NFT: Coffee with grass fed butter and coconut oil...anybody?

chopperhatch : 2/11/2019 5:47 pm
Also known as "bulletproof coffee" but that's a knobby nickname and I don't repeat knobby things. But does anybody use this as a meal replacement?

I generally like to go on a quick run (5k or so)to start my day on a mostly empty stomach. But I have a protein shake with a scoop of sugar free peanut butter because I also believe that exercising without ANYTHING for your body to process cant be good. At the same time, I prefer a cup of black coffee to jumpstart me. Btwn the shake and the coffee, I usually have to wait a while because I am loaded with about24 oz of liquid.

The grass fed butter, coco oil, coffee thing seems like the perfect way to start my day with a meal replacement and a coffee. I can do my run, come back and eat a regular breakfast and then later on, back up that meal with a pre-workout meal before the gym around lunch time.

Sorry for the dearth of detail, but I feel good aboutmy regimen but am always looking for ways to make it more efficient.

Thanks for any input.
I personally love it
Ssanders9816 : 2/11/2019 5:51 pm : link
But Iím also fat adapated on a Ketogenic diet. So yes itís a perfect start to the day and keeps me full until lunch if not later.

Now for a standard regimen I can not speak to the benefits other than MCT oil being an extremely healthy source of fat fuel. Just keep in mind the added calories and fat consumption you are getting when factoring it into your everyday diet
I think it does keep you fuller

Which is where the Bulletproof Coffee came from. Another thing I do is make these Keto Bombs which work great to curb cravings and gives me energy on top of tasting great:

INGREDIENTS
Ĺ cup organic virgin coconut oil
Ĺ cup natural peanut butter or almond butter (with less than 5 grams of sugar)
2-3 Tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
2-4 tablespoons Agave (or sweetened to taste)*note* If using these in a Keto diet you'll need to go with a keto-friendly sweetener like Stevia. Just sweeten to taste)
Splash of vanilla extract (optional)
INSTRUCTIONS
In a large skillet over low heat melt coconut oil and peanut butter.
Stir in cocoa powder.
Stir in agave.
Remove from heat and add vanilla extract if using.
Pour into a spouted cup to make pouring easier.
Pour mixture into silicone candy molds. (my mold holds over Ĺ tablespoon)
Freeze or refrigerate until set.
Remove from molds and store in the fridge in an air tight container.
Eat one fat bomb to curb the appetite or satisfy your sweet tooth.

Matt, the grass-fed aspect of the butter has to do with th. e higher concentration of Omega-3s found in cream produced by cows were fed only grass. Just an FYI
I'm not on a keto diet really ...
chopperhatch : 2/11/2019 5:59 pm : link
I am just looking for I'm more time conservative and less substantial way to combine a meal with my morning coffee. I still plan on eating fairly lean with with whole grain carbohydrates in limited fashion, but I am by no means looking to go on to a completely keto Centric diet. I would definitely follow up this coffee regimen with a fairly lean meal or two until several hours after I've had the coffee

Yea Uconn, I had eliminated sugar from my coffee some time ago. I got a french press and love the additional complexities you can get out of freshly ground beans using that method. Recently I have been trying to eliminate half n half as well and have been pretty successful. Occasionally I throw a touch in. But rarely. Typically I have ONE cup of coffee a day and then drink iced green tea. So Id love to cut out all of the dumb shit that I put into it.
If you just commit to drinking coffee black
Oscar : 2/11/2019 6:26 pm : link
You will get used to it fairly quickly. Makes ordering coffee a hell of a lot easier too.

Pretty much there.
My problem is a drink a ton of coffee
UConn4523 : 2/11/2019 6:29 pm : link
so trying to do this at work will be a nuisance. I drink it for the taste, donít need caffeine at all (although the caffeine is needed to get the benefits apparently).

Yea see I brew my own iced green tea and drink like 3 quarts of that over the day.

UConn, you can get one of these blenders and bang out that coffee in no time. I use it to make shakes at work.

Thatís pretty dope. For the green tea do you use one of those Mr. Coffee Iced Tea/Coffee machines?

Anyone ever tried Matcha?

Nope. Either electric kettle into a deli cup (plastic quarts) or instant 180 degree water from the coffee machine.

Macha is a little smokey for my liking. I used to do a combo of white tea and green tea with spearmint and lemongrass. Now I use a couple Tetley's Black and Green pouches as well as two bags of Tazo Zen. Its so fucking refreshing and really keeps you going without the crash.

Some great ideas. I love tea but hate buying the big jugs (especially with aspartame). Much rather brew it myself and add some honey or Swerve.

No sweetener dude. Its the only way to go. I pound that stuff. I will only put some honey in my tea if its hot and if I have a sore throat.

Well honey for the health benefits. And Swerve is naturally derived. I also use monk fruit sweetener on occasion. Never anything artificial. I havenít been off sugar long enough to just go cold turkey. Itís been a battle to say the least. Sugar is a powerful drug. And just as deadly

it's as close to sugar as you get, without being sugar. The only downside is that some percentage of the population can't digest it properly and has stomach discomfort and gas, but luckily I'm not one of the affected ones.

I don't do the bulletproof coffee but mostly because I'm not sure about the amount of saturated fat in coconut oil. I know everyone's on the MCT train these days, but that's one shit-ton of saturated fat in a small dose.

I only touch sugar with the occasional dessert for the most part. Like out to dinner, holidays, and one or two ice creams a summer. Im pretty okay with that.
Stevia...but don't buy the cheap shit it's not the same thing
Zeke's Alibi : 2/11/2019 8:31 pm : link
Sweetleaf is a brand found many places. Some of the population thinks it tastes bitter, but if you are one of the lucky ones you have found a zero calorie natural sweetener without any health drawbacks.
I used to drink macha a ton. It was great.
robbieballs2003 : 2/11/2019 8:33 pm : link
But it is a little process. I put it in a bowl and whisk it. I tried doing some different stuff in it like ghee, or turmeric with pepper, or cinnamon. I settled on a cinnamon stick. Green tea really suppresses your appetite but I don't think doing it right is good for something you can make quick. Also, if you do it on an empty stomach you can get nauseous.
I didn't know this was a thing
idiotsavant : 2/11/2019 8:43 pm : link
But, as I'm trying to nix the milk and milk products, I was at someone's house and put two spoons of the solid coconut oil into my coffee just because it was there.

Yum!

Well if youíre referring to Keto, itís not a fad. Itís been around since the 1920s and is backed by medical studies. And its also common sense as to why itís effective.

Coconut oil is one of the healthiest oils you can eat. Hydrogenated coconut oil is terrible for you like all oils. The used to do this to stabilize it because coconut oil is liquid at 75 above and solid below.
Should read all hydrogenated oils.

tbsp of MCT -much healthier then coconut oil
scoop of collagen peptides

Good quality coconut oil is very healthy, but that on top of the ghee-

well I don't like the taste. So I substituted a rounded tbsp of coconut milk powder (about 3 grams of carbs) for the coconut oil and I'm happy with the result.

Forget the processed stuff that we all know is shit for you.

I mean the virgin coconut oil, cold pressed organic or what have you.

There's a lot of press that says it's good for you - but none of it comes from what you'd consider very reliable sources and I haven't seen any actual studies that confirm as much. Meanwhile - you have basically an entire day's saturated fat in one serving.

While I know fats have been over vilified for their role in atherosclerosis and high cholesterol, there's still guidance to avoid eating too much saturated fat (particularly from animal sources, but overall as well).

Here's an article, thought it focuses entirely on cardiac health.

Where have you read MCT is ďmuch healthierĒ than coconut oil? Many MCT oils are derived from coconut oil. Iíd say MCTs are a more efficient source of fuel but that doesnít necessarily make it healthier. Coconut oil has its share of benefits, one being you can cook with it.

unsweetened coconut milk. It tastes awesome. I also like almond milk but for whatever reason it mixes poorly with coffee. Definitely want to try the bulletproof coffee.

To the fad diet comment, every person processes food differently. Some people feel better on the keto diet (low carbs) others need a high carb intake. To each their own.

Mct is NOT healthier than coco oil per se. It just contains 100% medium chain triglycerides (the omega 3s....brain power stuff) vs 65 for coco oil. However coco oil has the antioxidants and auto immune stuff that fights germs.
MCT and omega 3 aren't the same thing.
Zeke's Alibi : 2/12/2019 4:54 pm : link
As far as MCT vs coconut oil, coconut oil has more health benefits. However if you are looking to get ripped MCT is a better choice on a per calorie basis.
