#Yankees closing on free-agent reliever Adam Ottavino, sources tell me and @Ken_Rosenthal. Agreement, if completed, expected to be in the three-year, $25 million range.
Yanks won 4 of 5 before they stated adding superstars. They won with solid players a great deep starting staff, and a good and deep bullpen.
When they started adding the superstars like AROD, Sheffield, and Giambi, that is when they started to fail in the post season.
You don't need Machado on this team, let Andujar develop, he may turn out better then Machado, but what is the point of talking to spoiled fucking brat fans who know shgit about the game.
Why are you so angry? Every time I read your posts, you're calling people idiots, morons, etc...
highlights from last year and it looks like this guy was throwing a damn wiffle ball. Unbelievable late breaking movement - down, across, inside and outside. Nasty stuff.

I agree with this but without the crappy attitude.
I don't think we even know what Andujar's ceiling is at this point. Plus he's a big part of this young clubhouse chemistry.
I'd be very happy with Harper at 1st, but count me as very skeptical of Machado and his "me first" reputation.
Can't hurt to add another top reliever. I'm claiming to be a centrist though, between arc and greg. I like the signing, but I wouldn't be shocked if this guy regressed after last year. But, I'm willing to hope that the Yanks front office knows a bit more and that this guy's last year is also his future.
If they can add some good prospects with a Gray deal, that'd be nice.
Just a tiny hunch, but I think we may have let Robertson walk at the right time. We'll see if that turns out to be true or not... but I'd be willing to bet Ottavino has the better 2019+.
Now, let's get Gray out of here next.
I know there's not really anything of substance to the Harper @ 1B stuff - but that would turn what I feel has been a very strong offseason to a grand slam.
I just remember hearing the exact same kinds of things when they Â
brought Kahnle back - oh, he totally changed his approach and he's going to dominate for years! And then 2018 happened.
Anyway, as I mentioned, I'm always suspicious of NL pitchers coming to the AL East more than anything.
Kahnle is a one-pitch guy- pure power FB. However, from the day he was drafted, his command has been spotty. The White Sox found something that fixed some issues- but then his shoulder acted up early last year and it was downhill from there.
While I don't mind trading him, as the rumors suggested above, he is a nice last man in the bullpen option.
Ottavino completely remade himself as a pitcher- junked the four-seamer, went with the 2-seamer and a killer slider. He enbraced video analysis to improve his best release point and got on board with analytics. In the bullpen, you can get away with a nice breaking ball and strong FB- see Betances and Chapman.
As for the whole NL pitcher coming to the AL East- that's nonsense. Did Kimbrell struggle at all coming from the NL? Nope. Good pitchers are good pitchers, regardless of where they come from.
but in Ottavino's case he's coming from a notoriously difficult park for pitchers to a Yankee Stadium that, while still small, doesn't present the same challenges. If he keeps up that minuscule HR rate he could be elite again.
Mid year trade possibilities of the lower ranked Rp allows some minor league guys to get a chance
Mid year trade of one of the top closers can make the core of the franchise ( witness Torres)
Less innings for Severino, Paxton and Tanaka that get covered by a great bullpen is a big post season help
In a race with the Sox, a bullpen like this makes a 3 win or more difference.
Im also impressed with Britton and especially Ottavino who both tried new things embraced more analytics and work to improve.
The Yankees have a lot of players who are disciplined grinds and true professionals ( Stanton, Judge, Romine, Andujar, Gardner, Hicks are all mentioned as guys who work hard at their routines and adding advantages to their games).
I think RAB did a bit on Britton and his re-introducing of his 4-seamer with the Yanks last year. It seemed like he only really used it as a "behind in the count and need to throw a strike" pitch when his sinker wasn't hitting the corner. It wasn't really a "weapon" or anything, but I wonder if it's a pitch he'll try to re-introduce to his arsenal more after basically scrapping it entirely.
Harper. Bat him 3rd. Watch him, Stanton, and Judge hit 40 bombs each. Have every game resemble something out of MLB The Show '19. Complete dominance. Make it quite evident that by May 1st, the entire planet knows who is winning the World Series.
I want Harper too. I know the lefty righty hitter thing can be overstated but the Yankees win WS titles when they have a legit power hitting lefty in their lineup. It’s like the NY giants with defense they need it to win big.
With the playoff shares. Go look it up, that’s a big reason imo why he isn’t back
The past few years, the Yankees have taken an unfortunate page from the Red Sox PR playbook to shit on guys who are about to leave in order to soften the blow to the fan base. Boston was the worst in the mid 2000s doing this. I think the Yankees decided that all things being equal, they were going to go in the direction they went (ie- signing Britton and Ottavino) and wanted to move on from Robertson. With the prospect of Robertson talking to Boston and knowing that he's built up good will with fans, I think they planted that shares story to shit on him a bit. I'm not saying it's not true and he seemed to act like a dick, but the timing was very curious for the story to be leaked. It's a very Randy Levine move, who is one of the biggest pricks in baseball.

I could be wrong but I believe Robbie was just the team rep and did what his players voted to do. Sure he had a say, but his say and vote carried the same weight as any other full time player.
I think the playoff shares deal would've ended up the same way with anyone repping the team and Robbie was just the fall guy.

Agree with every word of this.
The playoff shares thing was a labor power move that backfired when only one team went along, and it made them look petty. Robertson probably puts more in the offering plate on Sunday than he got extra with the playoff shares move. It was about sending a message and it failed because the Yankees were the only ones who did it.
This smacks of the Yankee brass trying to cushion the blow for a very defensible decision to let a fan favorite walk.

Levine?? More likely Cashman, the Baldrick of baseball, who has his press toadies lauding his next cunning plan while the Red Sox keep stealing his lunch money and eating his lunch.
If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck ......... Â
At this point Ottavino and Britton are better pitchers than Robertson. That's why they're here and he's not. Its as simple as that. I'm saying that as a big Robertson fan. I was pissed when Cashman let him walk a few years ago and elated when they brought him back. For all the talk of his decline all his bad games seemed to occur when he was brought in trailing or tied. I can't recall him blowing a lead. That being said he's not worth a three year deal to the extent that Britton and Ottavino are.

The best part of the recent signings is the Yanks have Chapman, Britton, Ottavino, Green and Holder locked in for the next three years. Chapman can opt out after this year, but he is due to make $17 mil a year and loves being a Yankee. Betances is a free agent after this year. Some team will probably offer him top money to be a closer. The hope is Domingo Acevedo and his 100 mph gas will be ready to step in by then and lefty Stephen Tarpley could become a fixture in the pen as well. If Kahnle straightens out, he is controlled for 2019 and 2020. It's a great luxury not having to go into every off-season trying to build a bullpen.

Calm down.
Yup. Bugs Bunny stuff.

He had a fantastic 2017 - and he pitched well here and with CHW, so it wasn't just a small sample with NYY.

Chemistry matters in a season of 164 games
Hope we can add Gary to that list
Ottavino looks great but he doesn't have anywhere near the track record of Robertson.
