But the only way they keep him is if Foles likes Philly so much and doesn't mind being a backup.
If Foles has that competitive desire in his belly to compete and win as a starter, he will not be on the Eagles next year.
I imagine the Redskins would be interested, as well as the Jaguars and Broncos. And if Eli Manning retires (which I don't expect him to), the Giants. And I would be in favor of that if that scenario presents itself, Eagles SB MVP be damned.
......first, when you have two QBs you have none as John Madden said. Yes it worked out beyond successful with the SB win.
But now, people have a taste of Wentz struggling, and Foles sorta saving the season in 2018. That's going to prove troublesome going forward. Whenever Wentz struggles, teammates, fans, and even some coaches are going to be pulled different ways.
Every team needs a clear cut starter. The Eagles had that in 2017. Last year.......well, it changed to some degree.
Would be a disservice to Wentz, IMO, to keep Foles around.
NFL season played out is going to result in quite a few people being looked at more positively than they should.
It has been the only year that 8 of the teams in playoff spots in Week 5 missed the playoffs.
Teams like the Colts, Texans, Ravens, Cowboys and Eagles were at or below .500 at the midway point of the year. The Seahawks were being written off.
Foles made for a good story as the entire team rebounded, but people are overlooking that he was part of the reason they were in an early hole and why they rushed Wentz back.
Both the Eagles and Cowboys should probably be thankful that the redskins lost so many players to injury or neither may have made the playoffs, but like I said a few weeks ago - 2018 might be a blessing. Dak and Garrett end up looking good and the Eagles now have tough decisions to make.
But he has to agree to that option......per what I have read.
I doubt Foles agrees, so that means the only way to keep him is to franchise him and trade him. Very risky...........esp given the salary he'd be guaranteed for that season.
There is no option to pick up. He's a UFA for 2019. They can franchise tag him for $25 million, but then you also run the risk of not getting a taker in a trade, and have a $25 million dollar backup QB, and I'm guessing Philly would like to address other positions with that money.
Perhaps they do tag him, I'm certain there would be a market for him, but there's only about 2-3 teams that would likely be clamoring for his services. You only need one, but I think the price tag will be too prohibitive for a team like, say, the Jaguars to pony up the $25 million and/or try to work out an extension, with trade compensation, when the teams that are looking for QBs also have the draft upcoming, and you have other stopgaps that should be available such as Ryan Fitzgerald, Bridgewater, and Josh McCown.

I'm guessing he just signs elsewhere.
I agree, just one thing. There is an option for 2019, but both the Eagles and Foles must agree to it. Both parties.............
but the Eagles have a 20 million dollar option that they can use on him, but Foles could pay them 2 million to buy back that option. The only way they can keep and trade him is if they franchise him. That obviously has a lot of risk.
even is he wants to stay and is ok being the backup. Any time Wentz struggles or has nagging injuries people will call for Foles. It's a nice luxury to have a backup QB who has won a Superbowl, but there is most definitely a downside.
And he is in line to get $20,000,000 as a backup...I think I'm taking that $20,000,000.
Sure, he MIGHT get more elsewhere, but that $20,000,000 would be fully guaranteed!
Jim, he'd gets more guaranteed money elsewhere in the form of a multi year deal...it will just be spread out over a longer period for salary cap purposes............
Question is if Philly wants to squeeze 2 million out of him w thr risk he soaks up20 millions of cap space. I’m. It a huge Foles believer but he is better than Keenum and Cousins. And those two for paid. Big.
I can’t see him not getting a very solid multi year offer worth a lot more than 20 million guaranteed

Yeah but that doesn't include the guaranteed money he'd get next year after his 20 million is up. Play it like Cousins.
I looked on Rotoworld which has no mention of the option, but see the Spotrac has a $20,000,000 option for the Eagles to exercise on Foles.
And if they pick it up he can buy it out for 2mil and become a FA.
I don't know the other details like if the Eagles have a window where they could trade him before he exercises his option but I'd imagine he could exercise it as soon as they pick it up. There's no way he'd agree to being traded anywhere when he could be a FA for 2mil and pick where he wants to play.
Plus what team is going to trade for him if they are only guaranteed having him for one year? Maybe there are some but I'd imagine they wouldn't give much up.
It's definitely a tricky situation on both sides and I think the only reason the Eagles did it this way was as insurance in case Wentz got hurt again this year and would miss time next year because of it. This would enable them to keep Foles.
and I doubt other teams are going to throw big money at him. The Eagles aren't paying him $20 million. At best, they will tell him come see us last after the offers are in.
Foles is a system qb who failed in a lot of places and had his day in the sun last year. He was Keenum before there was a Keenum. He didn't do very well early in the season and his performance against both the Bears and the Saints was nothing to write home about. It's not like Philly became a scoring machine with him under center.
Foles can function and do no harm in a pro offense. He's the definition of a game manager, which is of course an echelon lower in value than the top flight QBs.
But he's shown winning in high leverage situations isn't too big a stage for him, and that's something. He's shown he knows his place in the right scenario a couple of times.
If your other 21 can get you there, he's not going to blow it.
3-4 years at $15-$25 million a year. Even if that team undercuts him eventually by finding a rookie, Foles will be playing the game and banking good money. I like him and wish him continued success against everybody but us.

I think Foles has a buyout of that option which makes him an FA this year.
