NFT: Ray Donovan finale

Eman11 : 1/14/2019 12:18 pm
Was that it for the show?

I thought they tied just about everything together pretty well if this is the end and am gonna miss this show if it's indeed over.

Classic Mickey last night - "Great kids come from great fucks". Pretty sure I heard him say it before but it was fitting to hear it again last night.

Thanks for the info. I hadn't heard about it being renewed and that's good news. Fantastic Sunday night cable program IMO.

I really enjoyed this season and liked how it ended. Bridget in the finale threw me for a loop. I guess she's a true Donovan. Casually passing out sandwiches with what was going on in the garage was pretty funny.
Bridget
elisha2014 : 1/14/2019 12:35 pm : link
has now grown into the matriarch of this crazy family. As much as she tried to distance herself - her destiny was always to fill in her mothers shoes.

Funny they completely wrote the son out of the show - that guy is a terrible actor.

That threw me too. She went from a couple of episodes ago telling Ray how she needs to leave and get away from him to the sandwiches, and chain saw in the garage! I friggin loved that!

Then she had the classic line saying she's doing exactly what her mother would do. Now that I know there's another season coming, I think it's going to be fun seeing how far they take her character.

I actually thought it was a dream for a bit because it seemed so far fetched based on her character in the past.

Yeah, that's definitely gonna be a story line next season along with the Alan Alda character. I said to my wife when he first showed up in the mental hospital that this had to be a long running potential story line because he's too famous an actor for such a small role.
Good point on Alda Danny
Eman11 : 1/14/2019 1:17 pm : link
I think one other great storyline could be what they do with Mickey. They didn't really tie that one up and could go in so many different directions with him.

They hinted at what was going to happen but never really followed up with it and I just can't see that being the way they go with him.
I thought maybe it was a dream
pjcas18 : 1/14/2019 1:23 pm : link
too, but Ray wasn't there for the part that seemed the most dream-ish and it would be his dream.

I thought it could be Smitty's dream, his character arc is pretty funny and Aunt Sandy is hilarious and disgusting.

Sandy is a great addition to the cast

So far she hasn't exhibited a single redeeeming quality. Even her jokes are bad. They should loan her to "Shameless."

Her character reminds me of a slightly better version of the character she plays on it's always sunny in Philadelphia (Mac's mother).

When she was talking about having to take a shit I puked in my mouth a little. it's funny how someone like her ends up in show biz.

Agreed. She is a great addition.

Who doesn't love a character smoking and drinking whiskey from the bottle while driving down the road jamming out to some tunes. Lol.

Everything about her just cracks me up, even her jokes. I get a kick out of how she thinks they're hilarious. It must be pretty cool to write a character like that. Nothing is off the table and she plays the part to perfection.
Adding the shrink
Number17 : 1/14/2019 3:15 pm : link
and Ray's openness to it for next season will be interesting. I think it takes it to a sort of Tony Soprano type character -- openly talking to a shrink while engaged in brutal activity.

I also like how the season moved off to NY , rather than stay with the LA environment.
I liked the move to NY too
Eman11 : 1/14/2019 4:26 pm : link
To me it was more realistic by kind of bringing them back to their Northeast roots.

Even though they were from Boston, NYC seemed to be a better fit for them than LA.
This season they got back on track. It was a good season
steve in ky : 1/14/2019 4:32 pm : link
I give the actress that plays Bridget a lot of credit. Out of all these "drama" type shows that featured children she is the first one that didn't suck the life out of the show when the story line involved her. She has pulled off the impossible.

That's true. From her rapper first boyfriend getting gunned down to the teacher to the garage, she's really been a strong evolving character who was portrayed really well.

Too bad we can't say the same for the guy who plays her brother and his story lines. He's fallen the way of most of the children in these types of shows. I think he was even worse all around than AJ on the Sopranos.

Speaking of the Sopranos, the woman who played the mayoral candidate in
Ray Donovan (Lola Glaudino?), was the undercover
FBI agent in the Sopranos hanging out with 'Adrianna'.

I think Ray killed her in the same fashion they did the girl they used for the mugging farce (Lena's friend). And then he took the man that Winslow hired to do the killing to the warehouse and "gave' him to Lena to finish.

I always assumed they moved it to Ny because Liev Schrieber lives in TriBeCa (and has young kids) and he's the Producer and star. And I think I ready he separated from Naomi Watts in late 2016 so maybe he felt it important to remain near his kids at this time.

But I could be wrong. Regardless, i agree Ny/Boston is a better fit.
I watch the show
B in ALB : 1/18/2019 5:19 pm : link
And while it's entertaining, it's just gotten absolutely ridiculous since the first season (the best season, imo).

All of it - the absurd corruption schemes by the politicians and Sam Winslow, the escape by Bunch and Mick (and the fact that they're still at large), Terry's underground fighting, Bridget turning into a criminal like the rest of her family, the wacky "Aunt", the cop and Ray becoming roommates after he tries to jump off a 10 story building to his death, the murder of the big Samoan guy and subsequent cover up - it's all laughably absurd.

I found myself shaking my head today when I finished the latest season. Suspension of disbelief is unbelievably strong in this one.
Like many of these types of shows

realism isn't high on the formula.

So I'm guessing you weren't a True Blood fan then? ;)

Seriously, I get where you're coming from and caught myself a couple of times thinking some things couldn't possibly happen.

Like Bunchy and Mickey escaping and not getting caught, the garage/sandwich Bridget scene with no one noticing etc but I tried not to get hung up on how real or possible things were. Instead I just enjoyed the show for what it was.....a nice fun Sunday night escape from reality show where they kicked ass and swigged whisky.

of the biggest obsurdy that was from episode #1 is how Ray could always drive even though he could barely stand up because he was so drunk.

I completely agree with this thinking. I kept wondering during the finale what happened to Sam. I knew they'd eventually show her but when they finally did, I said great, Ray did her just like Lena's friend got it.

Then when he gave Lena the address to the warehouse it was his way of getting her some revenge for herself. Perfectly written and couldn't have been done any better, IMO.

Bunch isn't technically at large. I believe Ray traded Winslow and the Anita Novak for mayor campaign and Ray got him out.

but yeah, it's beyond suspense of disbelief unrealistic, but entertaining anyway.

It's why I thought that whole scene with Bridget was a dream. Seemed like a dream-like scene from Fargo.
