Offense Wins Games...and Also Wins Championships

Josh in the City : 1/14/2019 2:04 pm
Welcome to the new NFL (or at least the NFL of the recent past) where it's all about offense all the time. It should come as no surprise that the 4 teams in the championship game are the 4 highest scoring offenses in the NFL.

As we enter the offseason I really hope our front office recognizes that this isn't the NFL of 5, 10, 15 years ago. You need to be able to throw the ball and you need to be able to put up a lot of points if you want to compete. And while it's important for us to improve our defense (it at least needs to be competent), we also need to be able to score a ton of points. Continue to fix the oline and please find us a QB!
It's true but you'll also notice

all 4 teams get a pass rush when they need it.

Pats were tied with the Giants with 2nd to least amount of sacks in the NFL.. I really don’t know how they do it
The Giants have a qb, protect him better and he will continue to

excel. Teams won't win a lot of games if the have to put up 50+ points every week, sooner or later they will have to rely on their defense. The Giants lost a few games because the defense could not hold a lead in the 4th quarter, that s not on the defense or the qb!

you know who didnt make the playoffs? The bottom 4 teams in points given up.

Last year, the Eagles defense dominated until the SB. Jax got into the final 4. Tennessee won a game with their defense. Last year the final 4 QBs were.... Foles, Bortles, Brady, and Keenum.

QBs have NOT been dominating this postseason. Brady and Mahomes played very well. But the run games and defenses are dominating right now.
The Giants were 16th in the league in points this past season

It's like people watch 2 playoff games each year, and decide to proclaim something they perceive to be this brand new trend.

When Seattle won the Super Bowl in 2013, what did they have?

They had the #1 defense in football in both points and yards allowed.

When they got back to the SB in 2014, and should have won it again, what did they have?

They had the #1 defense in football in both points and yards allowed.

When Denver won the Super Bowl in 2015, what did they have?

The #4 scoring defense in football, and the fewest yards allowed.

When the Patriots won the Super Bowl in 2016, what did they have?

They had the best scoring defense in football and were 8th in yards allowed.

Defense matters.
As bad as our defense was, we were 23rd this year in pts allowed

The Chiefs defense in that playoff game came out of nowhere

after being miserable all year.

And the best defense I saw play in 2018 is at home in Baltimore making vacation plans.

Balanced teams win.

And sometimes teams that are all-time great at defense win too.

Offenses in 2018. It’s about replacing Eli.

I call it a Josh in the City special.
The chiefs defense came out of nowhere because Reich's gameplan
Zeke's Alibi : 1/14/2019 2:26 pm : link
was awful. Never forced the Chiefs to commit to the run with their whack ass run d. When he did run it was out of shotgun letting their athletes up front to get penetration which is their strength. Reich made comments all week about taking shots, which I didn't take much stock into until gametime. He mistakenly thought he needed to keep pace in a shootout instead of playing a ball control type game on offense and blowing the chiefs dline off the ball play after play. Drove me nuts all game.

it is about replacing Eli. I don't think this twat has started a thread that didn't take a veiled or direct shot at passing on Darnold.

Has any other event in the team's history caused so many fans to make a year-long agenda on it?

Yeah, just another douchey way of pushing an agenda that's already been pushed ad infinitum. Honestly think it's less about Eli and even the Giants than it is about not having anything to say but wanting people to notice you.
Not only that..
Chris684 : 1/14/2019 3:04 pm : link
The guys who are still broken up about passing on Darnold have not only automatically made him great, they've also tried to convince us all that no QB prospect or overall QB class will ever measure up and the Giants are destined for QB hell.

Not at all. It's about dramatically improving our inept offense. But you jumping directly to the Eli Manning debate pretty much says everything...

Actually if you read what you wrote.... you mentioned improving the QB position and referred to great QBing. So your agenda is clear and everyone said the same thing.

And the offense did improve dramatically from 17 to 18. But let’s not let facts get in the way of your tired weekly thread about the QB position.

Saying we have to improve the QB position means I have an agenda? LOOOOOL wtf have you been watching the past 6 years? Thread was about how important offense is in today’s NFL...to not mention the most important offensive position would be pretty counterintuitive. You’re the one that made this about Eli.
Lol sure I did
dep026 : 1/14/2019 7:00 pm : link
.... and this game is about offense anymore?

Funny I am seeing losing scores in the single digits and teens. Keep on rockin Josh. Can’t wait for your thread next week.
Sure. Just ask the 2007 Pats
Mike in Boston : 1/14/2019 7:59 pm : link
Seriously, the last 4 teams in are usually good at most aspects of the game. So find one they have in common in any particular year tells you very little.
Let’s just continue to pretend
Josh in the City : 1/14/2019 8:33 pm : link
that it’s a fluke that the final 4 teams just coincidentally were ranked 1-4 in the NFL in scoring this season.
But that is not the whole story....

Stats tell part of the story: we were bad, period. But my eyes told me more: we are awful. We have some "potential" on the DL, to be solid next year though not studdish. I believe that, especially if a top DL falls to us at #6 because teams move up to take Haskins.

I also am praying LB Carter develops and is a HUGE upgrade to MARTIN. If we cut bait with Vernon, well, we better replace him with a UFa of equal quality but younger (if any....???).

We have a lot of holes. All we can do is pray that our young guys develop AND we have a solid draft again. We have picks, we just need to hit on them ALL. LOL.

Oh, and we can't pay more for UFA's than they are worth again. Mistakes happen, but we had too many with Omameh, Stewart to start on offense alone.
I wonder how many
