The Week 1 Guide to the Alliance of American Football

Just when you thought it was time to pretend to enjoy basketball for the next three months: We have more football!

The Alliance of American Football league gets started this Saturday night on CBS to kick off a 10 week regular season featuring eight teams that resemble throwback Backyard Sports create-a-team options:

Arizona Hotshots
Atlanta Legends
Birmingham Iron
Memphis Express
Orlando Apollos
Salt Lake Stallions
San Antonio Commanders
San Diego Fleet
The league features a number of new rules that seem to be designed around increasing the pace of play and eliminating kicking:

Extra point kicks are gone, so every touchdown will be followed by a two-point conversion.
Kickoffs are also gone. Instead, teams will start with the ball at their own 25-yard line.
Onside kicks will be replaced by the option to attempt a fourth-and-10 at the teamís own 35-yard line.
The play clock will be 30 seconds compared to the NFLís usual 40-second clock. The are also no television timeouts and reportedly 60% fewer commercials.

Mike Martz, Dennis Erickson, Steve Spurrier, Tim Lewis, Mike Riley, Rick Neuheisel are among some of the coaches.

Everyone's favorite, Michael Vick is the offensive coordinator in Atlanta.

Will you guys watch this weekend?

I was surprised to see that the NFLN
smshmth8690 : 2/7/2019 2:29 pm : link
is airing the league. They will have a game on this Sunday at 8:00PM.
Two others will be on CBS on Saturday night, and Sunday afternoon at 3:00 on CBS Sports. I'll watch, or at least record the games, and jump through them the first week. If it looks even ok, I'll keep watching.

Yes, I saw a show on the league this morning, part 2 actually, and they were mentioning fantasy football. I'm not sure of all the details, but it will be through the AAF app, and will deal with real time play calling. They were talking about predicting plays, based on algorithms taken from NFL games. I'm not sure how it will work, but if your prediction for the next play is correct, you will win. One weird thing though, if you predict a play that is not likely to be called by the coach, and for some reason they call it, and are successful, you win more. Both shows are on again later tonight, I think on CBS Sports, if anyone is interested.
Fantasy football

for this league shows that the old adage about a fool and his money is spot on.
I got the Salt Lake Stallions +5 against the Arizona Hotshots

Game starts on CBS at 8:30.

Hey, not unhappy to have football on a dark February night. Hopefully it's a crisp, fun product.

I actually think this is going to look mostly like actual football and won't be that gimmicky.

Polian said he hopes that down the line, this will be a developmental league for the NFL - sort of like a minor league.

Not sure if this will even exist in 5-10 years - but I can see myself actually watching this. I won't have any interest in the new XFL. That's too blitz-y and arcadey for me.
