NFT: Where have you gone Joe DiMaggio? {Music thread)

Jints in Carolina : 1/29/2019 7:51 am
So I am sitting in my favorite local coffee shop getting some work done and 'Mrs. Robinson' plays....What a fantastic song to a classic all time movie.

It got me thinking....what other songs do you enjoy from classic movies?

I can't listen to 'Son of a Preacher Man' without thinking about Pulp Fiction.

Not a movie not as old or classic as the songs mentioned
pjcas18 : 1/29/2019 9:13 am : link
but I can no longer hear Journey - Don't Stop Believin' without thinking of the Sopranos.

and I never think of that song the same way. I always thought it was a decent song, maybe symbolic of the 80's but now it's iconic (to me at least).
RE: Green Onions by Booker T an the MGs.

...Live and Let Die (McCartney and Wings)
Skyfall (Adele)
Nobody Does it Better (Carly Simon)
Tomorrow Never Dies (Sheryl Crow)
Writings on the Wall (Sam Smith)
Goldfinger (Shirley Bassey)

Every time I hear the Piano Coda to Clapton's 'Layla', I think of GoodFellas.

...the Film 'A Walk on the Moon' with Vigo Mortensen and Diane Lane has a fantastic soundtrack, most notably, Judy Collins wonderful cover of Sandy Denny's 'Who Knows Where the Time Goes?' - I'm not one to buy soundtrack albums, but do own that one.

Too often, soundtracks are overdone, movies wind up like a lame, overblown music video - like "Dazed and Confused", a film that had it's moments, but IMO, was watered down with classic rock overkill. It's new scene! New song!!!

Great movie.

also Johnny B. Goode from BTTF, although that one rocks in any context.

"In Your Eyes", Peter Gabriel. Say Anything.

Funny thing is, The Smithereens were commissioned to write the song that would be used in that scene, but it was deemed too literal.

So, great Smithereens cut "A Girl Like You", wasn't used in the movie, but lyrically IS the movie. The line "I'll Say Anything" is actually highlighted in the song.

good call, never heard that story before either, In your Eyes (because that's how we've seen it maybe) is the perfect song for that scene.

Simon
giantfan2000 : 1/30/2019 9:10 am : link
just read recent Paul Simon biography.... interesting read ... Simon sat down with the author for interviews which always makes for a much better biography

Mike Nichols was listening to Simon and Garfunkel during the making of Graduate and went to them about adding songs for the move
Simon has a half finished song called "Mrs Roosevelt" when Nichols heard it he immediately wanted for the film .. when Simon said .. this doesn't make any sense for this movie Nichols said just change the name to Mrs Robinson and it works perfectly .
