originally appeared. It appears Foles would probably want a long term contract agreement with the other team if he's tagged and traded. Otherwise it could become very mucky refusing to sign the tender until the last minute screwing up the trade.
After reading that, they better have a trade lined up to a place he wants to go if they tag him. Otherwise they are really screwing themselves for free agency and the season, since they'll need to cut $20MM of salary to fit his tag under the cap.
They'd be better off just letting him go and taking compensation next year.
There's zero reason for Foles to cooperate with the Eagles here Â
He's going to want to choose where he goes and negotiate the best deal he can. Plus, he's not going to want to hobble whatever team he goes to by making them give up picks/players.
I really don't see a way for the Eagles to make this happen. The potential to screw themselves with a cap hit is huge.
basically means that they wont be able to franchise and trade him. I found this interesting:
Quote:
a Foles franchise tag would put the Eagles roughly $20 million over the projected salary cap. Several contracts would need to be restructured and/or players released just to be able to carry Foles' cap number for as long as he remained with the Eagles even if he was dealt as soon as the 2019 league year started.
giving up substantial assets to acquire Foles. They have a team that can win now with a competent QB and Foles can do that. But for teams like the Giants and Redskins who aren’t ready to win, a 30 year old game manager doesn’t seem like a good fit.

Skins can’t afford a FA like foles. They are probably going with whoever falls to them In the draft. And I just hope they don’t fall ass backwards into a good QB that nobody was certain would be good. Like Lock dropping to them and turning into a super star.

Not advocating for Foles to come here but a guy who went 350+ passing yards back to back in the NFCCG and Super Bowl shouldn't be dismissed as a game manager.
Philly is $16M over. They are going to have to do something to get far enough below the cap to sign their draft picks. I don't see how they can keep Foles at his rate. Too much money invested in the QB position.

How did he do the week prior to that against Atlanta?
Or his 4 picks in two games this postseason?
Or his regular season performances this year against Atlanta, Tampa, and the Rams?
If Jacksonville gives up more than a 3rd for him they are out of their minds.
The perception of Foles is very skewed. There were several games where he actually totally sucked but most of those flew under the radar since they were standard, non-primetime/non-playoff games.
Most impressions of him are what they are because he had his best regular season game vs. NYG in 2017 and then got hot in the postseason and that's when most people were watching him.
This year, he was really not good in the regular season when he took over for Wentz. He was shitty against the Saints in the playoffs. He had a couple of good performances against TB and HOU - TB's defense was a fucking sieve this year. That's really it.
Anyone who pays this guy big money is making a very, very big mistake. And if it's us, I'd want Gettleman fired immediately.
the Giants damn well better protest if the Eagles tag and trade him. There is no way they or any other team in the NFC East should allow that to go down. That should apply for every other team in the division they trade him to in that scenario.

Pretty sure the Eagles will have to let him walk in FA and accept a 3rd round comp pick. That's it.

Agreed.
