Going to a show at msg Saturday night. Looking for a nice spot to go with the wife prior to the show. Roughly a 5pm dinner since the show begins at 7. Prefer Italian but really can do anything from steakhouses to Mexican food. Thanks in advance
but if you're really out for Italian - it's not a great neighborhood for it, but there's a decent chain-y type place on 38th called Casa Nonna. Went there once, wasn't bad for a pre-show meal.
Birichino on 29th and 8th is a very good Italian Â
I've gone to Keen's. It was good. I've been to better places but still good. It depends on what you are looking for. If it is a nice sit down dinner then that will bd a good place to go.
I always liked Tir Na Nog by MSG but they moved and it isn't the same feel. It used to be an Irish Bar with pretty good food. Now it is more of a modern bar. If you are looking to drink they'll have a much better selection and good food. Obviously not as good as Keen's but just a different style.
Also, what is the weather supposed to be like? Keen's is a little bit of a walk. Tir Na Nog is legitimately right across the street.
I sas rain amd snow on Friday, snow on Saturday, and rain and snow on Sunday. I have no idea of the accumulations but nkt sure you want to be walking all that far in it.
but if you go there you must avoid screwing up and the way to screw up is to NOT get the mutton chop. You must get the mutton chop.
I know it's extremely popular and I'm in the minority, but that was the one item that came highly recommended and the only thing I've ever eaten at Keens that I was unhappy with.

I got that too and felt similar to you. I wasn't unhappy. I was just not getting the hype especially with the mint jelly.
I will be at the 7pm show. Near the garden gets crowded so the suggestions above are covered well.
jcn is right - Italian near the Garden is a tough find.
La Masseria on 48th
Masseria dei Vini on 9th and 58th
Valbella Midtown E 53rd
these are all cab or Uber rides away but good italian places.
If steakhouse is an option, Wolfgangs (the 4 Park Avenue location) is on Park and 33rd. It's a few avenue blocks and if you drive, you may find parking just outside the Garden Event rates.
Saturday is supposed to be a bit chilly - have fun at the show. If you see a very good looking gentleman with a gorgeous blond in her 20s, that's not me.
I often go to Brother Jimmy's if I am near Penn. Fun, cheap, decent food, good selection of beverages.
and Gatorade Dunk is not wrong.
Kabooz' Buffalo Wings are surprisingly good. I take the Acela from Boston to Penn Station at least twice a month and try and book my return trip at a time where I can stop and get wings from Kabooz. Their burgers are decent too.
I second Keens Steakhouse and be sure to check out the largest collection of churchwarden pipes!

cassa nonna on 38th is great italian, a few blocks further.
tir na nig is a great irish place on 31st and 8th.
brother jimmy's also fun and cheap.
stout nyc on 32 off 7th is great beer, and bar style food
also like the district, 2 locations on 37th/8th, and 38th/8th.
For good atmosphere and mexican, you can hit lucy's cantina right on the corner of 34th/8th.
