Apex Legends was released out of nowhere this past Monday, a brand new class based (similar to Overwatch) Battle Royale FPS game on PC, PS4, and Xbox for free. The game is developed by Respawn, of Titanfall fame, and published by EA. With no prelaunch advertising, it climbed to the top of Twitch with over 500k viewers, and boasted 1.5 million players within its first 24 hours. Also surprisingly for EA, the loot boxes are entirely cosmetic – no pay to win in this game like Battlefront. I’m not saying this is a Fortnite killer, but this game is going to compete. It’s the real deal for sure, and has a AAA level of polish.
Anyone play this game yet? I'm looking forward to downloading it and giving it a shot. Watched a stream earlier and it looked pretty good.
I have been playing The Division 2 Beta and absolutely loving it. The depth of the beta is unreal and I cannot wait for the full game next month
I'd like to see them incorporate solo, duo and quad teams soon though. Supposedly solo and duo are already in the works based on the datamining people have done.
“well executed battle royale”
L O L.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s fun. But the game BARLEY gets updates to the map, barley any new weapons or perks. The looting system on consoles is still dreadful. It’s a good game but far from well executed.
After playing I can see it remaining very popular. It's super polished (especially if you're coming from PUBG land) and they seem to have found the right combo of ingredients. There's a really great implementation of marking locations, loot, and enemies so that you don't even really need a mic to play.
I think Apex will take the biggest bite out of Blackout's share.
Gameplay-wise it's a cross between Overwatch and Blackout. The looting, movement, and gun play are very similar (they have former CoD engineers), but packaged with the classes and the setting it's just a lot more fun to me.
The streamers are all over Apex since it's new, but I can see the viewers sticking it since it's pretty fun to watch too (unlike BO in my opinion). You can tell guys like Shroud are dying to play something that's not PUBG.
They opted to pay streamers a little money to play their game at launch (sponsored streams) rather than any sort of traditional marketing plan.
Hopefully it forces some updates on CoD. I’d also like to play quads on APEX although it seems like Solo and Duos will be first.

Although that is probably true, most streamers are playing the game cause it is the hot game people are all talking about. Bethesda also payed streamers to play Fallout 76 and that game was crap and it didn't make it popular cause Ninja and some of the other streamers promoted it. Apex is popular cause it is a good game and is basically a better version of Fortnite cause of the ping system.
Anyone on PS4?

Supposedly that's over now and the top dogs are playing on their own accord. We'll see in a month or two if it holds up. Everyone jumped ship for Blackout for a little while.
Aside from the fun of a new game, streamers stand to gain audience share if they can become a top player in an up and coming game. Trying to break in to Fortnite streaming for example would be extremely difficult at this stage.
