#Yankees closing on free-agent reliever Adam Ottavino, sources tell me and @Ken_Rosenthal. Agreement, if completed, expected to be in the three-year, $25 million range.

Ottavino to the Yankees, according to @JeffPassan and @JonHeyman. The Yankee bullpen is ridiculously talented.
he went to high school with my kids in Brooklyn and pitched for that high school team - from where I sit, it's kind of wild to think that he may be pitching for the Yankees now.

It's a done deal...He will be pitching for the Yankees.
RE: RE: I don't get preferring this guy to Robertson
This is a bit cheaper, and a lot of the metrics/analytics brains believe in Ottavino's 2018. He spent a lot of time diving into that stuff last offseason, and it paid off.
Also...you're not really being fair on this one. Since 2013, his numbers have been good with the exception of 2017. 2017 was the outlier.
Nothing is guaranteed. I'm a believer that Ottavino's got the better stuff at this point. I preferred him to Robertson at equal dollars, and this is a bit cheaper per year. I'll take it; just my opinion.
Think Rockies will miss Ottavino? Hide your eyes. Held hitters to .120 average at Coors Field last season in 34 1/3 ip. Overall, held hitters to .158 average, including .142 mark for righties. He fanned 67 righties in 149 at-bats. Total dominance. Good bye slider, my old friend
It sounded like Robertson leaving was about more than the dollars for both sides. The story on both guys goes further than the stats though. Robertson seemed to show cracks last year and may be on the downslop. Ottavino meanwhile there are very clear improvements/differences that led to his 2018 monster season. For that reason, it doesn't seem nearly as flukey as many past relievers with random outlier years.
of better to let someone go a year too early than a year too late. I think the Yankees got the final last good bit out of him and it was the right time to move on.
But look at this pen, wow:
Chapman
Betances
Britton
Ottavino
Green
Holder
Kahnle
German
Assuming a healthier Britton this year and if Kahnle can come back, they are going to be hard to deal with.

the Yankees got him and the price looks like its dropped compared to other relievers in this offseason, but just hope some market develops for Kimbrel now. Would hate for the Red Sox to get another JD Martinez deal with Kimbrel since they're the last one standing and his market drops.
after a longggggggg battle with the concussion like symptoms im happy to tell u ive been cleared to participate in spring training and go after what ive wanted since being traded over here, to win an outfield job and show u guys what i can do. im readyyyyyyy. Link - ( New Window )

I think everything is going to fall into Philly's lap. There have been the rumors they are going to land Harper, Kimbrel and Keutchel.

Tweet from @JonHeyman: Yankees are working hard now on a trade for Sonny Gray. Appears to be getting more serious. Teams involved have included: reds, giants, brewers, as, padres, braves, mariners.

Cessa is out of options, German is not.
Keeps him away from the Sox, whose pen is utter trash
We are looking good. We always had power but pitching is what we needed most and a strong bullpen can more than compensate for good but not great rotation.
but last year he had the advantage that he had an option and so could be stashed in the minors. This year he's out of options, so they'll have to carry him or deal/DFA him. It seems like a better bet to deal him now.
Harper. Bat him 3rd. Watch him, Stanton, and Judge hit 40 bombs each. Have every game resemble something out of MLB The Show '19. Complete dominance. Make it quite evident that by May 1st, the entire planet knows who is winning the World Series.
but possible high-reward. A decent RP checks off another item on my Yankees checklist (if he signs). Now if they can only find another quality SP and #3 hitter (possibly Manny) I'll be a happy Yankee fan.
That adds up to to $51m, so equating all of those players to Machado is an arithmetic fail.
More pertinent is the $30m spent on Gardner, Sabathia and Lemahieu that could have covered either Harper or Machado.
Yanks should win 100 games because there are so many bad teems. It's all about the postseason, when Sabathia shouldn't pitch and Gardner and Lemahieu shouldn't play.
highlights from last year and it looks like this guy was throwing a damn wiffle ball. Unbelievable late breaking movement - down, across, inside and outside. Nasty stuff.
Yanks won 4 of 5 before they stated adding superstars. They won with solid players a great deep starting staff, and a good and deep bullpen.
When they started adding the superstars like AROD, Sheffield, and Giambi, that is when they started to fail in the post season.
You don't need Machado on this team, let Andujar develop, he may turn out better then Machado, but what is the point of talking to spoiled fucking brat fans who know shgit about the game.

This is true. Sanchez with him on the mound will be an adventure.

Didn't he have the most holds in the league? And like a 2.6 Era? Seems to be an upgrade to me.
Now go sign Machado.

Last year, maybe. I was talking about 2 years ago when he was pure garbage.
We also have no idea if this guy can handle pressure - he's spent his entire career in Colorado. Robertson was battle-tested.

Yeah, but according to Greg, he sucks.
...probably the best Bullpen in baseball EVER.

Ottavino's 2018 season wasn't a fluke - he scrapped his 4 seamer and revamped his entire approach.
Wanted Britton and Ottavino to be the 2 RP's we retained/added, so I'm happy.
I think even without Machado, NYY have had a strong offseason and have a very, very good roster right now.
No reason this team can't win 100 games again.
Britton
Ottavino
Le Mahieu
Happ

@PeteAbe
Yankees high-leverage relievers at the moment: Chapman, Betances, Britton, Ottavino.
Red Sox high-leverage relievers at the moment: Barnes, Brasier.
Sox have built a luxury home with no locks on the door.

Yankees are indeed close to trading Sonny Gray. Teams are also asking about Tommy Kahnle and Jonathan Holder.

I'm no fan of Kahnle. If they can dump him for anything, I'd be fine with it.
