some thoughts from chris ballard......

thrunthrublue : 1/12/2019 2:15 am
colts GM chris ballard's thoughts from this season, he realized their 2017 inferior play was getting his qb busted into pieces. acquired guard
quenton nelson with his #6 pick, then, second round #6 it was another guard, braden smith. "If the interior of the line performs, Ballard said, the tackles improve too. "It makes a huge difference" he said, "it makes a huge difference in your tackles play. They just gotta push guys by" he also said, so well....."Coaching can take you so far" "The locker room takes you over the top. You've got to have a locker room that can challenge each other, not being.....average. They're the police officers, They've gotta be the ones that solve the problems.

the colts.....are very good. its enjoyable to watch their offensive line give andrew luck lots of time. chris ballard has laid out a magnificent blueprint for winning. protect your quarterback, and rattle theirs. as i recall that is a very similar machine that coach bill parcells built his giants teams into.

and with the #6 pick in the 2019 NFL draft the new york giants select.........

I agree very much
English Alaister : 1/12/2019 4:03 am : link
That you have to have a locker room that polices itself. There are brilliant coaches like Parcells who do a great job but there were also great leaders of men like Carson and George Martin as well as guys like Taylor and Bavaro who led by example on the field. I'm reminded of Parcells' hall of fame speech..."the locker room is a great laboratory for human behavior" etc

I think the Giants upgraded there significantly with Ogletree and Barkley. We need more.
This draft needs to be defense, defense, defense....
GiantGolfer : 1/12/2019 8:09 am : link
And then a little more defense. Shore up the O-Line thru free agency.
Arguably the Exec of the Year here...
bw in dc : 1/12/2019 8:30 am : link
Has cleaned up a lot of the mess caused by his predecessor Grigson.

I think I read the Colts have close to $100M in cap space, too. This team is in position to be a real threat for a long time.

It was certainly obvious the Colts needed to better protect Luck. But to execute that goal with such good selections is just as good as it gets.

That oline is very physical. And a major reason I think they may walk into KC today and dominate.

Culture is huge, too. Its a real art to find the right mix of players who can fit together, despite the differences that will naturally occur. Managing personalities is the key to success at any organization.
He's talking about culture

It's ironic my esteemed colleague above, bw,

is agreeing with this approach considering our 1st year GM is espousing the same approach...and bw has ridiculed said GM and "jints central" at every opportunity...

Good thing the Colts didn't fire Ballard after his first season.

Definitely the exec of the year. The Colts didn't just make the playoffs, they have already won. Great turn around and it was a well laid out and executed plan.

For sure. They were getting Luck destroyed back there. QB needs adequate protection or what's the point of spending a high pick on one?

You have to taylor the offseason moves around the talent pool being available. The draft is loaded with defensive front 7 talent. The nyg offensive puzzle is literally 1 maybe 2 players away from being complete and you dont need stars everywhere.

The defense lacks talent, it lacks an identity and it lacks staying power. It lacks home grown NYG defensive DNA. The giants win when they devote draft resources to the defensive side of the ball. The football gods are pleased when the giants draft angry front 7 players early and often. We havent followed this blueprint in close to a decade. Time to get back to NY Giants football. Draft defense. Players will be available.

Sign the OL via FA.

Signing FA OL sounds great but.......
Chocco : 1/12/2019 11:00 am : link
Almost every other team is trying to do the same thing. You end up overpaying for average players and/or reaching for guys like Omameh. Drafting a lineman like Hernandez (if they are BPA) can set you up for years without killing your cap.

Colts draft this year has a chance to go down as one of

What you have described is a team effort. There is a lot of single player thinking around here as in one player wins and loses games.

You think it would be obvious to anybody that's watched football more than one season.

A lot of that is change in offense too. More running the ball, more short drops.
It's interesting britt
crick n NC : 1/12/2019 12:33 pm : link
Because I "watched" football for years but I figured I knew all that I needed to know so I closed my mind to learning anything new or contrary to what I already knew. This resulted in my overconfidence of incorrect information which often lead to me looking silly. I know more than i used to simply because I questioned what I knew to see if it held up. Unfortunately at times I still fall back into this way of thinking although it seems to mostly happen when I am g t patient enough to let things play out.
Seems

And not wasting high picks on running backs helps, too.

Mack - 4th round, Hines - 4th round, Wilkins - 5th round.
Yeah....
Britt in VA : 1/12/2019 12:48 pm : link
Hell, even this year's performance improved once the offensive line play improved, and yet still people want to credit the improvement to "playing backup QB's", as if that had something to do with our offensive performance vs. the defense.

Just look at the splits between the first half and second half of the season:

1st 8 games:

Sacked 31 times
623 rushing yards averaging 4.2 per carry
77.9 rushing yards per game avg.

last 8 games:

Sacked 16 times
1027 rushing yards averaging 5.0 per carry
128.4 rushing yards per game avg.

Offensive line is the difference. It's glaring.
This is why
PaulN : 1/12/2019 2:56 pm : link
Jerry Reese fucked this up royally. Just because Eli never got hurt doesn't mean it was okay, the guy is not the same QB because he is so gun shy now with so many horrendous Olines, running bums out there year after year just to make himself look good was a disgrace and to see our owner watch it all and do nothing sickened me to death, then he fires Coughlin, the only brains in the outfit and keeps the idiot. With Coughlin as GM and maybe president of some sort he would have made McAdoo work here and would have fixed the Oline right away. Reese and Mara ruined Eli's years here as QB, his best years were ruined.

Come on you know better to use legit facts around here.

As far as Indy goes I like how not only did they fix the line they turned this into a more physical team on both sides of the ball. Something we should do as well

Having a great offensive line can make average backs look good. Imagine what Barkley would do with the Colts offensive line.
