Down 23 points with under 9 minutes left in the game. Just a miraculous comeback in Duke History. 15 turnovers and 11 steals by Duke in that stretch. Just wow.
was in 2001 when Duke rallied from 10 down with a minute left to beat Maryland. I was at that game. I thought Gary Williams was going to have a heart attack...

Yup, I was watching that game. Terps had a great team that year too. What a disaster.
should be a really good basketball team. They have the top 3 recruits.
Here's the thing - they should win it all, or be a threat to win it all every year, yet twice in this decade, they lost to seeds in the teens in the first round - Lehigh and Mercer, and were beat by South Carolina in the second round.
I remember in the 80's people would knock Jim Boeheim for underachieving with talent, yet why does Duke, who annually boasts a top 3 recruiting class not get the same scrutiny?
They are averaging a Championship every decade, but shouldn't the top team every year be doing better than that?
They are set up for success by getting the top recruits and getting overseeded nearly every year and still have had some terrible defeats in March.

I remember that Mercer game vividly...a table full of us were at my friends sports bar and there was a Duke fan sitting in front of us alone..probably took his lunch break to watch, as I believe it was a Friday afternoon game...anyway we are cheering like crazy for Mercer and the dude was literally in stunned silence with tears in his eyes.

I don't think that is completely fair. Duke has won their fair share of Championships and has been well represented in the final four. In fact, Duke has the single highest winning percentage in the NCAA tournament. To answer your question, No, you can't do better than that. It's not like Kentucky and UNC are just folding the tent because they can't attract good players.
The game last night showed how a solid team on any night can beat superior talent, and that is why you can't ever predict the NCAA tournament. I think most would agree that Duke would probably with a best of seven NBA style series against just about any team right now, but that is not what the NCAA tournament is about.
As a fan who watched Syracuse in the 80s, when the ACC/Big East rivalry was running strong, ACC fans had nothing but respect for Boeheim and those teams. You can't sit there and say that Duke has not accomplished what it should have accomplished, but Syracuse did.
Syracuse accomplished what they should have?? They played in the toughest conference in the nation and had pretty good results. What I'm saying is Boeheim was often criticized for not winning more with the talent he had.
I think it was a poor argument anyway as Syracuse alums who were successful in the NBA were far less numerous than other powerhouse schools, as well as the fact that I think Cuse only had the top recruiting class one time, and it led to their championship.
Duke has won a lot. But the point remains that one of the best teams in the nation lost to a 15 seed and a 14 seed in opening games. And Duke has had the top recruiting class 4 times in this decade. The #1 class.
what would people say if the Warriors get bounced in the first round a few years, or if the Pats lose an opening playoff game? Honestly, in relation to the talent, if they aren't in the Final 8 every year, are they really meeting expectations?
I notice that you are partial to Syracuse in a good way. Are you an alumnus of the school? I always look forward to your comments in regards to my old school, as you bring up points I may have forgotten. So, thanks for that.
Duke is terrible and teams like Kentucky and Kansas and all the others with one-and-done players are just fine.
I’m not sure what rock you’ve been hiding under but people have been ripping Calipari for years. This thread is a Duke related thread, why would anyone be discussing Kentucky? Just a stupid, stupid statement.
I grew up in Upstate NY and they were really the only college team to follow. Plus, my Dad went there for Grad school, and we've gone to games together up there for years.
Syracuse accomplished what they should have?? They played in the toughest conference in the nation and had pretty good results. What I'm saying is Boeheim was often criticized for not winning more with the talent he had.
I would not put that criticism on Boeheim, great coach.

1991
Yep. And people to this day still mention it as a black mark on Syracuse's legacy.
It's really OK, it happens. It doesn't say anything about the program unless it is a sustained thing. That loss pales in comparison with '96, '03, '13, '16. Duke's early exits pale in comparison with the overall record.
I am just trying to say that I think you are on shifting sand to say that Duke has not been an incredibly successful basketball program. It can be irksome to non-fans, I get that. For me, I am tired of the Patriots and the Yankees irk me (Mets fan here). But I am not going to argue that the Yankees are not historically the best franchise in MLB.
If you want to be the scum of the earth and call yourself a Duke fan, man up and be open about it instead of pussyfooting around with all the "Gee, Duke is such a great program" bilge.

nice. classy.
I am a Duke fan, I thought that was obvious without stating it, but if that is what you need, here you have it.
Wooden shouldn't be on such a pedestal. Look at the talent he had! NBA superstars abound. Now look at Coach Knight at Indiana. 3 championships with how many NBA all-stars? 1. Yes Duke SHOULD be winning more with that talent.
As a MD alum I've had mixed feelings on switching from the ACC Â
to the B1G. I miss the rivalries, but being from the NY area I didn't have a big connection to the ACC before I went to school there like the MD area people. I love that virtually every game is now on TV with the B1G network. That all having been said, one thing I love about it is I don't have to see nor care about that Duke or that rat faced F%&*k Coach K for most of the season till March Madness...

Believe this was the same weekend as the Giants-Ravens Superbowl, correct?
terrific comeback by a bunch of one-and-dones who will not stick around to take their Spring exams at a supposed, alleged Top 5 national "university."
The best was last night with 10 minutes left ESPN was making excuses for them because their one hour flight landed two hours late (close to midnight on Monday). I guess getting proper rest and practicing in the opponents gym day of game is more important than getting these players to class and leaving for Louisville early afternoon on Tuesday.
for starters, I'd have expected them to finish first in the ACC sometime this decade
Quote:
I'm curious. How would you actually measure Duke's underachievement?
2010, 3 ACC tournament championships, also 2 NCAA championships since 2010.
Tournament championships are irrelevant - especially the major conferences where teams are battling to -gasp- be a 2 seed instead of a 3 or 4. They are done to generate revenue and placate alumni.
True league champions are determined over the course of an 18 game regular season.
Personally, I prefer when UNC goes out in a semifinal .. why waste energy and risk injury playing for a third straight day in a meaningless game.
I agree. For the most part, great kids with the exception of Grayson Allen, great grad rate and their coach is a class act.
I don't like them because they are a bunch of floppers and the whole lot of them whine over every, single call when they get 99 percent of the calls in their favor. But noooo, if that 1 percent goes against them, you would think they are victims
I agree. For the most part, great kids with the exception of Grayson Allen, great grad rate and their coach is a class act.
Great grad rate? I mean, i have no doubt that the white kids on the end of the bench that only play in November against West App State do graduate.... but what an odd thing to say about a program that has fully embraced one-and-done for almost a decade now.
Classy stuff like lecturing a player from a team that just beat his, then lying publicly about what he said. Like petitioning the NCAA to have the 1994-95 games removed from his holy coaching record and making his low-paid longtime assistant the scapegoat. Like lying for years about Terry Holland playing Ralph Sampson all game in a 109-66 UVA blowout win over Duke in the 1983 ACC tournament, when in fact he played just 18 minutes due to foul trouble. Like subjecting the student sportswriters from the Duke newspaper to an angry, profane tirade because he was pissy about a critical story. Like blaming Roy Williams for Gerald Henderson cheap-shotting Tyler Hansbrough and breaking his nose, because he didn't take Hansbrough out of a game Carolina was going to win.
RE: RE: RE: I find the Duke hate pretty humorous. Â

You guys are both wrong. Duke and Notre Dame both have an over 80% grad rate for black male athletes.
Try again Greg. You're a hater and your team still is the only one seed to get knocked out of the tournament on day one.
A great coach gets his players to play above their talent level Â
The players are amazing, and desrving. The school and conference are awesome. It really is just one guy making 25M/year as one of the biggest pretenders in college basketball.
A great coach transforms assistant coaches into good coaches
Coach K hasn't done that.
A great coach is an inspiration to everyone who plays the game.
Coach K just sucks at that.
I don't like K and think he's a phony fraud ... but this take is absurd.
Chopper - your 80%+ black male stat is basketball only or all Duke sports? What time horizon? Because ... again... Duke has embraced the one and done for a decade now. And does anyone really care if the end of team benches (guys 10th to 15th on the depth chart) graduate or not? They're on the team to mop up against terrible competition and play scout team in practice.

basketball has a 100% "GSR Rate" from 2008 to 2011, but look at the disclaimer:
Quote:
Graduation Success Rates include student-athletes who are on scholarship their first year and who graduate from their respective university, or transfer to another school or leave to play professional sports while in good academic standing.

Fatman, I understand your skepticism, but the same article had UNC as 14th in the ACC using the same metrics and FSU as dead last.
that if you have 5 guys leave for the pros, as long as they were in good standing, they count as "graduating".
Yea gotcha there. However I would think that those numbers should be affected by football and baseball programs too...both of which UNC and FSU are far superior than Duke. But I accept your point that it prob isnt all a result of Coach K's influence and guidance.
My stance is hes a good coach, a good guy and have no problem giving him the credit.
Plus, my alma mater didnt have to deal with them year after year. Now Nova on the other hand.....lol.
Good coach - yes, of course. Hall of Famer obviously. Â
Just FYI
That was unreal.
I agree, fuck them.
The important thing is that the Ville easily covered. But they will never be the same after this.
