on both sides. It's not a small amount but it's only one year. Any option though? If Bird does well he'll be in a position to walk. (Not that I'm against him having a good year.)

No, this is only the first year of arbitration for Bird. The Yanks have two more years of arbitration control before he can reach FA.
Bird has had too many opportunities and has not taken advantage
You are right that this may be his last shot. I like Voit a lot and he did more in his limited time.
I do have to admit that I do like the idea of Harper as an OF/1B option. I feel like 1B has plagued us for awhile. I was excited to get Teixeia but felt he changed his swing and approach at the plate when he came here and it sucked. It would be nice to get some production out of the position from a long term solution.
Hsre is a guy who can't make it through even 1/4 of a season and any stretch of extended health he's had has resulted i. Terrible output at the plate. And, he will make over $1M. I don't care what that looks like relative to a decent player his age, the avoidance of arbitration, the small risk. To me, a player like this should make league minimum, which is already too high.
but Bird showing some more of what he showed going into last season and less of what he showed during last season would be huge for this team. His glove is much steadier than Voit's (not great, but reliable enough) and he's a left bat in a lineup with none.
tough, carrying 2 first base only players. Well they can, but reduces flexibility. They need a utility IF on the bench. RAB has a very good article on this.
Thankfully Torres can play SS to cover Tulo's days off. Question is then who plays 2nd when Torres is at SS.
Three man bench - Romine, ??IF(Walker/Wade or similar), Bird
This all goes away if Hal lets Cash sign Manny. If he doesn't, the infield will be terrible. I am not as low on Andujar as most, but he is below average. And yes Voit/Bird is weak at first defensively. RAB - ( New Window )
I know there are some knowledgeable folks who believe he will never make it. It's possible that MLB pitchers have figured out his achilles heel(s), but I think that the Yanks would have as well by now.
lets face it. He had a solid debut in 2015 for 146 ab's. Missed all of 2016. missed a good chunk of 2017 and was awful till Sept of that year and had a decent run for a few weeks in the playoffs with one huge HR of Miller. Absolutely awful last year with a -.06 WAR and .672 OPS. All of this with mediocre D at best at 1b. For a team fashioning itself as a title contender and endless resources its mind boggling that they've kept him around and not searched for legitimate upgrades at 1b. I mean a legitimate upgrade = a league average player.
......itself as a title contender and endless resources its mind boggling that they've kept him around and not searched for legitimate upgrades at 1b. I mean a legitimate upgrade = a league average player.
I think Cash still feels strongly that Bird is who Cash thinks he is. I think Cash stating Voit is the starter going into ST is a fire lit under Bird's butt. I also do not think they will wait much past ST to decide if Bird is back where he should be.
I did see Bird still limping on occasion late last year. Maybe the ankle never was fully healed which is why his bat speed and contact were so bad.
I also think Voit is pretty much the batter we saw at season's end. While he likely isn't at .315 hitter, with his swing style and willingness to go oppo field I think a solid .280 is possible with 20+ HRs.
Three man bench - Romine, ??IF(Walker/Wade or similar), Bird
That puts Frazier in Triple A to start the season even if he hits .400 in ST. And makes Gardner the everyday LF. Axisa is fine with that because he is a major Gardner fan. Not everybody is, particularly after Gardner's second half of last season.
In his mailbag post, Axisa says Frazier can maybe come up around midseason. Whenever he does, there's no room for two first basemen who only play first base.
Now go get Marwin Gonzalez and Moose Moustakas to add some more power from the left side for reasonable cash and term.
I have a feeling that Adam Warren will be back on a 1 yr deal for depth in the bullpen and spot starts. Then we can add him to a trade at the deadline again as an expiring contract for minor league pieces.

Today, the Yankees signed LHP Zach Britton to a 3-year deal through 2021 w/ a team option for 2022, which the club must exercise or decline following the 2020 season. If the Yankees decline the 2022 team option, Britton may elect to become a free agent for the 2021 season.

To make room on the 40-man roster, the Yankees DFA'd INF Hanser Alberto
I still think they give him every shot to be the long term answer at 1B. Cashman called him the best pure hitter of the young guys just a few years back. With what they have produced internally, they have my confidence. At worst, his defense when healthy is league average. Hes a much needed left handed bat, with power and a patient eye.
Three man bench - Romine, ??IF(Walker/Wade or similar), Bird

Frazier should be starting in LF if he's healthy. There's nothing left fo him to do in the minors. It's time to give him MLB AB's.
but I agree 100%. he should be playing a minumum of 6 out of every 10 games in left. And I only have it that low because I want Stanton playing more LF than he did last year.
Here would be my approximate splits for the OF out of every 10 games

you can color me shocked on LeMaiheu, and not in a good way.
That tells me pretty much no Manny, and that stinks.
Not sure I like it, but after thinking about it, I can see some possibilities on why they did it.
DJ was injured most of May and most of July in 2018, which probably led to the lower numbers when compared to his 2015-2017 numbers, which were outstanding for a 2B. High OBP, solid defense.
DJ was also the Rockies leadoff man 290 times last season after being their #2 hole hitter for the prior 3 seasons. What is he is the new leadoff guy for the Yanks?
Also means that Torres gets pushed off of 2B- probably to 3B. The big question now becomes, what happens to Andujar.
One possibility- if DJ is the leadoff hitter, it might be a good idea to move Stanton to LF and Andujar to DH. If Gardner isn't leading off, his bat doesn't slot well in the lineup. They lose his good defense, but the #9 spot might be Tulo's now. Also improves their bench- coverage by Gardner all over the OF- and Stanton can move to RF to give Judge a day off while Gardner goes to LF. Andujar at DH would give options at 3B too, in case of injury or days off.
Another possibility- package Andujar and Gray to see what you can get.
I might not agree with the DJ signing, but I can see some possibilities why now.
he would make more from another team if he was a free agent.
That's part of my point. This guy can't stay healthy and has failed at any extended time when healthy. He gets rewarded with a raise.
Obviously, you are new to the arbitration process. This is how it works.
Not new to it. I'm saying this is what is wrong with sports. Salaries are out of control to begin with. And, here is a process that all but guarantees a player a raise (to 7 figures) for nothing.

We can only hope for Greg Bird to hit like Nick Johnson. When he was healthy, NJ was a very good hitter

The Yankees plan to use LeMahieu as a versatile player around the infield. They will use him at second base, first base and third base.
Here would be my approximate splits for the OF out of every 10 games
RF: Judge 8, Stanton 2
CF: Hicks 9, Gardner 1
LF: Frazier 6, Stanton 2, Gardner 2
DH: Stanton 5, Sanchez 2, Judge 1, Bird/Voit 1, Other 1
That tells me pretty much no Manny, and that stinks.
