Dolphins eyeing 2020 QB’s via draft per Schefter

Sean : 1/13/2019 11:31 am
This strategy is often talked about here for the Giants. I can’t imagine going about this strategy for any team without acquiring additional draft capital. Also need to have another trade partner willing to make a deal.

It is very hard to go 2-14 / 3-13 in the NFL, even if the team is bad. Every bounce needs to go against you. This is a tough strategy in my opinion.

The Giants aren't losing for a QB

If they lose it will be bacause they suck and need new coaching.

me its a waste of time doing this. You can not know where you will be picking in 2020. The Giants could end up winning 8 games and there is no way they will trade that far up to get a QB. The Giant are in a very good position to get a QB this year and it would be a lot easier if they like one of the QBs this year plus you get a extra year of getting the QB ready.
This could be mis-information

So no one jumps over them for a QB in this draft.
draft capital?
pjcas18 : 1/13/2019 11:41 am : link
is there anything included in draft capital besides draft picks?

I see people starting to say draft capital like a corporate buzzword and every time I try and figure out exactly what it is, it's just draft picks.

a smart thing to do

take all your lumps this year by removing all the bad contracts. lose and have a top pick next year with lots of FA money.

the giants are in a different position than miami in that miami really has few good players and by not adding to the team they are assured to be terrible. the giants have players where that is not a given unless Eli gets even older or they play lauletta
If giants did have eyes on the 2020 qb class or Lawrence the following
micky : 1/13/2019 12:10 pm : link
Then only way to to accumulate lots of draft picks and etc..even that wont gaurantee being able to move up to top half of draft from, say, 20th or so.

Dollars to donuts, Giants arent getting into the mix for qbs anytime soon..have to pick and choose journeymen..or hopes to hit with the Webbs, Lauletta, Nassibs of the world

You don't run a franchise this way. This is not fantasy football. Management and coaches have a responsibility to win and their jobs are based on that. You really think DG and PS are gonna tank another season. Plus wake up you can't possibly build a team in one off season. You have to lay down the bricks year by year. last year we brought in a few players such as Barkley and Hernandez. This year you bring in a few more and so forth. And what are you gonna do tank with the hope of getting a QB that may or may not pan out.

^This. We are not "tanking" this or any other year for any reason, including the hope that doing so puts us in a better position to draft a QB in 2020. My bet is still on drafting another day three QB or a trade with the Vikings for Sloter to compete with Lauletta.
I'm warming up to the idea of drafting Haskins

I like his demeanor. I like his arm. I love that he is a Giants fan and an Eli Manning fan who knows that Eli can still play. I also like that he played in a big arena and did well. NY would not overwhelm him.
i was referring to it being a smart thing for the dolphins
GiantsFan84 : 1/13/2019 12:39 pm : link
i explained why i didn't think it would work for the giants
but to correct you
GiantsFan84 : 1/13/2019 12:41 pm : link
it's management's job to do what is in the best interest of the franchise and in so doing they have to balance short term vs long term. let's not pretend their job responsibilities are different than that. the goal is to build sustained winning
This seems shortsighted given where we are in the prospect evaluation
Strahan91 : 1/13/2019 12:49 pm : link
phase. It wasn't too long ago that the Jets and Bills decided to do the same. Both teams had to trade a king's ransom the following year to move up (and buffalo made the playoffs) to draft Darnold and Allen respectively. Jury is still out on whether or not it was a smart move but both teams had the chance to draft Mahomes and keep their premium picks.

When people say things like "we need to use this offseason to build the defense and OL" I'm reminded of this quote from DG:

Quote:
You draft a quarterback high, and you’re wrong? It sets you back, because then what happens, there are teams that I call, they’re in quarterback hell. They got solid defense, they’ve got a pretty good offensive line, they got some skill players. They … just … can’t … find the trigger guy. And what happens is they go 7-9, 8-8, 9-7, and they never get high enough to get a real guy, and they’re afraid to trade up and trade the farm to get a guy because they’re [No.] 18, 19, 20 draft position. I call that quarterback hell.

The goal should be to pick a quarterback for teams like the Dolphins and Giants *if* there is one that you like a lot in the current draft. Otherwise, you basically have locked yourself into taking one next year no matter the cost, not to mention taking into account the possibility that Herbert, Tua, Fromm regress or get hurt.
Jon Gruden could do this.

Probably nobody else in the NFL right now.
If a team feels like the TOP 4 QBs in 2020
njurygiants : 1/13/2019 9:52 pm : link
Are all better than or equal to the top QB in this draft then it makes a lot of sense. Take top DL or DE in a draft where that is the strength, and then knowing a lot of teams dont need young QBs right now, no matter where you finish the hope is you could get one of the TOP 4 guys next year in a draft that is very stong in QB....

How strong really is it? This year was suppose to be strong and really only Mayfield looks good.
