Somehow I never knew he was Sean McVay's grandfather, until today.
Anyways, how is he viewed by some of our older fans?
I didn't start really following football until 1980, so all I know about him was being the head coach during the end of the dark times.
That's my one strong memory of that time. Literally my Dad smashed his radio when that happened. Pretty odd for a very mild mannered person.
Eagle phans call it that... Giants fans just call it "The Fumble"

Well the Fumble popularly refers to the Browns/Broncos playoff game fumble

Wait. Or was that John McKay??
He took over the team from Bill Arnsparger, another good coach who doesn't get his due from today's GIANTS fans. Arnsparger was one hell of a defensive coach. He took a dreadful defense and turned it into one of the very best in the entire NFL. Unfortunately he was one of those guys who just couldn't get it done on the other side of the football and was fired after compiling a poor record.
McVay succeeded him and built on the defensive foundation that Arnsparger left. Note that this was back when the GIANTS drafting, trading, and signing of free agents was still pretty suspect to say the least. They really never had anywhere near a top QB through this whole era, and the rest of the offense (and some of the defensive depth, too) was largely a bunch of cast-offs, never-wases, and over-the-hill guys.
Nevertheless, McVay got the GIANTS to the point of being one offensive holding penalty (on #65 OL John Turturo if I remember correctly) away from turning the team around with a huge opening day win over the heavily favored Redskins. Unfortunately that penalty was not overcome, cost the GIANTS the game, and pretty much killed the team's morale for the rest of the season.
McVay was eventually fired and went on to a very successful time as GM of the 49ers in the early part of their glory years.
In my eyes McVay was a better GIANTS HC coach who did more with less than several of those who succeeded him, specifically Handley, Reeves, and McAdoof, and arguably Fassell.
I think Seam McVay is going to be a HoF coach starting this year.

Uh, no. In his 2 full seasons coaching the team, they were ranked 23rd and 17th in the leauge (out of 26) in points allowed. 24th and 21st in yards allowed. A far cry from the very best in the NFL.
Also: they gave up 23.5ppg in the 7 games he coached in 1976. They gave up 12ppg after he was fired.

Wait. Or was that John McKay??
It was McKay, the Bucs inaugural coach
He kept the pedal to metal even though the game was essentially over in the beginning of third quarter.
Many thought McVay did this to get revenge for the way the Giants treated his Grandfather .
