NFT: Rumor: Yankees ask Bryce Harper about 1B

PetesHereNow : 1/17/2019 3:23 pm
I live in Vegas. Diehard Yankee fan. Rumor some people are hearing around town is that the Yankees have swooped in to ask Harper about playing 1B.

Its only a rumor. Makes sense to me as Harper is from Vegas.
Rather that than Machado
UConn4523 : 1/17/2019 3:27 pm : link
.
Harper asked the Nats last year if he could play some 1B.
robbieballs2003 : 1/17/2019 3:27 pm : link
Now they had OFs and were dealing with injuries at 1B if I remember correctly but some felt he was doing this to make himself more attractive to the Yanks knowing we had issies at 1B. He can also play centerfield as well. I think he fits in very nicely.
Is this an old rumor?

He was taking grounders at 1B during pregame warm ups when we played at NYY this season and a story about it came out right after that.
lol Harper in Center?

He's awful in right. First base would be good if he would do it.

Adding Harper to play 1B would turn this offseason into a Grand Slam.

Actually he was an above average right fielder but last year according to metrics he was bad because of a multitude of reasons. One, he played more center than in the past. Two, he was dealing with injuries last which, I think, included a knee injury.

So, while I am not saying he is an every day CF, I am saying he would give us some flexibility in the almost certain event that Hicks gets hurt again.

I really prefer Harper to Machado
NoGainDayne : 1/17/2019 3:50 pm : link
Machado makes me very uncomfortable. Even at a lower price point. It's not just the effort but part of a larger picture that he just seems like a guy that could get paid and stop caring.

Harper seems like the opposite. He might have the same inconsistencies as Machado (some years more stellar than others) but he really strikes me as a guy that wants to be great and wants to win.

Both are upper, upper echelon baseball talents. But to me this is why one is much more exciting than the other.

Don't get me wrong, Machado could definitely work out and has less of an injury concern than Harper but give me the guy that wants it more every time.

He was awful last year. Other years he wasn't bad. At his typical performance, he'd still be the worst RFer on the team, after Judge and Stanton. And he can't play centerfield at yankee stadium, cmon.

Frankly, I don't think Harper is a great fit as an OFer, given the other guys we have. But if he will play first, I'm all in.

If hes into it, make it so Yanks!
mfsd : 1/17/2019 4:14 pm : link
Makes a ton of sense for the Yankees...lefty bat to balance the lineup, power stroke made for Yankee stadium, athletic enough that he could probably be at least average in the field at 1B.

Plus, then everyone else can cry about the Yankees being the Yankees again, which is the way it should be. Say hello to the bad guy.
How recent is the article

whether it's in 1B, LF, or wherever there's an opening on a given day. No way to gussie it up. Unless they're going to cut Ellsbury and probably trade Frazier.

But lineup-wise, we can dream. That would be the best 2-3-4 I've ever seen.

A good, thorough article on what went wrong for Harper last year
Milton : 1/17/2019 7:47 pm : link
And why to expect better results this year and down the road....
From CBS Sports - ( New Window )
And here's an article on how he improved...
Milton : 1/17/2019 7:52 pm : link
...over the second half of last season (from his batting coach).
Quote:
In the end, all that stuff that happened to him will make him better, Long said. He learned more about himself. He learned his value. His value is not in trying to hit home runs. His value is putting together good at-bats and hitting line drives, and some of those line drives will end up home runs. He really thought he could elevate his game by hitting more home runs. He has hit 40, and he thought he could elevate to 55 to 60. He found that wasnt the case the hard way.
Quote:
"I would say Im proud of the fact that he turned it around, Long said. Listen, its different when you start off and youre .350 and then you kind of come back down to earth and you end up at .280. But when your numbers say .209 at the All-Star Break, and you end up hitting .250, do you know what he had to do to do that? Its pretty phenomenal. And he didnt do it with hitting home runs. He did it by basically getting back to his roots. And his roots were, hes always been a line drive hitter with home run power. He was kind of doing it the opposite, and he had talked about how he had worked on that in the offseason, and you go into the season, you give it a shot, and it didnt work, so he was able to make some adjustments, and I was proud of the fact that he was able to turn it around.

link - ( New Window )
If this came true...
Dan in the Springs : 1/17/2019 10:00 pm : link
the lineup would be?

1. Hicks CF
2. Judge RF
3. Harper 1B
4. Stanton DH
5. Sanchez C
6. Andujar 3B
7. Torres 2B
8. LeMahieu/Tulo SS (Didi later on?)
9. Frazier/Gardner LF

Is that right?

Pitching rotation:

Sevy
Paxton
Tanaka
Happ
CC
Montgomery/Loaisiga/Grey/German/Adams/Abreu?

Relief
Betances
Chapman
Ottavino
Britton
Green
Acevedo/Adams/Cessa/Holder/Kahnle/Tarpley?

Sorry, but that team would HAVE to win more than 100 games or it would be a big-time disappointment. Expectations for NYY fans would be through the roof.
Sign me up for that lineup/roster right now
Eman11 : 1/17/2019 10:14 pm : link
Then when Didi comes back I can see him in the 5 or 6 hole sliding Miggy and Gleyber down making this one helluva tough lineup to navigate for any pitcher. We'd have Gardy/Frazier in the 9 hole to turn the lineup over and give pitchers even more trouble.

It also gives us a lot of flexibility for moving guys around in the order if someone is struggling or to get favorable matchups against certain pitchers.

Throw in the bullpen which on paper looks like the best in the game and I can't wait to watch that team this year.

C'mon Cashman, get this done! We need another potent lefty bat in the middle of the lineup and Harper would be a huge get.

I dunno where OJ lives.

NOT going to happen...
M.S. : 1/18/2019 5:45 am : link

And for the same reason as when free agency began weeks and weeks ago.

Bingo. Signing either of the two Machado or Harper would put that at the highest threshold of the luxury tax which isn't going happen.
I think going into this offseason
Matt in SGS : 1/18/2019 9:34 am : link
Hal set the budget, which did go over the luxury tax threshhold, but not the highest tier

So Cashman was presented with the option:

Go the route of signing several guys to shore up the rotation and bullpen and find a solution to Didi being out

Or sign one of Machado or Harper and go with less in the pitching department.

I think the Yankees did throw money away on Gardner and CC. I would have preferred they just either let Frazier try to get the spot or go with some type of platoon thing with Stanton spending time out there. $7.5M for a declining Gardner I didn't like.

And bringing back CC at $8M was another head scratcher. I know that they wanted a bird in hand. I would have looked in another direction.

Anyway, if you listen to Jack Curry on YES, you have to realize you are getting the state sponsored news. When Curry says his "sources" tell him something on the YES Hot Stove, I crack up because I can imagine Randy Levine or Cashman pretty much sitting within his line of view behind the cameraman. Curry mentioned that Machado at his price tag didn't get a unanimous vote among the front office to sign him. When you are talking about a $200M+ player, with the political machinations of the Yankees front office, no one is going to sign up for that contract until everyone agrees. When he gave that report, I think he spelled it out. The Yankees don't want to spend that money on him, period. And Cashman shot down Harper way early.

The Yankees will trade Gray for prospects and call it a day.

I wouldn't be shocked, but right now you have

- Sevy
- Tanaka
- Paxton
- Happ
- CC

Montgomery will be back at some point around the All Star break.

My dream scenario is they use Gray and Andujar in a package with the Padres in a 3 way trade that would route Kluber to the Yankees. I don't know if the Indians need to trade him as much anymore since they were able to find other salary relief.

Strahan91 : 1/18/2019 10:59 am : link
in long relief until if/when they need a starter given the uncertainty surround Montgomery. Think Lance Lynn last year or Garcia the year before.

What's really missing is a lefty bat (doesn't seem like they agree) and a TOR starter. The latter I'm sure they and everyone else in baseball would love but it doesn't seem like it's happening. Maybe Bumgarner has a strong first half and becomes available as a half year rental. Otherwise, hopefully Severino can do what he did in the first half all year and maybe they can sign a Gerrit Cole or maybe even Wheeler in the offseason if both guys have seasons like this past one.

In the shift era, Harper and Yankee Stadium are a toxic mix. Harper has traditionally been a pull hitter- and while he would hit 40+ HR, there would be a TON of grounders into the shift. That's where Harper's kryptonite would become clear- his anger would boil over and he would become the sulking player you saw in the first half of 2018 with the Nats.

There is a reason why the Yanks have added so many righty bats over the past several years and shed the lefties. The numbers against the shift in the Stadium just don't work.

In agree in the sense of not obsessing about LH bats.

I would point out that Harper tore down his approach a bit midway through last year (Kevin Long had some good quotes on it), stopped trying to pull and launch. Started using all fields and letting his more natural line drive swing-path play. The 2H spray figures/charts show the change, and the results that followed were absurdly good. High average, tons of SLG, same sky-high walk rate, K rate in the teens.

I personally think he'd be great in YS (as he would be anywhere).

Regardless, NYY signing Harper feels like a tail event probability-wise, IMO.
correction to my post
bigbluehoya : 1/18/2019 11:24 am : link
K rate was low 20s. 18.5% BB / 23.8% K. Still absurdly good.
I don't understand why Harper has a problem with the shift. He
wgenesis123 : 1/18/2019 11:35 am : link
has the speed to bunt and destroy a shift. They never would have got away with the shift against Mantle. He would have been getting doubles on bunts.

Why WOULDN'T you want Harper on this team? You prefer Voit and Bird over him? What a strange opinion.

I wonder if he was steadfast about play shortstop. That, or they may view Machado's personality as a risk at that price and length whereas Arenado is the better player without it. Still, it begs the question. If you *could* (uncertain) get a TOR starter for Andujar and sign Machado, that's probably a better option than just trading Andujar for Arenado and signing him to an extension.

He could also sign an extension with the Angels who can spend when they want to and likely will want to move heaven and earth to get him to stay. He doesn't seem like a guy who totally loves the spotlight either so he may prefer that. There are just a lot of unknowns and as good as Trout is, his FA in two years shouldn't effect what the Yankees do today. That would be different if this were 2015 or 2016 but this team is damn close with a lot of guys in their prime so they should be focused on winning the WS this year and next and worry about 2+ years from now when the time comes.

whatever way you want to consume your entertainment. I've been going to Yankee games since 1965. Believe me the money I spent in the Stadiums 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 was real.

There are things about the Yankees I can't stand at this point starting with the L&L boys. Blind loyalist = fool to me.

If anyone has a problem with that it's their problem. I could care less about how anyone evaluates "fandom".

For the record I want the Yankees to sign Harper too. Anyone who doesn't want to add a career 400 OBP player to the Yankees for nothing but Stein kids money can't be a real fan right?

The Red Sox out spent the Yankees by 50 million last year. How did that work out? Even after all the Yankees winter moves so far the Red Sox are still spending 25 million more and they don't have Kimbrel back yet.

Martino says the Yankees could trade for Arenado sooner rather than later Link - ( New Window )

My cynical side interprets this as a Yankees-sourced leak applying some pressure to Machado.

But Martino is more of a Mets shill, I'm not sure he'd be a guy NYY would use to get out such a message.

You might be onto something there. It has been reported by many that Manny WANTS to be a Yankee. Maybe the Yanks are giving him the "we have other options, act now" message?

Its just my opinion, but if we had to choose between Machado and Harper, I'm all in on Machado (not a surprise to anyone here, I'm sure). A lot easier to plug him at 3B, park Andujar at DH and Stanton in LF than it is to try and fit Harper in.

How is that easier than just rotating Harper/Judge/Stanton between LF/RF/DH? And giving each of the big sluggers a "half day" off twice a week would hopefully help keep them healthy and close to 100%.

Harper, Machado and Kimbrel. Let's build a 400mm superteam. Why not?

Because playing LF and RF are completely different things- Harper and Judge have not played LF in years, if ever. Stanton really struggled in LF defensively early last year, as it was a positions that he had not played before. If he was to go out there regularly, he would probably improve over time. But asking the 3 to rotate in and out of two different OF roles is probably asking for trouble.

Sign them all. Although I can't stand looking at Kimbrel and the Yankees don't need him. But Manny and Harper? Sure why not. Not my money and no one needs to take up a collection for the Yankees.
I like the idea of adding a #1 draft pick C

He had a pretty good year in high A which is a tough hitters league. Big kid not sure if he can stay at C or not.

In Sonny Gray talks, Yankees have shown interest in 2B prospect Shed Long and C prospect Tyler Stephenson from Reds, among others, who have a nice prospect list. A draft pick could also factor into a potential Sonny deal.

Exactly. Thats why you seem him in the end zone for many of the Eagles home games.

If he gets out of LA, hes heading to Philly.

really like Long. Real pop despite his size (he's underrated due to his size in my view). Not big on Stephenson. Can't throw, oft-injured and despite his size his pop hasn't really shown up. Long would be a nice get. I think he could be a Neil Walker level MLB regular.

The Reds have the third overall comp pick in what is termed "Compensatory Round A"- which are the 6 comp picks that come after round 1. That would be a VERY big pickup.

Assuming that AJ Pollack signs for more than $50M, that pick would be the #37 overall pick, If Pollack signs for less than $50, it would be the #36 overall pick.

Just for point of reference, the slot value for the #36 overall pick was $1.967,900. That would likely increase by some percentage this season, which would add $2M to the draft pool IF the Yanks got that pick from the Reds. That would be HUGE.

The people there were nuts about the Eagles. That passion did not seem to extend to the Phillies. Trout knew going into the draft that the Yankees were interested in him and he was thrilled with the prospect of putting on the pinstripes in Yankee Stadium. It is not a Philly suburb but it sure seemed like it during football season.
