Chad Wheeler

jintman : 2/6/2019 11:14 am
Anyone think Chad wheeler has a chance to be our starting Right Tackle next year. Thought he improved from first year to next. It will be his third year, takes time for offensive lineman.
God I hope not

As a Backup YES, as a Starter NO

Even as a backup, I still would like the Giants to bring in competition to challenge him for a roster spot.
While I agree that he improved
gmen9892 : 2/6/2019 11:48 am : link
He only improved enough to still be a well-below average starting Right Tackle. He is consistently being bullied around by more powerful DEs and is getting beat by speed rushers. He would be great as a swing-tackle in case of injury, but he NEEDS to be upgraded as a starter.

arcarsenal : 2/6/2019 11:51 am : link
No. He's not strong enough - he gets driven backwards with regularity and can't handle bull rushes. As a backup/depth - no problem with keeping him here and hoping he keeps developing, but Gettleman cannot let Wheeler be the starting RT in 2019. Just can't happen.

Exactly!

I was looking through a list of FA OL last night
BlueLou'sBack : 2/6/2019 12:28 pm : link
and comparing PFF grades among them, while also looking at the PFF grades of the Giants' OL that should be upgraded.

I'm giving approximate grades, not going to look it up again now.

The Giants' starting OL:
Solder 75 above average
Hernandez 66 above average
Pulley 55 average
Brown 50 below average
Wheeler 45 below average

Gettleman said something about Halapio being the Giants' best OL before he went down, so if Pulley graded out as average they may not be looking for an upgrade at OC, although two legit upgrades are available: Paradis and Morse.

They almost certainly are looking for upgrades or at least competition for Brown and Wheeler's starting slot. IE, the right side, like they retooled the left side last year, and prolly with one vet FA and one rookie.

Wheeler definitely needs to be replaced and upgraded as a starter. O guess he can still get stronger and that will help him, but looking at his draft evaluations he's likely a guy that simply doesn't have the tools to be an above average NFL OL.

Besides the obvious FA possibilities like Daryl Williams or Juwan James, there are some high round picks who flopped out there that might be available on shorter, cheaper, prove it type deals.

Specifically I'm referring to Jake Fisher of Cincinnati. Former 2nd round OLT prospect out of Oregon, reasonably long athletic guy (30" vertical jump, good 40 and 20ss #s), he's graded out in the same range as Pulley and Jamon Brown last year at PFF. Slim pickingss, but he may have untapped upside especially on the right. His arms were 33.75, a bit short for a true OLT.

I have a strong feeling the Giants will cluster draft OL that have promise in the 4-5th rounds this coming draft. They may even grab one in rounds 1 & 2, but those slots look to have more value on the defensive side of the ball.

Shurmur mentioned Halapio by name after the season as well - I think they like him. A lot of people dismissed him and said he was terrible when I brought him up yesterday, but the Giants seem to feel otherwise.

His injury was pretty nasty, though. I'm not sure when he'll be 100% - but if he can get back onto the field without any ill effects, he could be a solid depth option at least.

I think the focus has to be entirely on the right side.

Brown seemed to do alright, but I think part of that was just that Omameh was so bad - he almost looked better than he was by comparison.

If we can get viable starters @ RT/RG this offseason, I think the OL is actually looking at being solid and won't wreck another season.
One thing to think about
Rjanyg : 2/6/2019 12:58 pm : link
Wheeler was undrafted. The Giants signed him as a priority free agent when Reese was GM. Gettlemen thought enough of him to be the back up plan to Flowers.

He is a pretty good athlete, has the long arms you want, but he is a swing tackle at best and IMO is probably a better LT than RT.

As for Hilapio, Shurmur and DG seem to really like him. Lets not forget that Shurmur was a center in college. You would think he would be critical of the position.

Jamon Brown was pretty good last year but like the entire line, had some bad plays. He seemed like a good fit personality wise and we know that the culture issue is just as important with DG and PS. I hope Brown could be brought back on a reasonable deal. He is young an a 2-3 year deal should be doable.

The Right Tackle position is the biggest question mark on offense other than future QB. Daryl Williams seems to be a logical target for Gettlemen.

The Giants have 11 picks right now. A Center, Guard and Tackle could be added in rounds 4-7
There is no way Wheeler can be their plan for RT
BillT : 2/6/2019 1:02 pm : link
That's insane. He was terrible last year. He's the #1 player to upgrade on the entire team.
He's a natural left tackle.
Rico : 2/6/2019 1:08 pm : link
So he was learning a new position during the course of last season. He has good feet, bend, athletic ability, and supposedly a drive to excel. If he can bulk up a bit and continue to improve at his new position, he could be a solid player for us and maybe a starter.
Iíd like to see Wheeler as the backup/swing T
Chris684 : 2/6/2019 1:15 pm : link
I think heís shown some improvement and a willingness to work and compete.

I expect he has an inside track for that role and Iím hoping he takes it in camp.

Agreed.
Zero chance he starts

Wheeler, at best, will be the swing tackle. Thatís his ceiling.
Does anyone even know

if Daryl Williams is healthy? He had a pretty bad injury.

Another question: do you see Gettleman sinking another big contract into an OL free agent? The more I think about it, I don't see it. I think they go bottom fishing again for a guy with upside, but don't land an FA like William or James who are going to cost $$$. (If Williams' health checks out.)

You stole the thought right out of my brain!

As for Halapio, I don't get the DG and PS love...
He's not strong at the point of attack, his hand technique is meh, he didn't seem to consistently get to the 2nd level when he was required to do so (i.e. he often got caught up in the double team and not slide off to get the LB), consistently through the preseason and in the 2 games he played there seemed to be either confusion over the line calls or just plain bad calls.

It's like they are looking at a completely different player than the one you see out there on tape...

If you want to see awesome center play, go back to the 2000 season and watch Dusty Ziegler. In my opinion, he was the best center in the league that year, and he is what made the Giants line so effective. Too bad he needed microfacture surgery and was never able to come back.
What games are people watching

Best man wins... the issue is we need competition!
He was better than Flowers.
since1925 : 2/6/2019 5:01 pm : link
But that is not enough, we need a capable RT.
Wheeler as terrible ..
Bluesbreaker : 2/6/2019 5:02 pm : link
No way will he be a starter on this team next season .
Halapio who suffered a serious injury although he was playing
well is a bit of an overachiever as well . I hope he comes
back healthy and ready but I would prefer they take
a veteran or use a pick to get an anchor at center .
The middle of the line was useless . Unable to get movement
or open holes . guys like Fletcher Cox Woods Collins from Dallas were in our backfield .we get zero push in the middle
So between the draft and Free Agency I expect three new
starters .

That's a lot of analysis and surety based on essentially 5-6 quarters of football which is all he's played at OC @ the pro level.

I'm guessing they saw things they liked in practice and camp. I wouldn't put much stock into a tiny sample size of him playing sandwiched between a rookie in his very first NFL action and a guy who was so bad that we had to get rid of him in the middle of the year despite giving him a multi year deal just ~6 months earlier (Omameh)

I have no idea how we'll he'll recover from his injury or if he can get physically back to where he was before - but I'd be willing to at least give him more of a look before making any sort of real judgement on him playing in the middle.

Pulley was horrendous the first couple of games he played. He got a bit better later in the year and was at least passable.

If an upgrade is out there, I'm all for it. But, I would feel better prioritizing RT/RG first if possible. I think we'd be able to get by with Pulley/Pio if we had to.
They need to improve 2 out of 3 positions from C to RT
SLIM_ : 2/6/2019 6:44 pm : link
I think they are counting on Halapio as 1 and he could play C or RG but you do have to have some concerns about his comeback from injury.

I also think that the upgrades need to be in place before the draft with the potential that they try to grab another upgrade in the draft.

Is it conceivable that they sign a veteran who can play G-T and leave Halapio at center with the intention of drafting someone fairly high to play the other position? Possibly. In that case, it is conceivable that they have Wheeler fight it out with that pick and he loses to Wheeler based on his experience.

Unlikley but conceivable. We are a bad team still. By the end of the year, we had a functional offense and a bad defense. FS and edge rushers are the top priorities with OL being a close 3rd to compete for this year. We still need a QB so it is conceivable.

We need to have a strong middle on O.
