Fletcher Cox and the draft

Hilary : 1/17/2019 4:17 pm
I see Fletcher Cox as the most difficult player the Giants face to defend(or protect against). There seems to be an emphasis on edge rushers and offensive tackles. Other than QB I think the giants need to focus on building the team from the inside to the outside. The shortest distance to the QB is between the guards. The shortest distance for a first down is between the guards.I would like to see a dominant defensive tackle (like Wilks or Simmons) in the first round and a bulldozer for right guard in the second. If they go QB in the first round I would like to use our picks and free agents to really improve the right guard spot and the middle of the defense.
Except if the Giants are punting..

That Makes Too Much Sense

You'll upset the rest of the board.
I'd like to see a draft
Pep22 : 1/17/2019 4:27 pm : link
that looks like this:

1 Dwayne Haskins, QB, Ohio State
2 Chris Lidstrom, OG, Boston College
3 no pick
4a Oshane Ximines, DE/OLB, Old Dominion
4b Chase Claypool, WR, Notre Dame
4c Rock Ya-Sin, CB/FS, Temple
That's not the way drafting works

Ximines is projected to go late first or early 2nd round.
LOL..
FatMan in Charlotte : 1/17/2019 5:00 pm : link
so what do you do when Fletcher Cox leaves the division and a different threat emerges. Do we have to change the draft to the new threat? And so on.

This is really some mind-numbing shit

LOL
So with the 6th overall pick, we take the best DT available
Mike from Ohio : 1/17/2019 5:38 pm : link
even if he is the 22nd best player on the board? Would that really be preferable to an edge rusher who is perhaps the 5th best player on your board?

And in the 2nd round, we take the best road grading RT on the board, even if he has a 3rd round grade? All of this because the shortest distance between two points is a straight line, or because Fletcher Cox is a good player (except on special teams)?

There are going to be a lot of choices there. All good. I think free agency might be a determining factor whether we go OL or DL first, but we need a lot of help on defense.

I think Simmons will be a player talked about a lot more as time goes on.

These players are in the top 10-15 on most of the draft sites such as GBN and CBS. Simmons is in the top 10 in both
You aren’t wrong...
trueblueinpw : 1/17/2019 7:30 pm : link
During a Chefs game this year one of the commentators was saying that Big Red thinks the same thing. Interior defensive linemen that can rush the passer are, according to Reid, perhaps more valuable now because they have a shorter path to the QB and offensive lines are built to stop the rush coming off the edge. Cox is beast and a game changing play maker. You could tell when he wasn’t on the field in that Saints game how much of a difference one player can make. So, when everyone says we need an edge rusher, that’s kind of true, because we dont get pressure on the ah but also not the whole story because a beast like Cox on the inside, or AD, can also get to the QB and disrupt the pass and shut down the run inside.
I'm OK either way
aka dbrny : 1/17/2019 7:48 pm : link
I'm OK with the dominant, disruptive, two-way (run/rush) threat being on the inside...or the outside. I just want a dominant, disruptive, two way threat. I would be equally happy with a dominant disruptive three-way (run/rush/cover) LB threat that could cover a tight end.

Exactly. DG is going to stick to his board.

I am just not sure quite yet if he is someone who will move up by over-paying if he "loves" someone like say a Haskins. It is a tough, tough decision because if you miss (or he is just average on his best day) you set the organization back a lot. It was bold to pass on Donaldson last year for Barkley but my gut now tells me that Barkley will be so good the next 4 years that no one is going to really blame them. Donaldson will be a solid NFL player but I sense he'll be one to throw pics more than you'd like. Just saying...
Get another 3-4
ryanmkeane : 1/17/2019 8:50 pm : link
starters in this draft and hope 1-2 become pro bowlers. Think that’s what we got in 2018 and let’s hope it continues in 2019.

If we pass on Haskins they better be damn sure he doesn’t have the goods, because the lack of future QB plan is getting tiresome.
It's not really wrong.....

Oh by all means, Giants should have drafted Sam Donaldson if they thought he could be stolen away from the Night,y News.

Yup, they have too many needs to reach for a certain position. Typically you would say you can reach for a QB to some extent, but it doesn’t seem like any of these guys are a sure thing if that even exists.
the giants need impact players. SB is an impact player. they are rare
plato : 1/18/2019 12:26 am : link
but when you se one you draft him. most of these in this draft seem on the LOS, good that’s where we need them.
i’m not sure the lb from ohio state is the nextLT, so maybe if he falls to second round.
long way to go to combine anyway
Everything in the OP sounds good
Jimmy Googs : 1/18/2019 7:15 am : link
other than the idea that a draft strategy should be so acutely defined...
The problem with this is we have no RT
BillT : 1/18/2019 9:04 am : link
They must have a professional RT to even hope to be competitive next year and FA is the only way to get one. Yes, they need a RG as well and so they must either draft one high like last year or get one, like an older stopgap, as a FA as well as draft a young RG to develop.

The goal is to build a championship roster, not burn high picks to get the best of an individual matchup vs a division rival.

Ignore the Fletcher Cox tidbit. Having a dominant DL in our division would not be bad no matter where Fletcher Cox plays.

I’m all for upgrading the OL, but pass rushers are more difficult to find and the Giants are in a nice spot to snag one or two.
