NFT: So where do Bryce and Machado end up and when?

CMicks3110 : 2/8/2019 8:50 am
interested in hearing people's guesses. Spring training is close, has to be any day now.
alright since no one is biting

i'll say Machado to ChiiSox and Harper back with Nats
Machado to Philly
Metnut : 2/8/2019 9:09 am : link
and Harper stays with the Nats.
You would think this would all end soon.

Philadelphia is committed to spending money, so I would guess one of them winds up a Phillie. My guess Harper.

Machado hurt himself with his comments. It looks l8ke the rumored 7 year $175 Million from Chicago is in line. Maybe not on the table anymore. Machado is going to follow the money and my guess is white Sox
How much

longer does this all play out do you think? next week??
JD Martinez signed late in February
gmen9892 : 2/8/2019 9:16 am : link
Last year. My guess is by the end of next week. The MLB offseason is terrible.

Why is it terrible? I think it’s great teams are now trying to be smarter with their money. No more 10 year deals is good for baseball. Take the Yanks. I love what they did. Bullpen additions def at 2b and trade for a pitcher. No bad Elksbury deal. Plus it gives a team like the White Sox a chance to get in the mix.
Machado goes to Phillies
nyjuggernaut2 : 2/8/2019 9:26 am : link
Harper re-signs with Nationals.

Going into off-season I thought Machado would be a Yankee and Harper would wind up in Philly, but now that the Yanks appear to be moving on from the Machado sweepstakes, I think he finds the most money in Philly. And I thought Harper stays in Washington now, as it seems they have the best offer on the table for him.

is right, the average salary for MLB players is rising inline or above the other major sports, only the "mega deals" are becoming less frequent and if you're a player or a fan that's a good thing.

it's good for everyone, except of course if you are Manny Machado or Bryce Harper (etc.), but they are the minority.

Are you going by the report weeks ago? That was wrong. The deal from the White Sox was in the 200s.
The only thing I would think about changing
MetsAreBack : 2/8/2019 10:51 am : link
is the draft pick compensation former teams get for losing players. Sometimes that ends up keeping a marginal but still helpful player unemployed.

But as far as these mega deals - fuck them. Fans have to pay $100+ a seat plus $25 parking plus $100 in concessions... to watch a marginal .270 hitter with 20 HRs get paid $15 mil+ a year.

Its a disgrace - I'm sure this trend will lead to a work stoppage though. And its not like the owners are innocent.. I dont see any owner passing on these savings to customers.

I didn't mean terrible in terms of the new trend of not overpaying players. I can care less what they get, and actually thought MLB contracts were getting ridiculous. I meant in terms of overall excitement. This off-season, much like the last two years has dragged on at a snails pace and the MLB couldn't drum up less enthusiasm going into the 2019 season if it tried. Compared to the offseason that the other 3 major sports have, the MLBs is so drawn out and uneventful for a large portion of it.

Telling my wife about how great a player he was. If you’re old enough to remember Mantle, Mays, Kaline, Clemente, Robinson. I’m sure I’m missing some. Before that Williams, Musial. What do you think these guys would be worth today considering what Harper & Machado are asking

That last part is exactly why I don't understand why fans ever bother to get frustrated by their teams' payroll decisions as they relate to the cost of attending a game.

Those are typically a completely separate line of business with a completely different P&L. Sure, the owner sees the bottom line that includes both budgets, but the head of ticketing at any professional sports franchise isn't looking to reduce your ticket prices just because the team went bargain hunting in free agency. Their goal is to generate as much ticket revenue as possible (and most have MBO bonuses tied to that). For their purposes, the roster is just a marketing tool to that end.
they may not "pass on the savings"
UConn4523 : 2/8/2019 2:50 pm : link
but keeping costs down sure as hell makes it easier to run their business, just like any business.

This is simple for me and I broke it down more in depth a few weeks ago. The Yankees won 100 games in a season with a bunch of injuries and down years from 2 key players. In this 100 win season the yankee attendance was 3.48 million. The year they won the WS (2009) it was 3.7 million. In 2014 they won 84 games with a $258m payroll, attendance was 3.4 million.

The data shows there's no reason to increase payroll as more wins doesn't = more attendance. The stadium is more costly than ever to run, people can either afford it or they can't. If I were the Yankees I'd keep payroll low too.

I just don’t know where Harper fits in with the yanks. I want him too but where would he play? Can’t play right. He’d be a mess in left most likely. Center? No way. That leaves first base. You’re going to break the bank on a guy and then play him at a new position? Weird.

Machado makes more sense despite most of our misgivings...

Weird feeling about Harper and the Yanks... if no one is going to swoop in, I could see Cash making it happen. It sucks that the positional fit isn't easier, but with a player like Harper, you find a way. I guess we'll see.

I personally don't think we need either guy, but the way things are going, if someone is going to get one or both of them for significantly less term than was originally being floated, I'd like to see the Yanks get in there.

Nats offer was a pre-FA offer. I can’t imagine they will resurrect that offer based on the way FA has transpired. Only way Harper can save face is to go for a shorter deal at a similar AAS.

I’m all for athletes making what they can, but spending on star players was out of control and unsustainable. From a competitive standpoint this could make the game more interesting as it could put middle-market teams in the running to keep or acquire FAs. Hell, the Padres met with Harper.
