Now they had OFs and were dealing with injuries at 1B if I remember correctly but some felt he was doing this to make himself more attractive to the Yanks knowing we had issies at 1B. He can also play centerfield as well. I think he fits in very nicely.
He's awful in right. First base would be good if he would do it.
Actually he was an above average right fielder but last year according to metrics he was bad because of a multitude of reasons. One, he played more center than in the past. Two, he was dealing with injuries last which, I think, included a knee injury.
So, while I am not saying he is an every day CF, I am saying he would give us some flexibility in the almost certain event that Hicks gets hurt again.
Machado makes me very uncomfortable. Even at a lower price point. It's not just the effort but part of a larger picture that he just seems like a guy that could get paid and stop caring.
Harper seems like the opposite. He might have the same inconsistencies as Machado (some years more stellar than others) but he really strikes me as a guy that wants to be great and wants to win.
Both are upper, upper echelon baseball talents. But to me this is why one is much more exciting than the other.
Don't get me wrong, Machado could definitely work out and has less of an injury concern than Harper but give me the guy that wants it more every time.

He was awful last year. Other years he wasn't bad. At his typical performance, he'd still be the worst RFer on the team, after Judge and Stanton. And he can't play centerfield at yankee stadium, cmon.
Frankly, I don't think Harper is a great fit as an OFer, given the other guys we have. But if he will play first, I'm all in.
Makes a ton of sense for the Yankees...lefty bat to balance the lineup, power stroke made for Yankee stadium, athletic enough that he could probably be at least average in the field at 1B.
Plus, then everyone else can cry about the Yankees being the Yankees again, which is the way it should be. Say hello to the bad guy.
whether it's in 1B, LF, or wherever there's an opening on a given day. No way to gussie it up. Unless they're going to cut Ellsbury and probably trade Frazier.
But lineup-wise, we can dream. That would be the best 2-3-4 I've ever seen.
...over the second half of last season (from his batting coach).
Quote:
In the end, all that stuff that happened to him will make him better, Long said. He learned more about himself. He learned his value. His value is not in trying to hit home runs. His value is putting together good at-bats and hitting line drives, and some of those line drives will end up home runs. He really thought he could elevate his game by hitting more home runs. He has hit 40, and he thought he could elevate to 55 to 60. He found that wasnt the case the hard way.
Quote:
"I would say Im proud of the fact that he turned it around, Long said. Listen, its different when you start off and youre .350 and then you kind of come back down to earth and you end up at .280. But when your numbers say .209 at the All-Star Break, and you end up hitting .250, do you know what he had to do to do that? Its pretty phenomenal. And he didnt do it with hitting home runs. He did it by basically getting back to his roots. And his roots were, hes always been a line drive hitter with home run power. He was kind of doing it the opposite, and he had talked about how he had worked on that in the offseason, and you go into the season, you give it a shot, and it didnt work, so he was able to make some adjustments, and I was proud of the fact that he was able to turn it around.
1. Hicks CF
2. Judge RF
3. Harper 1B
4. Stanton DH
5. Sanchez C
6. Andujar 3B
7. Torres 2B
8. LeMahieu/Tulo SS (Didi later on?)
9. Frazier/Gardner LF
Is that right?
Pitching rotation:
Sevy
Paxton
Tanaka
Happ
CC
Montgomery/Loaisiga/Grey/German/Adams/Abreu?
Relief
Betances
Chapman
Ottavino
Britton
Green
Acevedo/Adams/Cessa/Holder/Kahnle/Tarpley?
Sorry, but that team would HAVE to win more than 100 games or it would be a big-time disappointment. Expectations for NYY fans would be through the roof.
Then when Didi comes back I can see him in the 5 or 6 hole sliding Miggy and Gleyber down making this one helluva tough lineup to navigate for any pitcher. We'd have Gardy/Frazier in the 9 hole to turn the lineup over and give pitchers even more trouble.
It also gives us a lot of flexibility for moving guys around in the order if someone is struggling or to get favorable matchups against certain pitchers.
Throw in the bullpen which on paper looks like the best in the game and I can't wait to watch that team this year.
C'mon Cashman, get this done! We need another potent lefty bat in the middle of the lineup and Harper would be a huge get.
love to add Harper. I think his fiery personality would actually help the Yankees. Obviously we could use a lefty like him, Its gonna be tough to watch him play elsewhere. That guy was born to be a Yank.
Hal set the budget, which did go over the luxury tax threshhold, but not the highest tier
So Cashman was presented with the option:
Go the route of signing several guys to shore up the rotation and bullpen and find a solution to Didi being out
Or sign one of Machado or Harper and go with less in the pitching department.
I think the Yankees did throw money away on Gardner and CC. I would have preferred they just either let Frazier try to get the spot or go with some type of platoon thing with Stanton spending time out there. $7.5M for a declining Gardner I didn't like.
And bringing back CC at $8M was another head scratcher. I know that they wanted a bird in hand. I would have looked in another direction.
Anyway, if you listen to Jack Curry on YES, you have to realize you are getting the state sponsored news. When Curry says his "sources" tell him something on the YES Hot Stove, I crack up because I can imagine Randy Levine or Cashman pretty much sitting within his line of view behind the cameraman. Curry mentioned that Machado at his price tag didn't get a unanimous vote among the front office to sign him. When you are talking about a $200M+ player, with the political machinations of the Yankees front office, no one is going to sign up for that contract until everyone agrees. When he gave that report, I think he spelled it out. The Yankees don't want to spend that money on him, period. And Cashman shot down Harper way early.
The Yankees will trade Gray for prospects and call it a day.
if they are truly out on Machado and Harper, i think they trade Gray and sign a depth starter.
Shields / Estrada / Gio / Miley / Bucholz...someone like that.
I wouldn't be shocked, but right now you have
- Sevy
- Tanaka
- Paxton
- Happ
- CC
Montgomery will be back at some point around the All Star break.
My dream scenario is they use Gray and Andujar in a package with the Padres in a 3 way trade that would route Kluber to the Yankees. I don't know if the Indians need to trade him as much anymore since they were able to find other salary relief.

need CC insurance. They don't seem inclined to use Loaisiga for that purpose, I think they want to keep him in the minors on a steady schedule. Could be wrong.
Yanks are done, all the spoiled brat baby fake Yankee fans have to live with it. Real Yankee fans see Cashman as doing a great job and don't have to have a baby rattle to brag about, they are informed and happy with these moves and are excited for the season to start. Bird and Voit at first are a good combination, there is zero sense to any of this shit.

Did you have a stroke before you wrote that or during? Baby rattle?!
in long relief until if/when they need a starter given the uncertainty surround Montgomery. Think Lance Lynn last year or Garcia the year before.
What's really missing is a lefty bat (doesn't seem like they agree) and a TOR starter. The latter I'm sure they and everyone else in baseball would love but it doesn't seem like it's happening. Maybe Bumgarner has a strong first half and becomes available as a half year rental. Otherwise, hopefully Severino can do what he did in the first half all year and maybe they can sign a Gerrit Cole or maybe even Wheeler in the offseason if both guys have seasons like this past one.
love to add Harper. I think his fiery personality would actually help the Yankees. Obviously we could use a lefty like him, Its gonna be tough to watch him play elsewhere. That guy was born to be a Yank.
In the shift era, Harper and Yankee Stadium are a toxic mix. Harper has traditionally been a pull hitter- and while he would hit 40+ HR, there would be a TON of grounders into the shift. That's where Harper's kryptonite would become clear- his anger would boil over and he would become the sulking player you saw in the first half of 2018 with the Nats.
There is a reason why the Yanks have added so many righty bats over the past several years and shed the lefties. The numbers against the shift in the Stadium just don't work.

In agree in the sense of not obsessing about LH bats.
I would point out that Harper tore down his approach a bit midway through last year (Kevin Long had some good quotes on it), stopped trying to pull and launch. Started using all fields and letting his more natural line drive swing-path play. The 2H spray figures/charts show the change, and the results that followed were absurdly good. High average, tons of SLG, same sky-high walk rate, K rate in the teens.
I personally think he'd be great in YS (as he would be anywhere).
Regardless, NYY signing Harper feels like a tail event probability-wise, IMO.

Paul is a very, very angry man. When you see those old man yells at cloud memes - this is who they had in mind.
The guy literally can't go two posts without calling people names and basically just acting like a complete asshole unprovoked.
I don't understand why people who have different opinions than
Paul aren't "true" Yankees fans. I started rooting for the Yankees in 1993 as a kid--that's over 25 years now. I'm not a real fan because I want Harper or Machado?

Who said they can't afford Machado at 7 for 175? Nobody. You know why? Because that was a bullshit report.
...no Harper; no Machado.
And for the same reason as when free agency began weeks and weeks ago.
The Yankees have a limit on how much they'll spend.
These two are way over that figure.

Bingo. Signing either of the two Machado or Harper would put that at the highest threshold of the luxury tax which isn't going happen.
