Bob Costas and the NFL - Must read article

dep026 : 2/10/2019 11:06 am
I donít know this author of the article hence why it is really.

Must read. Costas is legendary and one of the best ever. Love the no holds bar honesty in this article.
Bob Costas at his best - ( New Window )
Costas is a condescending piece of shit...
EricJ : 2/10/2019 11:26 am : link
and will not read anything from him or about him... period.

No hostility towards you at all Dep...
Costas is so god damn smug.

Didn't realize he hated football before because of the violence. What a gigantic pussy.
Good read, thanks for posting

Never been much of a fan. Speaking out against football while cashing in on football is a nifty trick. What a righteous fella! Kind of like that televangelist who was condemning homosexuality on the air and smoking meth with male prostitutes at the Super 8 motel. For such a little man, Bob Costas rides an extremely high horse.
Yeah, heís smug and smarmy
McNally's_Nuts : 2/10/2019 12:14 pm : link
but nothing in that article is incorrect.

And it really shows how much of a worm Goodell is
Really loved Costas as a kid. I really enjoyed his work

Glad I read it.

I've never been aligned politically with Costas, but did admire his position on this concussion matter.

While I agree those who get involved know the risks, the business model of the game still exploits that talent too much for my tastes.

The rosters need to be expanded, contracts need to be fully guaranteed (which may require shorter terms), the hard cap needs to be replaced with a softer cap model, etc.

No way you can guarantee contracts in a salary cap NFL. The risk of injury is just too much. You'd have to make contracts waiveable against the cap in case of injury and that opens up another can of worms.

I do like a softer cap that rewards teams for drafting well and benefits players to stay with their teams. Bigger rosters is a no brainer honestly. It keeps players healthier and makes the product better when injuries do happen. Of course the owners will be against both those ideas because it won't financially benefit them.

Never met Costas, but have met Lupica several times. One of my best friends used to be one of the top people who ran the NYDN sports department, so we attended several events with Mike. Mike is a nice guy, but he has an ego that can go around the world several times and he loves to talk about himself.

He's definitely benefited from the the rise of sports writers becoming celebrities - started with the old Sports Reporters show - and he loves that recognition.

Iím in the minority, but love Lupica
Costas versus Howard Cosell
Ron from Ninerland : 2/10/2019 1:59 pm : link
At one point in his career Howard Cosell became very critical of boxing. His biggest, but not only objection were that fights were allowed to continue that should have been stopped. He was concerned about the injuries to overmatched fighters. Unlike Costas he took himself out of broadcasting boxing. Later on Cosell even admitted that his disdain for boxing was related to Ali's injuries making it an emotional decision for him. BTW, I remember that long before Ali was diagnosed Cosell commented that Ali's speech and pronunciation had become noticeably labored.

Compared to Cosell. Costas comes off like a pompous ass. He wants to have his cake and eat it too. Others have made suggestions on how to make football safer, but Costas apparently felt the need to call attention to himself by simply declaring "Football destroys brains". Then he adds insult to injury by suggesting that anyone who disagrees with him is equivalent to thinking the world is flat. Did he say he no longer wants to be involved with football ? No. Has he made suggestions on how to make football safer ? Perhaps he has at some point, but not in this interview.

Howard Cosell could be an obnoxious jerk, but he was an honest jerk. As for Costas, I don't know if he believes what he's saying or if he just wants everybody to think of him as a deep and thoughtful guy, leading to a book deal.

I am not in love with Lupica but can tolerate him much more than Costas. One of the things that really irks me is when a sports writer or broadcaster thinks that the audience cares at all to get preached to about unrelated topics.

So he would take then pay check of if could have? Speaking out made it ok? Please. Thereís almost no no way to know how many players issues ma have started in HS and college. But the NFL is evil. No one else. But he doesnít mind making money off of it.

Maybe not the biggest hypocrite ever but his coming out like this just means to me heís a pile of shit. Please Bob. We donít miss you. Go back to Oz

i knew someone who knew Costas personally. said he was a true baseball lover. reads every newspaper every single day. overall a very nice guy.

personally Bob Costas can go fuck himself.

last summer olympics he referred to FYROM as Macedonia and saying King Philip of Macedon won medals for this country in the first olympics.... me being Greek know thats not remotely true and literally assigning the history of one country to a completely different country.

THE FACT THAT HE'S GREEK and said this makes it a hundred times worse.
I've never had a problem with Costas,

Little doubt the direction that this one would go especially comparing him to Lupica, who I like as a writer and hate as an opinion writer.

Costas should just stick with baseball, it is where he is best.
