AAF - AmericanAssociation of Football

Begins play this Saturday. I guess I should have made this an NGT thread BUT Damontre Moore and Brad Wing are players! I may watch some of it. I'm sure it'll be a rough couple of weeks at first but so disappointed with NFL product, between officiating, rules (head hits whats a fumble etc) and just the political atmosphere in general there, I am more willing now than ever to see what else is out there.

Anyone else watching or even heard of it?
I'm going to watch a few SD

games. A former student of mine is on the team. Shakir Soto. Went to Pitt. Great kid. Rooting for him to get another shot. Had stints with Oakland and denver in the preseason.
It's actually "Alliance of American Football"

But I'm not optimistic
Some friends and I got together and put in some cash

Figured we’d make this league tolerable. Everybody throws in 30 bucks. Winner gets 200, 2nd gets 40. Anyhow, teams were drawn randomly. I got Birmingham Iron and the wife got San Diego Fleet.

Turns out the championship game is here in Vegas.
You have to figure it will be some NFL cast offs
Dinger : 2/5/2019 11:19 am : link
but hopefully its more USFL than XFL. If its like a minor league football league as opposed to trying to out 'NFL' the NFL I think it may catch on.

Thats the thing. Usually I wouldn't be, but I'm rooting for them to succeed.

It would seem the NFL is viewing it as exactly that. They've got the big part out of the way, they have CBS to broadcast the games, and they have the backing of the NFL Network as well.

If we all face the fact that college football (particularly the top programs) are essentially the minor leagues for the NFL, this is the next best thing for guys who just missed the cut or were left behind for whatever reason and want another shot.

And I'm sure the NFL is happy to have this under their wing to get it in flight before the XFL comes back to life. I don't know if there is enough talent to support all these other leagues, and if anything it will probably pull players away from the Canadian Football League.
That one receiver we had in camp is on a roster

So I've been following. Hope it does well I like that they want to be a feeder for the NFL and not directly competing but always about money. If they were able to partner with the NFL then could see it working.
It, obviously, will fail.

But I will check it out just to see whether it's spectacularly awful or merely awful.
No team in the NorthEast?

Lots of interesting Head Coaches: Steve Spurrier, Rick Neuheisel, Mike Martz, Mike Singletary to name a few.

is supposed to be a feeder league to the NFL. So, the rules will be basically the NFL rules. The officials will be guys hoping to be NFL officials. I don't see where this is going any different than the NFL except with "minor league" talent.
Tell me
Fast Eddie : 2/5/2019 12:18 pm : link
They will be using the same rule book used by the NFL and its a non starter for me. Yuck x 2
ESPN says

"The final regular-season weekend will be April 12-14, with playoffs to follow. The league's championship game will be played the weekend of April 26-28."

Guess what the championship game coincides with? Yup, the NFL draft!

looks like good ole Adrien Robinson is starting for the Express.

also looks like Zac Stacy is their starting RB? Wow he looked like a stud his rookie year with the Rams, can't believe how far he fell.

I heard an interview with an exec last week
Matt M. : 2/5/2019 2:00 pm : link
I don't know if there is NFL financial backing, but they may be at least loosely involved. This is being viewed somewhat as a minor leagues.

It was a funny interview, though. He was asked about the level of players and play. He said he would be happy just to see a completed pass on the first drive. Everything else, he felt would eventually fall into place.

playing games in the winter and higher costs probably have a lot to do with that
Im willing to give this a shot
John In CO : 2/5/2019 3:01 pm : link
Bottom Line.....its football. Im one of those who hates the dead period btwn the Super Bowl and the draft, and this will be.....something. There are a lot of recognizable names on the rosters. And as a college fan, the rosters seem to be territorial, so for example if you are from FL, check out the Orlando team. A ton of ex UCF, UF, FSU, etc....

The only thing that I wish is that, similar to the World League, teams were able to allocate players to rosters. I for one would love to see someone like Lauletta have the opportunity to play in actual games vs sitting on the bench and getting in a few preseason games.
