NFT: Friday Night Knicks: Celtics at MSG, Must-See TV!

Beezer : 2/1/2019 10:20 am
Don't mind taking the bus, don't mind taking the train,
Don't mind wearing walking shoes
or running through the rain.

Knicks on Friday night, MSG is the place to be,
Whatever it takes to make it here, I'll do it all again.

Hey, I gotta get there fast as I can,
I gotta get there, Friday night Knicks I'm a fan,
I gotta get there please understand,
I'm talking Friday night Knicks
on MSG ... gotta front row seat gotta get there!

+++

OK, so perfect timing, Celtics at Knicks (also on ESPN) tonight.

Kyrie in the house! Everything will be hyper-analyzed.

Will the expirings (Jordan/Matthews) get minutes? Will DSJ start? Will Kanter play?

+++

Intrigue! Get your popcorn!

Friday night Knicks!
With approaching 600 posts on yesteday's thread,
Beezer : 2/1/2019 10:26 am : link
thought I'd point us toward tonight.

Jeff Van Gundy said this morning that knowing the people involved (Knicks FO people, he means), and knowing that "no one follows the rules" (as in, everyone talks along back channels about what players/agents are doing/thinking), he thinks there is NO WAY the Knicks made this trade to send Porzingas away without some serious knowledge that they will be getting big names (ie, Durant/Irving).

Was good to hear. No idea if what Van Gundy says is valid. But it felt nice. lol

What Van Gundy said is common sense
Chris684 : 2/1/2019 10:27 am : link
despite the mass hysteria on the other thread.

Knicks upcoming draft picks:

2019: Top-4 overall pick + 2nd rd via ORL, CLE or HOU
2020: NYK 1st + CHA 2nd
2021: NYK 1st + DAL 1st (unprotected) + CHA 2nd
2022: NYK 1st + NYK 2nd
2023: NYK 1st + DAL 1st (protected 1-10) + NYK 2nd
JVG is obviously guessing

But it is certainly an educated guess given his NBA experience.

So much stuff from so many angles ... but one thing I heard - I believe it was last night - is that the stuff Kyrie is saying to the Celtics and in the media is NOT the same as what Kyrie is saying to friends and those in his "circle." Meaning, he's looking for options, and it's not quite the slam-dunk he stays in Boston as many might think.
Sort of related, but not exactly ...
Beezer : 2/1/2019 10:38 am : link
... couple night ago while doing highlights on MSG, Billy Pidto made the comment while doing the Celtics highlights that with Kyrie out of the lineup (that night), the ball moves MUCH better for Boston.

The article is right about one thing - your opinion of the deal hinges entirely on your opinion of the Knicks front office and their ability to actually land superstar free agents. If you think they can actually do that, it's a great deal. Since I don't think they could lure a mouse with a block of cheese, I think it's yet another Knick folly.

Time will tell.

This trade as a standalone really is tough to judge.

This particular iterations, specifically, of the Knicks decision-makers ... have they made a misstep yet? Hardaway, but they've fixed that.

I guess as fan, I have a need to stay optimistic. Maybe, MAYBE enough has changed internally that this breaks the right way for a change.

My dream right now is probably KD, Leonard, and Morant. If AD is possible then great as long as it doesn't deprive the team of all other talent. They can have some young kids and picks but we still need a supporting cast. That would be amazing.

there are more and more positive articles today, praising the Knick trade. Not only do they open up two max spots meaning a max guy can bring another max guy with him, but with seven first round picks over the next five years, this year's first likely to be a top 5, young, inexpensive young, potentially good players like Knox, Trier, Robinson, Smith Jr, Frank, they have a lot of trade capital.

Can they also trade for a max guy?

Things will be very very interesting on July 1st.

Has there been a Knick more hated on BBI in recent years?

We may see some Westchester guys tonight.
Every avenue toward building a contender is wide open to the Knicks.
bceagle05 : 2/1/2019 11:34 am : link
If they fail to do so, they have only themselves to blame. A ton of cap space in a year with several legit superstars with rings, surplus of draft picks, young players to be developed or used as trade chips - it's a blank canvas right now.

And what would you prefer them do instead?

I think we all know the answer is that you'd prefer they do exactly what they did so that you can complain about it. You'd think they personally pissed in your cheerios. Or worse (for you, anyway), went to Virginia Tech.

The next five months are basically like the time between when you buy a Mega Millions ticket and when the numbers are drawn. You can dream about all the things you'd do with the winnings, at least until you find out that you lost, which was the most likely scenario all along. Or, you can just immediately start thinking about the probability of losing in the first place as soon as you buy the ticket. As a fan, the team is buying that ticket on your behalf whether you like it or not - what's the benefit of choosing the doom and gloom outcome months before it actually happens?

Just strap on a fresh pair of big boy jorts and hope for the best. It doesn't cost you anything extra.

Can't believe I'm about to type this but Evan and Joe
Stu11 : 2/1/2019 2:45 pm : link
really had a great, thoughtful take on the trade. They are definitely pro the deal. Listen I tend to side with Greg from LI in that the Knicks couldn't lure a hooker into the Garden with a million dollars in their hand. However I also agree with Mook and others in that they are swinging for the fences here and as long as they don't waste the room on mediocrity they are still in good shape for a re-build even if they strike out with KD/Kyrie/Kahwi etc...Again that also means you have to have faith in an organization that has proved for decades they are a train wreck combined with an air disaster, with a splash of Titanic. I'm willing to give Perry the benefit of the doubt here. Unlike Walsh who was a great old school GM but totally out of touch with the modern players and the way it is played now, Perry is definitely more in touch with them. One has to have true faith that he can pull this off with free agents. I'll believe it when I see it but why not hope. Evan and Joe's main point was that even if they strike out this summer they are still in position to re-build with a ton of picks going forward. The 2 of them are the furthest thing you can get from Garden shills.

Do they have a ton of assets? Need to extend Rozier this summer and Brown next. Hayward is making a ton of money and looks like a shell of himself. This concept is sooo overblown. The clippers and kings making runs this year really hurt them, imo

That roster is much more than a playoff team -- that group minus Hayward essentially went to a conference championship.

If Kyrie bolts and that draws Thompson or KD away from GS, that opens up the path to a championship for lots of teams, including the Celtics.

GS is still king -- and the Bucks, Raptors, Cs, and 6ers aren't a threat for a ring until something chips away there.
