There was buzz from the Senior Bowl the Giants were cutting Olivier Vernon. JackRabbit is 31 years old - tough age for a CB. And Gettleman is quick with the axe & proactively cutting Reese holdovers.
Would anyone be opposed to the Giants replacing OV with Clowney? Turns 26 this month. He seems perfect for the Chandler Jones role. Move him around, scheme him to attack 1on1. He's a beast whenever I've watched the Texans play, which I admit is not often. 2 years ago - he was a wrecking ball heading into the Playoffs at a level you rarely see. Ruining games. His stats aren't otherwordly but he also plays on a stacked D with Watt & Mercilus among others. I really don't see a lazy guy on the field - I see an athlete that hustles and intimidates people.
It would be an aggressive move but the Giants are desperate for a pass rush, especially without Vernon.
Plus, if you sign Clowney it really opens up that #6 pick. Could go Greedy Williams to replace Jenkins, QB, Jonah Williams or keep stacking the pass rush with Ed Oliver or Ferrell.
RapSheet on Clowney - ( New Window )
Exactly, too many holes to fill to break the bank on one or two guys.
Maybe Dee Ford it Frank Clark would be less expensive and better fits?
We need a right tackle as well, as well as a free safety.
Tag Collins. Re-sign Jamon Brown.
Sign Daryl Williams from Carolina.
Cut Vernon. Sign Frank Clark
Sign Honey Badger
Go into the draft, get your young QB for the future.
Lol
Yeah, Clowney will probably get north of $15 million a year, but why not ?DG isn’t getting any younger
Potential huge cap killer...
Potential huge cap killer...
This
That won't leave much.
I would ONLY spend big bucks (IF AT ALL) on a YOUNG OL with talent at this point. If none worth the market, spend on second tier FAs to fill in and are versatile
Agreed, but Pro Bowls mean squat. All-Pro is a different story
There's alot of misconceptions about Clowney because he was a bust his first 2 seasons. Didn't immediately live up to the hype. Got hurt in his first NFL game and spent 2 years trying to get back.
But not only is this guy an excellent pass rusher - he's also a legit 2-way DE. Elite against the run. 51 TFL since 2016 is 3rd most in the NFL and leads the NFL in run stuffs (31.5) during that span.

In terms of Houston keeping him - yes, they want to. But they also have J.J. Watt, Whitney Mercilus and want to bring back Honey Badger too. If they do franchise Clowney, that opens up Mathieu as a consolation prize.
Then the question becomes would you rather have Collins or Mathieu at SS?
