NFT: Mavs trying to trade Dennis Smith Jr

The Dallas Mavericks are escalating discussions to find a trade for point guard Dennis Smith Jr., league sources tell ESPN. Phoenix and Orlando have engaged in ongoing talks with Mavs. Smith Jr., has sat out three straight games with what team has termed a sore back.

They think he won’t be good

For Doncic
People still upset
GMEN46 : 1/14/2019 9:47 pm : link
That knicks passed on smith for Frankie? Dallas would love to trade Smith for Frankie, I really hope the knicks pass. Still like frankie long term upside of 12-14 pts, 5-6 assists and solid defense.

They’re both not very good. I would also guess that the Knicks would do that in a heartbeat but Dallas would not. We’ll see what the return is.
Trading Frank for DSJ would be awful

But the Knicks are a dumb fuck team so you never know.
I haven't seen him play lately, but they say he improved his defense
Ira : 1/14/2019 9:58 pm : link
considerably.
The 2017 draft looks like trash
SFGFNCGiantsFan : 1/14/2019 10:00 pm : link
compared to the '18 draft.

And that would still put him at about half the defender Frank is
Defense is one thing

I just have no interest in a ball dominant guard who is not that good. Like my least favorite thing to watch. And I have no idea how a player like that would fit in a team with say KP, KD, Knox, etc.

The ball hog stuff concerns me with Trier as well. Opposing defenders are on to him, you can tell he’s going to get stuffed at the rim sometimes before he even starts his drive. Guy needs to learn to pass.

Thing about Trier is Fizdale has encouraged it. Nicknaming him Iso-Zo early on saying he always has the green light. Maybe he (Fiz) figures cultivate that part of his game while he can and then temper it once KP gets back.
The Knicks are no long "a dumb fuck team."

They're committed to building for the long-term.
after seeing Doncic play the Warriors again last night
santacruzom : 1/14/2019 11:17 pm : link
I think any player on their roster who'd take the ball out of his hands more than 5% of the time he's on the court ought to go.
The Kings were criticized for taking Bagley over Doncic
jdf : 1/15/2019 8:02 am : link
But their management's argument is that they already have a talented ball-dominating guard in DeAaron Fox, and drafting Doncic would have created a similar kind of conflict as we're seeing with Denis Smith Jr.

You could still argue that they should have drafted Doncic anyway, and the team would find a way to work things out with two such skilled players. You can also argue that now the Kings have too many bigs who need minutes. But the Mavs trying to trade Smith seems to lend some credence to their argument.
Smith is definitely better offensive player than Frank
Heisenberg : 1/15/2019 8:06 am : link
I guess it depends on which is more likely to develop? Frank's O or Smith's D?

Doncic
TommyWiseau : 1/15/2019 8:06 am : link
Was my favorite player in the draft, was praying some way the Knicks could move up and get him.

The Knicks would do that deal in a heartbeat to get rid of TH Jr.'s awful contract.

Would you have traded last years pick ( Knox) and the 2019 1st ( top 2 protected) for Doncic? Hawks got the Mavs top 5 protected pick this year but last years pick was 4 spots higher than the Knicks.

I really wish the Knicks were more aggressive in getting the 3rd pick and Doncic. I couldn't believe it at the time that teams were doubting him and obviously even more so now.

Did anything happen with him re coming to the Knicks? Looked like something was in the works a few weeks ago. Now nothing

The Knicks

I think unloading the THJ contract for an expiring is worth the Frank for DSJ swap.
I’ve always said I don’t think
Carl in CT : 1/15/2019 10:25 am : link
this Knick brass will attach any asset in order to get rid of a contract unless there is a reason to do so (iE a big time free agent planning to come) other than that they will just stay the course.
It's a possibility
ghost718 : 1/15/2019 10:38 am : link
The guys running the team seem to have an eye for players like Smith Jr.

They'll probably just stick with the latest get rich quick scheme.Draft, free agency, and Porzingis
DSJ
Jon in NYC : 1/15/2019 10:54 am : link
and Mudiay are similar kinds of players. But DSJ is younger, non expiring and probably more explosive.

I still like Frank more, but I'd be willing to roll the dice if it means clearing 18 mil in cap.

I would if it was top 4-5 protected. Doncic is awesome but Knox has the potential to become a very good player in the NBA in his own right.
I wouldn't want to give up say the 3rd pick in the draft in addition to Knox. It's moot anyways as it was apparent that Atlanta really wanted Trae Young so they wouldn't have moved down that far.
DSJ seems like a real dick

Rick Carlisle says he expected Dennis Smith Jr. to be at #Mavs practice today. Then coach spoke to agent. Then DSJ called in sick. Boiling pot.
