mike did anyone ask you for an autograph (oops sorry I am old man, a selfie) thinking you were DiPietro?
Haha, no but there actually was an athlete in the box with us

I haven't been to that many arenas, but the Coliseum has the best sight lines of those I've been to.

I think MSG was better than it currently is prior to the renovation.

Well my comment was mostly in jest. The site lines I think are very good at the Garden. In this particular suite though, unless you’re sitting in the first two rows, you can’t see anything below the dots on that side. Even if you’re right behind them. And most people in these things stand around and eat, and if you want to do that you can’t realt catch the game at the same time.

But yeah I was totally kidding comparing it to Barclay’s ha

All the best to him. His NYR stint may have been unspectacular relative to expectations, but a consummate pro and seemingly a really quality human being.

I liked how he looked into the camera during every interview. Every. Single. Time.

Career CBJ goals from Dubinsky/Anisimov/Erixon:
111

Career NYR goals from Nash:
145

Still remember the "We Don't Want You" chants for Nash

That sucks that he had to leave a game he loves due to a head injury. May not have been the player he was paid to be but, seeing anyone have due to injury sucks. Good Luck to him in the future. I hope he is able to get over his concussion issues so he can lead a normal life.
Nash
bigbluehoya : 1/11/2019 10:56 am : link
was the first sports "jersey" that my now-4-year-old son ever had. He used to run around house yelling "I'M RICK NASH"

I'll always remember him screaming at me when I told him that Nasher wasn't on the Rangers anymore on the day he was traded. He wasn't quite crying, but he was pretty fucking pissed off, and he thought I had done it.

Nash
pjcas18 : 1/11/2019 11:15 am : link
is one of the players I'd tell kids to watch to learn fundamentals.

Watch him with the puck, watch without the puck. Fundamentally there is nothing he could not do and do well.

He's a rare breed in the NHL. He's solid or better 5v5, can play on the PK, PP, and can score "goal scorer's goals" and greasy goals. Solid hockey IQ.

Good size, great locker room guy, and he does everything well. Can play physical (wish he would have been more physical, but Nash was a physical player)

The problem Nash faced his whole career is he won the Richard at 19, setting up career expectations he just wasn't really set up to meet. 19 PP goals as a 19 year old, and that was almost 50% of his goals that year he won the Richard.

Concussions suck.

"Young".....

Next five Islanders leading scorers after Barzal:
28 year old Anders Lee
29 year old Josh Bailey
27 year old Brock Nelson
28 year old Jordan Eberle
34 year old Valtteri Filppula

They aren't actually all that young.

That's not going to bring a Cup to Brooklyn (or wherever they plan to play), not even close. It's a start but moving forward the Islanders are going to need to be a lot better at recruiting, and a lot smarter with their Cap dollars. Can't fuck up with signings like Ladd anymore.

It's not terribly hard after so many years of losing to build a decent nucleus... retaining and maximizing that "window" is the hard part in the modern day cap era NHL. As the Rangers saw - a few bad moves like letting Stralman walk, career ending concussions to tremendous young D-men like Sauer... are often the difference between a Cup and nothing.

And even if you get everything right... Ovechkin, Crosby and Malkin are still in this division, and Toronto and Tampa are tremendous in the Atlantic. It's a mountain to climb.

Trotz should help on all these fronts though. I dont hate the Islanders - just 12th Man and maybe Fekker.

if I think the Islanders are good team (as a 44 year old Ranger fan)?

I grew up on Long Island and went through the "1940" chants and chicken dances, etc.

I can't switch teams but I don't have the Mick Vukota/Baumgartner hate. I don't think you can just say "we'll win the cup". Tampa Bay can very well see this window close without a cup.

Barzal is obviously a good player but Ryan Pulock is a player I really like. He has a bomb for a shot.

Anyway, I was just being complimentary because I just want 12th man to like me. : ) #fingerscrossed.

and when Shestyorkin finally takes over for Lundqvist and posts a 0.00 GAA, we will have the last laugh.

We're not hyped. We're just cautiously avoiding pessimism... for now.

And I gotta say, it's really fully to see all this time later, B in ALB is still absolutely delusional about what the Rangers are and drunkenly attacking people on BBI. It's one thing to say they've made the right organizational decisions over the last 12 months. They certainly have. It's another to say "the future is bright!" without any reasonable reservations.

The future is neither bright nor dark. It's incomplete and unquantifiable for you guys. Settle the fuck down.
