Yankees general manager Brian Cashman announced to the media Wednesday that outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury won’t be reporting to camp until next month, as he’s currently being slowed by a case of plantar fasciitis (link via Dan Martin of the New York Post). It’s not yet clear whether Ellsbury will be ready for Opening Day, nor is it clear how much playing time would be available to Ellsbury considering a Yankees outfield mix that features Aaron Judge, Aaron Hicks, Brett Gardner and Giancarlo Stanton (with Clint Frazier also looming in the minors). Ellsbury seems poised for a bench role after missing the entire 2018 season due to injury (most notably including hip surgery).
The injury news didn’t stop there for the Yanks, either, as right-handed pitching prospect Mike King has been shut down for the next three weeks after an MRI revealed a stress reaction in his right elbow. He’ll be re-evaluated after that three-week down period. The 23-year-old King posted a ridiculous 1.79 ERA with 8.5 K/9 against 1.6 BB/9 in 161 1/3 innings across three levels last season, topping out with a brilliant six-start run in Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. |
What a disaster Ellsbury has been. Stealing money like Carl Pavano.

Mr. Glass
You can't say DL any longer.
I can almost predict that when it becomes necessary to put him on the 60 day DL, we will hear how in ramping up his training, he strained a knee/ankle/other body part in compensating for his plantar injury and will miss 4 months.
Ellsbury is playing along because he has no pressure to return and gets paid for it. The Yanks likely have a deal with Boras to release Ellsbury at the end of the season- that last year is a sunk cost, but so be it. Eating $21M in 2020 and $5M in 2021 is not as big a sunk cost as eating the whole $47M due Ellsbury.
Both sides get what they want- Ellsbury doesn't have to embarrass himself losing out to Gardner/Frazier for LF and hurt his ability to market himself this coming offseason as "healthy" and a starter level player. If he can't beat out those two, he likely will have trouble finding a job. If he can blame injury, at least teams can dream on the 2010-2014 version of Ellsbury finding lightening in a bottle.
The Yanks get their insurance on 60-70% of the contract and everyone is happy.
Short of Cessa getting hurt or having absolutely nothing this spring- or the Yanks signing a FA/making a trade, Cessa is almost assured a roster spot in April.
Remember Cessa is out of options and must pass through waivers before the Yanks can send him back to the minors- and some team would claim him for nothing.
The Yanks options are limited- they can keep him on the 25 man roster and hope he shows enough to hold down a spot and eventually become tradeable- or they can lose him via trade or waiver claim. Those are basically their only remaining options.
Yeah, in a good year, inevitably 2 or 3 pitching prospects will undergo surgery. In a bad year, well, let's not think about it.
Remember that last year, Albert Abreu (granted, he had an appendectomy- does that count?), Glenn Otto had surgery for a blood clot in his shoulder, and I think Perez had shoulder surgery.

but until it happens you can't get too animated about it. It's ST, not uncommon for kids to come in with nagging stuff.

Agreed. I always feel for players who have to fight a body that won't keep up with their drive to succeed. That said, Ellsbury got paid for one season no one thought he would ever come close to duplicating.
Albert Belle remained on the disabled list, he wasn't officially released. When Prince Fielder was in essentially the same situation, I think the Rangers worked out a settlement with the insurance company so they actually could release him. No idea if they took a haircut on the insurance payout so they could do that.
Stress reactions are bone problems not ligament problems. Stress reactions are irritation at the back of the ulna bone. Stress reactions can turn into stress fractures which do require surgery. They can be treated by rest and therapy.
Yu Darvish had a stress reaction injury last year and it had nothing with his reconstructed UCL after Tommy John surgery.

Talked to someone with knowledge of the ongoing Harper Machado saga. He doesn’t think it will resolve until mid-March.
Ridiculous.

What kind of game readiness will those guys be in if their spring training is all of 10-14 days before Opening Day?

Have those lines moved a ton recently? I have no idea what the odds have generally been so I’m curious to if they’ve swung significantly, which could be telling if so

I know that. My question was, are those odds in line from where they’ve been or has there been a recent shift? I’m just curious as to whether the Yanks have always been such strong favorites or if something made them move the line recently. Either way, no big deal
Anyway, looking forward to baseball since football and basketball haven't exactly been rewarding to the local fans in the last couple of years.
