Sign Clowney?

mittenedman : 2/2/2019 6:29 pm
There was buzz from the Senior Bowl the Giants were cutting Olivier Vernon. JackRabbit is 31 years old - tough age for a CB. And Gettleman is quick with the axe & proactively cutting Reese holdovers.

Would anyone be opposed to the Giants replacing OV with Clowney? Turns 26 this month. He seems perfect for the Chandler Jones role. Move him around, scheme him to attack 1on1. He's a beast whenever I've watched the Texans play, which I admit is not often. 2 years ago - he was a wrecking ball heading into the Playoffs at a level you rarely see. Ruining games. His stats aren't otherwordly but he also plays on a stacked D with Watt & Mercilus among others. I really don't see a lazy guy on the field - I see an athlete that hustles and intimidates people.

It would be an aggressive move but the Giants are desperate for a pass rush, especially without Vernon.

Plus, if you sign Clowney it really opens up that #6 pick. Could go Greedy Williams to replace Jenkins, QB, Jonah Williams or keep stacking the pass rush with Ed Oliver or Ferrell.
OV needs to go unless

He re does his contract. He’s unreliable health wise first ad foremost. Meh when healthy. Rather give Carter his snaps at this point
It would be nice but we know the Giants aren’t going to do it

I'd be really excited
SamdaGiantsFan : 2/2/2019 6:52 pm : link
but why would the Texans let him go? ... they'll probably franchise him ... here's a tweet from Ian Rappaport, albeit a bit dated, but saying that they'll probably franchise him if they can't agree to a long-term deal
RapSheet on Clowney - ( New Window )

Did I miss something?

Where was this chatter about the Giants releasing OV during the senior bowl?

Exactly, too many holes to fill to break the bank on one or two guys.
I was thinking about signing Clowney
Rjanyg : 2/2/2019 9:07 pm : link
But you would have to assume Houston is not re-signing him and that Gettlemen want to replace one expensive pass rusher with another.

Maybe Dee Ford it Frank Clark would be less expensive and better fits?

We need a right tackle as well, as well as a free safety.

Tag Collins. Re-sign Jamon Brown.

Sign Daryl Williams from Carolina.

Cut Vernon. Sign Frank Clark

Sign Honey Badger

Go into the draft, get your young QB for the future.

He will be insanely expensive and his pass rushing abilities never really developed.

Would he be paid the federal minimum wage or the NJ minimum wage?

Lol

Yeah, Clowney will probably get north of $15 million a year, but why not ?DG isn’t getting any younger
Clowney is going to get

a monster contract. If it's with the Giants you guys will be calling him overpaid by October.
Clowney=Pipe Dream

He will cost way too much, if Houston lets him go.
Worst yet

Look for him to land on the Cowboys. They have $55M in available cap, most of their players are signed, and they have no 1st round pick.
Houston has like 65 mil in cap space

Clowney has a lot of

potential....unfortunately, it doesn't always show up on the field....and when I watch him play, he seems to be protecting his knees, which limits him....
Clooney is a great talent...

But he’s too unreliable for my blood. JC has played a full season one time in five seasons, averaging about six sacks per seasons.

Potential huge cap killer...

I would completely stay out of high priced FA shopping. I’d focus on a solid draft & making smart/cost effective signings to fill holes when the opportunity arises.

have to sign Prescott, Lawrence, and Cooper to very large contracts.

That won't leave much.

I would ONLY spend big bucks (IF AT ALL) on a YOUNG OL with talent at this point. If none worth the market, spend on second tier FAs to fill in and are versatile
Not worth the money imo

Agreed, but Pro Bowls mean squat. All-Pro is a different story

Not that it matters - but 3.

There's alot of misconceptions about Clowney because he was a bust his first 2 seasons. Didn't immediately live up to the hype. Got hurt in his first NFL game and spent 2 years trying to get back.

But not only is this guy an excellent pass rusher - he's also a legit 2-way DE. Elite against the run. 51 TFL since 2016 is 3rd most in the NFL and leads the NFL in run stuffs (31.5) during that span.

--------

In terms of Houston keeping him - yes, they want to. But they also have J.J. Watt, Whitney Mercilus and want to bring back Honey Badger too. If they do franchise Clowney, that opens up Mathieu as a consolation prize.

Then the question becomes would you rather have Collins or Mathieu at SS?
No doubt he has tremendous upside
TMS : 2/3/2019 12:35 pm : link
always has had. But does he want to be as good as he can be. and loves the game? That has not been demonstrated consistently. Rather find our own guy in the draft with those qualities. Think DG has the ability to spot that kind of commitment with the talent to make it work. MO
For some reason
Big Rick in FL : 2/3/2019 12:59 pm : link
I think we sign him. No inside info or anything. Not sure why I feel this way just a gut feeling.
Think DG likes the hand he holds now
TMS : 2/3/2019 1:56 pm : link
in the but an ELI resturuct and cutting Jenkins, Vernon could give some room to bolster the DL snd the OL in FA. Think we find a spot for Collins (LB maybe).
