NFT: Video Game Thread: Apex Legends

Apex Legends was released out of nowhere this past Monday, a brand new class based (similar to Overwatch) Battle Royale FPS game on PC, PS4, and Xbox for free. The game is developed by Respawn, of Titanfall fame, and published by EA. With no prelaunch advertising, it climbed to the top of Twitch with over 500k viewers, and boasted 1.5 million players within its first 24 hours. Also surprisingly for EA, the loot boxes are entirely cosmetic Ė no pay to win in this game like Battlefront. Iím not saying this is a Fortnite killer, but this game is going to compete. Itís the real deal for sure, and has a AAA level of polish.

Anyone play this game yet? I'm looking forward to downloading it and giving it a shot. Watched a stream earlier and it looked pretty good.
I just cant get into Battle Royale games

but from what I played of Apex Legends it was pretty fun.

I have been playing The Division 2 Beta and absolutely loving it. The depth of the beta is unreal and I cannot wait for the full game next month
Fortnite blows

Apex is so much better but it has its issues, primarily the contrasting colors of the characters blending in with the backgrounds. CoD Blackout is the king right now, such a well executed battle royale.
H1Z1 is my favorite battle royale

game right now. It was a free game with PS plus. I couldnít get into Apex at all.
Not a huge battle royale fan either

but I think this game is pretty fun and probably the best of all of them at the moment. Really liking the class system, the jumping together as a team, the ping system and the respawn system so you're never really out of it if your team sticks together. Plus you get XP for how long your squad survives which is nice.

I'd like to see them incorporate solo, duo and quad teams soon though. Supposedly solo and duo are already in the works based on the datamining people have done.

Apex has been beating Fortnite pretty easily. All the big Fortnite streamers except for one or two have jumped over to Apex for the time being. Fortnite has proven it has pretty strong staying power, and it's still a monster, but Apex is the first real game that has hurt it.

ďwell executed battle royaleĒ

L O L.
Donít get me wrong, itís fun. But the game BARLEY gets updates to the map, barley any new weapons or perks. The looting system on consoles is still dreadful. Itís a good game but far from well executed.
I was speaking to the gameplay

and I agree on the updates, Iím on Apex now and talking to my friend about CoD needing to bring something new. But I like the CoD mechanics much more and the use of vehicles makes it more interesting.
I played a little bit

Reading about the game, I thought it was going to be a loser: no mechs (even though it's set in the Titanfall universe), nothing really novel, etc.

After playing I can see it remaining very popular. It's super polished (especially if you're coming from PUBG land) and they seem to have found the right combo of ingredients. There's a really great implementation of marking locations, loot, and enemies so that you don't even really need a mic to play.

I think Apex will take the biggest bite out of Blackout's share.

Gameplay-wise it's a cross between Overwatch and Blackout. The looting, movement, and gun play are very similar (they have former CoD engineers), but packaged with the classes and the setting it's just a lot more fun to me.

The streamers are all over Apex since it's new, but I can see the viewers sticking it since it's pretty fun to watch too (unlike BO in my opinion). You can tell guys like Shroud are dying to play something that's not PUBG.
I really don't like Fortnite much

but it's hard to see them getting dethroned. The building mechanic kind of puts it in it's own category and they can just devote their entire staff to cranking out new content. It attracts kids and adults.
Streamers are all over Apex right now because EA is paying them

To play it. Literally.

They opted to pay streamers a little money to play their game at launch (sponsored streams) rather than any sort of traditional marketing plan.
Got my first W last night

end of game battles are super intense, working together and using your special abilities are crucial. Still not sure if Iím playing because I enjoy it or because itís the new shiny toy, but Iíll keep it up for a bit.

Hopefully it forces some updates on CoD. Iíd also like to play quads on APEX although it seems like Solo and Duos will be first.
This looks like a Borderlands battle royals, with its

Although that is probably true, most streamers are playing the game cause it is the hot game people are all talking about. Bethesda also payed streamers to play Fallout 76 and that game was crap and it didn't make it popular cause Ninja and some of the other streamers promoted it. Apex is popular cause it is a good game and is basically a better version of Fortnite cause of the ping system.
Its fun
LawrenceTaylor56 : 2/9/2019 12:44 pm : link
but man I suck at battle royale games. I don't know what is good loot and what is bad loot. Trying to watch some streamers to pick up a few tips.

Anyone on PS4?

Supposedly that's over now and the top dogs are playing on their own accord. We'll see in a month or two if it holds up. Everyone jumped ship for Blackout for a little while.

Aside from the fun of a new game, streamers stand to gain audience share if they can become a top player in an up and coming game. Trying to break in to Fortnite streaming for example would be extremely difficult at this stage.
