NFT: Is Heartbreak Ridge a war drama or comedy?

Bobby Humphrey's Earpad : 1/31/2019 8:30 am
Because the lines are just killer.

"These retards couldn't fight their way out of a shithouse."
"That where you been keeping yourself lately?"

"You shouldn't litter Faggety, it's ecologically unsound."

"Gunny, I'd like you to meet my big friend Swede Johansson. Swede, say something nice to the man."
"I'm going to rip your head of and shit down your neck."

List goes on.
Does it really

matter? Sometimes movies are just meant to entertain for a couple hours

Funny seen with the LT making a collect call to Camp Lejeune for help when they were pinned down in the chapel is based on a true incident in the Grenada battle.
It's

awesome.

who cares.
holy smokes

Couldn't understand how anyone could consider Hacksaw Ridge a comedy at first.

Now, Heartbreak Ridge I don't think is a flat out drama or comedy. Sort of like Full Metal Jacket. Hilarious for the boot camp portion, but kind of forgotten about after that. Half comedy, half drama/action.
You know, Gunny, I was the platoon leader of my ROTC class
Greg from LI : 1/31/2019 8:53 am : link
Well, I'll sleep much better at night knowing that, sir.

was a similar nerdy officer for a Marine recon platoon at Camp Legune.

Also that big dude who Highway takes down played football at Maryland and I think the NFL. He’s still a working actor but slimmed down considerably.
*Lejeune

Too bad. Your old lady does.

Try "U.S. Marine," shithead.

The list goes on...
It was BAD.

Why the need to embellish great stories? Heartbreak Ridge didn't need help. Just tell the fekkin story.

Apollo 13 would've been much better with a Ben Affleck/Liv Tyler love story in it, no?

Same thing with Titanic - all the drama and horror on that boat, we really needed Leonardo and Kate to make the story interesting? PUKE.

Swede Johanson was played by Peter Koch from Long Island (New Hyde Park). He also played football at Maryland and 5 years in the NFL.
It’s not my fucking fault

The fucking gun fucking fucked up

Probably my favorite line of any movie

Brock Lesnar would have been 9 years old in 1986. Holy shit, you're a moron.
They do look similar.
Pete in MD : 1/31/2019 8:54 pm : link
If Brock looked like that at 9 years old I would be pretty impressed.

The story was
Pete in MD : 2/1/2019 8:50 am : link
inspired by the one scene where they use a pay phone and credit card to call in an air strike, which is a true story. The invasion of Grenada was actually done by the US Army but they didn’t want to be attached to the movie for PR reasons (Highway’s character was a drinker, divorced, and used fowl language.) The Marine Corps agreed to be involved because they were going to use the movie to promote Toys for Tots but then they saw the final cut and decided otherwise. Eastwood must be a funny dude in-person because he always injects subtle humor in the movies he directs and none of them were supposed to be funny.
The invasion of Grenada wasn't just the army
Greg from LI : 2/1/2019 9:06 am : link
The Marines were part of the invasion force as well. What you're referring to is the rescue of the American medical students. In the film, Gunny Highway's platoon does that. In reality, it was elements of the 75th Ranger Regiment who rescued them.
You’re right,
Pete in MD : 2/1/2019 9:26 am : link
I wrote it incorrectly. A lot of the major scenes in the movie were the Army in reality (bulldozer, medical school, credit card air strike) but I didn’t mean to take away from the other military branches involved. It was more about the politics behind the making of Heartbreak Ridge.
The best line is when they play
pjcas18 : 2/1/2019 9:26 am : link
"match-up" in the pit to determine who gets weekend leave and the lieutenant says stitch jones cheated for grabbing the two guys by the balls..

Gunny Highway says "he improvised, he adapted, he overcame"

I use that line often with the kids I coach in hockey.

They'll come off the ice pissed off and say "coach, that kid used his/her hand and pulled the puck out of the crease" or "that kid is slashing me with their stick when I'm in front of the net" or something - it's always something and I say:

"hey, they improvised, they adapted, they overcame" and the kids look at me like WTF? and the other coaches laugh. but gradually some of the kids get it and while I'm not advocating doing anything unsportsmanlike I am advocating to get creative. And some kids do get it.

Improvise, adapt and overcome is an old Marine maxim
Greg from LI : 2/1/2019 9:29 am : link
Predates the movie. In a similar vein is one they didn't use: Semper Gumby, aka Always Flexible.
The film was no more comic than the events it portrayed
Vanzetti : 2/1/2019 9:50 am : link
They had to "rescue" American medical students who it turns out were not even there but instead vacationing in Mexico.
It's a rom-com
GiantJake : 2/1/2019 9:16 pm : link
about a divorced couple that finds their way back to each other.
