NFT: Knicks Chat: Durant has had enough

DanMetroMan : 2/7/2019 7:31 am
Deapite the headline...1. Doesn't at all deny interest in the Knicks so the headline is misleading 2. He's not wrong but this would not play in NY. The pitchforks would be out with the way the Knicks are covered. I like KD and always have but I do think he's handling this poorly.

Durant clearly wouldn't be able to handle the NY media god forbid they lose 2 in a row.

Frank Isola is somewhere smiling looking at his potential prey.

He really needs to learn to say the bare minimum like Eli. I mean as great as Durant is (and he is) he's the megastar with this "sensitive" reputation. Lebron is his own "thing" but guys like Westbrook, AD etc don't get it like this. I'm not even putting this on him but he has to proactively change the narrative. What's the old saying.. never argue with a man who buys ink by the barrel?
Lastbyear he did not have to deal with it

without talking to the media then get annoyed when the flood you with the free agency questions they have wanted to ask for the last week. I think your right, he should just watch video of Eli interviews, lol.

And also maybe sign a deal thats not for one year if you dont want to constantly be asked FA stuff.
all he is asking/saying is to stay focused on basketball
Peter from NH (formerly CT) : 2/7/2019 8:13 am : link

there is nothing wrong with it...

I don't think he was even being disrespectful. He just said "I didn't have anything to do with the trade. I don't know anything about the Knicks. I don't want to talk about it. I want to play basketball."

I don't think he handled that poorly. He wasn't shouting. He was obviously annoyed, but he didn't say anything disrespectful. He seemed more tired of answering the same stuff rather than he had soft skin or whatever.
the problem for kd

The whole "NY media monster" thing is overblown
Stu11 : 2/7/2019 8:55 am : link
especially for the players. With all the national competition and the demise of the print media you don't have as many shit stirrers like Dick Young, Bob Klapisch etc...around any more. Sure Isola pulls his woe is me whiny boy blast the garden routine but he doesn't get near the players any more any way. Durant would be fine here. The media can give coaches hard times in pressers, but even when they handle it the wrong way it dissipates much quicker these days. As long as the team wins games consistently nobody gives a crap, and if Durant comes here with another superstar that will take care of itself. Was Mcadoo having fights with the media weekly when we were 11-5?

I posted this in another thread - but it's probably better here.

I'm not sure Durant can handle NY and being THE guy. I have serious reservations about how he handles adversity because it seems to be not well at all.

He won't have guys like Harden, Russ, Steph or Draymond to pass the buck off to when things get rough here. If he comes here, even WITH Kyrie, he is going to be the no-doubt Alpha dog here and the guy expected to carry the Knicks.

I don't like the media either - but they're relentless here and when there's blood in the water, forget it. How is Durant going to respond when times get rough? I have serious pause.
He'd get along real well with Isola

i will say it again, he did not go off because of the line of questioning...

He went off on 1 specific writer who put words in kds mouth and spun it and acted like he talked to kd...

This had nothing to do with getting criticized, a month earlier he sat there and talked free agency with the knicks writers..
.
arcarsenal : 2/7/2019 11:04 am : link
Yeah, but he also had that whole rift with Draymond earlier in the year and all of that drama where he was like "I'm out of here" or whatever he was all bent out of shape about.

Even the biggest KD fan has to admit that the Knicks would be a unique situation for him. This would be the largest market he's played in, and he'd have to carry more weight here than he's ever carried before (barring the very beginning of his career)

He just doesn't seem like a guy who handles adversity well to me.

When OKC lost to GSW a couple years ago after being up 3-1, Durant seemed to vanish when the moment was biggest.

Westbrook's lightning-rod persona took a lot of heat off him. And in Golden State, there is no adversity. All they've done since hes been there is win and they were an established winner before he arrived - not a franchise that has been in peril for decades and desperately seeking a savior

This is going to be a MUCH different animal for him.

I actually agree with Durant here. Strauss put words in his mouth and clearly has no relationship with him. And what do you want him to say? He’s screwed either way. Look what’s happening to Irving.

I think his plan is to go to the Knicks if things line up right. I also think that plan can change very quickly.

of off-topic but given the new Forbes report the Knicks are worth 4 billion... the valuation is so high it almost has to be a corporation that would buy the Knicks, Rangers, MSG and Radio City... I have concerns a corporation would be less free with their checkbook than Dolan. How many private citizens have 10ish billion to spend?

Doubledeuce22 : 2/7/2019 12:58 pm : link
but how much better would Klay/Durant be in terms of fitting in with our current roster? I had read somewhere that we would be able to still fit in Deandre Jordan for around $9.5 million. Is that true with the 2 max contracts?

DSJ/Frank/Mudiay
Klay/Trier/Dotson
Durant/Knox/?
Zion?/Kornet
Deandre/Robinson
Regarding Klay, the Knicks desperately need shooting.
bceagle05 : 2/7/2019 1:02 pm : link
Robinson/Jordan only score at the rim, Knox is shooting 37% (I know, rookie, but still...), DSJr./Frank are poor from three, Zion and the rest of the top prospects are more slasher/scorer types than pure shooters. Shooting can definitely be an Achilles heel, even in a dream FA scenario.

But the Knicks are the ultimate toy for the uber wealthy in the middle of the city with the richest individuals in the world. I think 4 billion is a conservative estimate and it could always be a group headlined by 1 person.

But Knicks fan should be careful what they wish for. The last thing we need is another Wilpon in this city who refuse to spend money...Dolan is bad at alot of things but he's never left finances play any role in the teams roster.

It’s It’s in their bones at this point. I don’t think an athlete is avoiding the because of pressure or the media. Sure, there's pressure everywhere - pressure in New York City and pressure in Oklahoma City are most certainly not equal, though. I don't know how anyone could argue that.

My main point is that KD coming to NY and being the top dog here would be unlike anything he's taken on in his career yet. The Warriors aren't even his team - they established all of that before he got there and were already good enough to win titles. There's literally zero pressure on him there. There's 3 other big name players he can pass the buck to - and they still had all sorts of drama and issues earlier in the year.

There's not going to be a lightning-rod persona like Russ here to keep attention off him, either. He doesn't like being asked tough questions and doesn't seem to respond well when there's heat on him.

I'd have concerns about how he'd respond here if he had to face adversity and be the guy taking the majority of the blame.

He's the 2nd best player in the league and I'd surely take him - I just feel like everyone's setting themselves up for another major disappointment this summer if/when he doesn't come here.

I hope I'm wrong - I hope we get the top pick and draft Zion, I hope KD comes with Kyrie or someone else, I hope Knox continues to develop... but I'm just no longer able to anticipate anything other than the Knicks striking out. So, until the ink is dry...

I'll still have my concerns about how KD would fare here, but I'm not stupid enough to say I wouldn't pursue him as a result.

I'd rather not give up all our #1 picks, (possibly Zion) and our young core for AD. I'd really not.

Keep our picks. Keep our players. Sign FAs.
he's so damn soft
Osi Osi Osi OyOyOy : 2/8/2019 1:07 pm : link
I honestly don't think he can handle NYC. The media has treated him with kid gloves considering what they could really say, if you look at his twitter history this dude is out here arguing with 12 year olds and whining at every given moment.

He had problems with the OKC media, the OKC media lol.

If the Knicks can get him, then go get him. But his inability to take criticism will be a major issue if he plays for the Knicks.

I think that would be the ideal situation. AD is great, but having some young players on cheaper contracts to mix with high priced free agents and vets that come for the minimum would keep the cupboard stocked.
Yeah...

My main concern with KD is how he'd handle the media in NYC. He goes on & on about how he doesn't care what people say/think of him, but that's a bald faced lie. He's very sensitive to criticism.

arcarsenal : 2/8/2019 1:39 pm : link
Anyone who continually needs to prove that they really don't care what anyone thinks of them are typically the people who care the most.

I think Durant cares a great deal about how he's perceived and I absolutely think he's soft.
If knicks do not hit big this summer
nygiants16 : 2/8/2019 1:45 pm : link
Knicks will not be good in the next 10 years this is the summer someone has to come...

They have the coach every player in the league loves, they have the cap space and potentially the number 1 pick, they have some good young players...

Doesnt happen this offseason it will never happen
I agree with the premise that he might clash with the media
NoGainDayne : 2/8/2019 1:45 pm : link
but I don't agree with the fact that this might affect his game.

He's a tactician on the court. He made probably one of the most unpopular decisions in sports ever and he had ice in his veins in the championships following.

He clearly cares a lot but he can focus that energy on the court. I think it would take an almost inconceivable amount of bad press before fan 1 turned on KD after coming to NY.

And even if he was booed at home (which I also consider to be a scant chance) i'm not sure it would affect his play.

Let's not conflate a desire to be liked off the court and play on the court when there has been zero evidence of this to date.

I think he would be fine, there would be such a long honeymoon that he would be treated like a king just for coming here and if he brought someone with him they would win so he wouldnt have to worry....

ARod wasn't known for handling the press well

Bay Area isn't exactly a small market. Durant deals with a ton of media attention and scrutiny from both the local and national media. The Warriors and Durant have done just fine.

What adversity is he dealing with there?

They're defending Champs, they have several titles in the last few years, and they're probably going to win again this year.

The Knicks have been in peril for like 25 years. This fan base is desperately seeking a savior.

The Warrior fans were not. They didn't need Durant. He was a luxury that made their team unfairly good.

We NEED him because we haven't won jack shit in 50 years. There will be no grace period here. Knicks fans are starved for success.

It's not large/small market thing. NY is different than any other local media market I've lived in or spent considerable time in. The media in NY loves trashing the teams. Absolutely loves it. For the most part every other market will write puff pieces about you until you leave town or horribly miss expectations year after year. The national media is a different beast and is much more similar to how NY operates.

There is criticism everywhere, but only in NY it seems like a competition who can shit on the local teams the hardest. Than you have the interesting rivalry between each teams designated lackeys in media vs those reporters.
Whether he can handle it or not I don't know
moespree : 2/8/2019 2:13 pm : link
BUT, I believe him and his team have been plotting a move here this summer for years. This is not going to be some fly by night decision. The evidence suggests it's been in the works. From business dealings, to comments by his agent, to things his friends have said on social media, all of it points to this being a calculated business decision that was made some time ago.

If I am correct on that premise then you'd have to think he and his team have had some time to think about what the media, fanbase and reactions will be and how to best handle that. Whether he can or not, I don't know.

that is why it only works if he comes with a 2nd guy or the knicks trade for AD...

Interest from the Knicks?
The narrative that Durant can't handle New York is one of the dumbest
Mike in NJ : 2/8/2019 3:00 pm : link
takes I have seen in a while. The guy has been in the national spotlight his whole career. He is the best player on the best team in the league, but as was pointed out earlier, Durant is the A-Rod to Steph's Jeter. All the heat, all the criticism, all the frustration whenever there is any, gets directed at Durant. Sure he has let it ruffle his feathers occasionally like he did this past week, or goes after 12 year olds on Twitter, but it has never effected the performance on the court.

The one positive thing you can say about Dolan in this situation is that if there were ever an organization that was willing to insulate their guys from the media, the Knicks would be the one. Don't like what Stefan Bondy has to say? Don't let him in the building. Sick of Frank Isola criticizing the organization? Keep him away from the team. Durant won't be grilled by the media because the Knicks, for good or for bad, have never let the local media treat their team that way.

Interesting since Begley said they had no interest in trading Frank. I wonder who's right.

On another way more important note, did anyone listen to Lowe's podcast today? He had Marks on and they were talking about how Knick fans would riot if this summer goes wrong for them. Marks commented that it still could go wrong and Lowe replied "we'll see" in such a way that he was clearly indicating that he knows something and it isn't going to go wrong.

LOL. I almost fell off the treadmill laughing when Lowe said that because I legitimately, 100% could see that happening. I might even join in.

a grace period. But if KD comes with Kyrie and/or KD, that's a 55 plus win team overnight & most of us would be over the moon. Now, if they get to year 2 or 3 & they haven't won a championship, the aggravation would grow. But there'd be a honeymoon phase.
