Stolle Post Bulletin: Duane Benson, NFL player and legislator, dies

“His football career was long by NFL standards. Drafted by the Oakland Raiders, Benson was a linebacker during a nine-year career in the NFL and has the distinction of making the first tackle in Super Bowl II in 1968, on the kickoff.

“I was awed by it,” Benson told the Post-Bulletin about his experience playing in the Super Bowl. “Of course, I was awed by the notion of just getting to play in the NFL.”

Giants Birthdays 1-31

Bill Kimber E/DE UDFA-FSU 1959 NYG 1959-1960 1-31-1936

Kimber was on and off the Giants roster for two seasons. After being waived in 1959 to make room for DT Art Hauser, he signed with the LA Chargers of the new AFL. Fleer even issued a football card with him as a Charger.
He was released then re-signed by the Giants.

Giants Place Katcavage, Gifford On Injured List NEW YORK (AP)-“The New York Giants of the National Football League yesterday placed halfback Frank Gifford and defensive end Jim Katcavage on the injured reserve list and reactivated offensive end Bill Kimber and offensive guaro Bill Crawford. the action requires both Gifford and Katcavage to miss the last. four games of the regular season. Both were announced as out for the season last Monday, Gifford after suffering a deep concussion and Katcavage a broken collarbone in the Giants' 17-0 loss to Philadelphia last Sunday. Gifford, however, had said he hoped to be ready again in time for the Giants' final game, against Cleveland, Dec. 18. Kimber, former Florida State star, has been on the inactive list since halfback Alex Webster was reinstated to the roster after recovering from a leg injury a month ago. Crawford, a rookie from British Columbia University in Canada, has been on the club's taxi squad all season. The Giants went through a long workout at Yankee Stadium yesterday in preparation for Sunday's return battle with the Eagles v at Philadelphia. Injured quarterback Charley Conerly tested his ailing knee again and still could not pivot properly on hand-offs. Coach Jim Lee Howell said there was a chance the 39-year-old quarterback could play some against the Eagles. George Shaw will start at quarterback with Joe Morrison moving to left half in Gifford's place and Alex Webster starting at Morrison's right half post, Howell said.”

In 1960 the first of what world be two back to back losses to the eventual champion Eagles would leave the Giants battered and broken.

Two weeks later after the second loss to the Eagles the Giants took on the winless expansion Cowboys. Kimber have the Giants a good early start:

“New York, coached by Jim Lee Howell, had won the Eastern Conference the previous two years, but the aging and injury-riddled club was 5-3-1 and coming off of back-to-back losses to the Philadelphia Eagles that had assured they would not finish first a third time. 39-year-old QB Charlie Conerly was one of the injured players, and backup George Shaw was behind center against the Cowboys. HB Alex Webster was also out, as was star HB Frank Gifford, who had been finished for the year – and the whole next season – after a noteworthy tackle by LB Chuck Bednarik in the first loss to Philadelphia.

There were 55,033 fans at Yankee Stadium, the smallest home crowd of the year for the Giants on a sunny afternoon. New York scored quickly on its first possession, taking just four plays with Shaw completing a 41-yard pass to end Bill Kimber and then throwing 10 yards to FB Mel Triplett for the touchdown. HB Joe Morrison followed up with a one-yard scoring plunge and the Giants had a 14-0 lead...”

However Dallas rallied:

“However, before the first quarter was over, HB L.G. Dupre (pictured at left) ran in for a five-yard TD to get the Cowboys on the board. Still, Shaw extended New York’s margin in the second quarter as he connected with end Kyle Rote on a 28-yard scoring play.

Dallas continued to fight back. LeBaron, who nearly sat the game out with a rib injury, tossed a pass to Dupre for a 21-yard TD and Fred Cone kicked an 11-yard field goal to narrow the score to 21-17 at halftime.

Pat Summerall posted the only points of the third quarter with a 26-yard field goal that gave the Giants a seven-point lead. The Cowboys knotted things up in the fourth quarter thanks to a 56-yard drive capped by LeBaron throwing again to Dupre for a 23-yard touchdown, followed by Cone’s extra point.

First-year backup QB Lee Grosscup put the Giants back ahead 5:45 into the final period with a 26-yard touchdown pass to end Bob Schnelker. With five minutes to go, Dallas DT Bill Herchman recovered a fumble by Morrison. LeBaron passed to Doran for 32 yards to the New York nine and two plays later connected with Howton for an 11-yard TD. Cone kicked the tying extra point, and that was it. The game ended in a 31-31 draw, the first non-losing game in Dallas franchise history...”

Kimber would return to the AFL, this time to play the the Patriots in 1961..

I don’t agree with this from Colin at all:
The_Boss : 1/31/2019 8:18 am : link
“Interestingly, the sense one gets talking to NFL people is that Haskins would actually have been the first player off the board at the 2018 draft had been eligible this past spring. At the same time, though, there is also a sense that Haskins would only have been the 4th or 5th rated passer in the loaded 2020 draft if he had stayed in school for his junior campaign next fall.”

In my opinion, the 2018 QB class was better than the projected 2020 class. I don’t think Haskins is a better talent/prospect than Mayfield, Darnold, Rosen, or Allen, as this quote suggests (and I’ve seen plenty of media opinions agreeing). On the flip side, if he decided to wait until 2020, I think Haskins would probably be QB#3 at the very worst.

I agree with you. There is always the natural obsession with “potential”. The fact is last years class has been overly dissected. Plus we have seen some of their deficiencies because they have played in the NFL for a year now and we have seen them take there lumps. Next years class hasn’t been dissected at all. It is easier to make the assumption that they will be great, but my gut tells me a lot will change between now and next years draft. Haskins would likely fall in the middle of both groups, however until the combine we still won’t really know.
