Great Breakdown On How Goff Shit The Bed

Zeke's Alibi : 2/4/2019 3:34 pm
After watching the game yesterday I felt as if either McVay or Goff really blew the game yesterday, but wasn't really sure. We'll this pretty much breaks it down how bad Goff was yesterday. Personally I knew Belichik was going to make Goff beat him, and I thought he'd be up to the task after he was able to accomplish what he did in that insane environment in New Orleans. This is very damning. Hard to argue Goff didn't completely shit the bed.

I think there's always plays that are missed..
BillKo : 2/4/2019 3:53 pm : link
.....like on that one where Reynolds was wide open on a cross, Romo even said sometimes it's predetermined where the ball is going esp on a long pass. That was 2nd and 22 as I remember.

Goff didn't play well, but McVay never got his QB comfortable. In today's NFL, there are so many gimme throws....I didn't see any of those in the beginning. No running back screens either to slow down the rush.

And he didn't stick with the run game. QB struggling...give it to the back. Gotta read your QB.
I think the game yesterday really magnified the fact that
Zeke's Alibi : 2/4/2019 4:01 pm : link
Goff's success is more McVay than Goff. He was missing reads and not diagnosing blitzes all game long. They confused the hell out of him, but there were things available for him to take. Belichik is the GOAT, but he really exposed Goff for what he really is.
Yeh McVay shouldn't have abandoned the run game a

That's not how it works in these parts. Any chance to dump on a guy especially a QB is cherished. Goff could have a great career but unless/until he wins a couple of Super Bowls any thread on him will include at least a couple of posters gleefully trashing him for his performance in SB LIII.

^^This^^. While it might be on Goff for failing to make the correct pre-snap adjustments at the line it is beyond contention that the pressure up the middle was murderous.

To be fair, Eli got the shit kicked out of him in the 2011 nfc title game and still hung 24 pts on a great defense.

Eli was so fucking awesome that game. Most QBs shit the bed when pressured Eli was that night. Goff didnt even take that much pressure and he shit the bed. Eli was a God that night.

Right or wrong these QBs all get too much scrutiny in these big big games. They are going to be defined by these moments. At times I think these critiques are over the top of overstated and over analyzed but sometimes they are fair. Its just how it goes.

From what I've seen I don't think that the Rams have a bad offensive line.

I just think that they played very poorly yesterday. Whether that is on the coaches, Goff or the players themselves is another matter.

They just looked like shit.

And, to your point, Goff would have been hospitalized if he was playing behind the Giants line yesterday.
I agree with a comment above...

Belichick & Flores decided to make Goff beat them with his arm. And they were going to make him do that with various twists, stunts, and different numbers of rushers. It was an obvious, smart approach.

I personally think Goff had his bell rung a few times. There were four official sacks and three of them were very hard hits. Of the twelve other hits, well over half were also very good licks. The accumulation of those just throws off your timing and you lose trust in your protection. It's human nature.

And in the end, it is situations like this that really separate the greats from the average.
Thanks for sharing...

the nextgenstats gif's are really cool. I'd love it if they could somehow include these in the coaches tape for next year's GamePass. It's instructive to see the gif first, then watch the play live and would save a ton of time overall when watching.

I'm watching the coaches tape focusing on secondary first (because of the all-22 angle), then the line play from the end zone angle. Seeing the gif before watching either would help point out things I might want to focus on (like how a receiver really got open, or how a blitz pickup was missed).

Either way, the gif's are really cool.
I got a bit of a SB XXV vibe watching last nigh

Not to say that the Pats defense was anywhere near what the Ravens were, but how Goff and Collins both broke down without a good running game and a good OL performance.

arcarsenal : 2/4/2019 5:28 pm : link
That's the Belichick trademark. They're as good as anyone in the league at finding ways to make you beat them with a guy you're not used to leaning on as much.

Manningham came through for us - we had a 3rd option good enough to make key plays when teams were focused on keeping Nicks and Cruz from beating them. Goff didn't come through for them.

I didn't feel like he was really willing to hang tough in the pocket and Romo even alluded to it at one point saying that he was going to have to just stand tall in there even if it meant taking some big licks to get the ball down the field.

This is one part of Eli's game that every Giant fan should never forget - particularly during the 11-12 run. He was willing to stand tall back there and get his fucking ass kicked to win those football games. I didn't get the same sense from Goff last night. He looked like a California boy who would have rather been at the beach surfing.

He had Cooks wide open at a crucial juncture in the endzone and his throw was poor and late - allowing McCourty to get over just in time and jar it loose.

He was really bad. Bill dared Goff to beat them without Gurley and he laid an egg.

Goff is young - he'll learn from it. It's a big stage and the toughest task he's faced as a QB to date. But he was positively shitty last night and most certainly was the biggest culprit in the loss.

Wade did a fantastic job with the defense for the majority of the game. They did their job. The offense failed - mostly because Goff sucked.
They threw some exotic looks to confuse Goff in the passing game
Zeke's Alibi : 2/4/2019 5:34 pm : link
and he couldn't make the right reads. I thought that was the obvious conclusion of this article. I guess not.

Belichik said let's make Goff beat us and he couldn't. Goff didn't play well yesterday and was even given a chance to turn it around in the 4th quarter and almost did. But do you think Eli throws that frustration pick after Cook's failure to make a play. I somehow doubt it.

I think that's in part because they didn't play fast like they normally do. All year they snapped the ball within a few seconds of it being marked ready for play. The most in the league at doing that btw. Last night for whatever reason they stayed in the huddle for the first 15 seconds of the play clock.

Romo called it genius but I thought it was mind numbingly dumb. Why in the biggest game of the year do you go away from what you were successful at all year, and what got you to the SB?

That "genius" move got them three whole damn points on the night, and to me McVay outsmarted himself in trying to outsmart Belichick.

Goff's throw had nothing to do with Eli so unless you feel there is some reason to compare the two, not sure why the hypothetical view...

Zeke's Alibi : 2/4/2019 7:10 pm : link
Goff had a chance to do that and still couldn't get it done because of a mental emotional mistake he made. Some guys can get it done in big moments and some can't. This is Eli's M.O, I thought Goff could have been a guy like that, but that interception told me he let the moment get to him. That was a frustration interception.

Shows only that defensive backs, not just QBs, also have to pick their spots-- in this case, last one missed, when it's hard to see and when body contact is close anyway almost throughout the play.

That was a very rare performance in league history. Possibly unique. One thing that stood out to me rewatching it recently was Eli's mobility within the pocket, just 2,3 steps and find a passing lane. It was very, very good. Has he lost that? I guess so.

Probably, like many of us, one of our favorite Eli games. The guy was a stud.

To be fair to Eli this year, our OL was mind-numbingly bad in the first half of the year. Any metrics on both pass and run blocking had them last or near-last in every category in those first 8 games. Guess I am just saying, it helps to have a lane to step in to. :)

Two weeks ago in New Orleans, for example, Goff made some of the best throws of the year in a very difficult environment.

one game shouldnt define his career or future whatsoever. He sucked. It happens. Sucks for him it happened on the biggest stage, but it wont define unless he lets it.

Now the problem with Goff was he was a terrible, yes TERRIBLE, QB after the KC game. I am not sure if he got hurt, if other teams figured the offense out, Gurleys injury impacted him as well...

But in the last 8 games, he had 7 TDs/8 INTs - and 4 of those TDs coming in a meaningless last game of the year against SF.

WHAT POCKET??? THAT is what's wrong with this picture. Eli is still one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL when given a pocket and we haven't been able to count on that since our last Super Bowl run in 2011. The man's career has like two sides of a coin; first half with a very good offensive line and the second half of his career spent behind a long running joke that doesn't open any holes in the run game and continuously let's inside rushers disrupt the QB. I still remember that hit by Chris Baker. Eli has not been able to step up and throw comfortably in eight years.
