NFT: ‘Yesterday’ - Imagine no one but you ever heard The Beatles

Ira : 2/14/2019 3:04 pm
There's a mysterious global blackout after which a young musician is the only person who knows about the Beatles. A movie called 'Yesterday' directed by Danny Boyle comes out this summer. The trailer is linked below.

Yeah, it's an interesting premise. I've pondered what it would be like if I had the chance to go back in time and steal some awesome movie or song... I think ultimately a lot of people would be haunted by the knowledge they didn't really earn the ensuing fame and fortune, and others would be able to construct a belief system to justify it.

It wouldn't work, in all likelihood. Performance, production and time of release all matter.

Jailhouse Rock taken away from Elvis and out of 1955, or Like a Rolling Stone away from Dylan and 65' or Yesterday away from McCartney and 66...

You'd be lucky to find a recording contract with any of the above today.

The Beatles are not the greatest band of 2019. They were the greatest band of their time, and measured by impact and quality over that time, yes - they are arguably the greatest band of all time, reinventing themselves multiple time, driving changes in music, recording techniques, fashion and pop culture, and influencing countless musicians to this day.

Funny to see one opine that if the Beatles didn't exist, the Stones would be the greatest - shit, son, the Stones wouldn't EXIST. For nearly a full decade they were the Beatles puppy, they were the students, they mimic'd and copied until they finally became the monster they were. There would have been no Beggars Banquet - Exile without that decade of learning.
wow, to say the Beatles are overrated
Dr. D : 2/15/2019 2:22 pm : link
is crazy enough, but to say you would rather listen to the Eagles and Billy Joel? Whaaaaaaaaaa?

Persoanally, I can't stand Billy Joel, but it seems obvious to me that he was greatly influenced by the Beatles and I wonder if he would've ever known how to write a song if the Beatles hadn't shown him.

Yeah, that's definitely the interesting part of the thought exercise.

Even assuming the person is a gifted multi-instrumentalist, and even if he were able to engineer it himself or communicate the song's existing vision well enough to a producer, there'd certainly be little nuances in each instrument he wouldn't be able to capture. Would he think his version is better or worse for it?

The trailer shows him performing Something... that song just ain't the same without the electric guitar production and McCartney's bass. And for all the shit Ringo gets, even his feel isn't the easiest thing in the world to replicate.

I definitely don't like them. But the market speaks for itself. Just because I don't like them doesn't mean they are overrated. I actually don't get them at all. They make decent mellow music. That's all I hear when I hear their songs.

"I've got two guys here that claim the songs are theirs". But on the talk show he sang Something, written by George. Should be 3 guys.

who's to say the two guys are Paul and Ringo.

in their R&R based phase, but if you can find half a dozen songs worth listening to in their psychodelic phase, good for you. I like McCartney, hate Lennon, and Ringo and George had maybe 2 decent songs apiece on their own. I'd rather spend an evening with the Eagles, Beach Boys, Billy Joel. Maybe the Beatles instituted some creative things, it's just not stuff I'd choose to listen to. Yellow Submarine, Hey Jude, Lucy In The Sky, Sgt. Pepper, all bore the hell out of me. To each his own.

Those are there low hanging fruit type hits. Yellow sub? No.

I think it was McKee here i always forget the handle but he framed the Beatles so well by saying no one had a better batting average.

Listen to every album twice. Especially rubber soul and all albums that follow. I can rattle off probably 40 awesome songs that aren’t considered singles. Actually that’s hard to do because all they did was create singles.
We could start a game (just to prove a point)
djm : 2/15/2019 8:22 pm : link
Name an awesome Beatles song alphabetically. In order to qualify it can’t “really” be a single or total household name but someone here has to vouch for its endearing qualities. We can disqualify any song we want if we deem it too popular. The only reason the game is difficult is because beatles songs are just too popular.

I’ll start

A - across the universe
(Too popular? Ok fine)
And your bird can sing

B....
The song has to begin with the letter B and so on
djm : 2/15/2019 8:26 pm : link
Can’t be too popular but someone here has to love it. Anyone? B is a layup for me.

And z is disqualified

I just got home not long ago from a gig at a new venue with one of my cover bands. During the course of the night we played Something (love playing the bass in that), and A Day in the Life, as well as Band on the Run and Jet from McCartney & Wings, and Instant Karma from Lennon. That, along with some Tull, Genesis, ELP, Yes, and other assorted goodies, and it was a fun Friday night. :)
We will never find peace

in the Middle East, if we are going to pin the Eagles vs the Beatles, especially if some don't even like either.....

Growing up, I initially hated the Beatles....probably from jealousy of the way girls reacted to them.....

Later I started to listen to the words and music and was hooked....

There were so many diverse singers/groups I liked.....Beatles......Bread.....Elton John.....Journey.....Billy Joel....Eagles.....Celine.....Hell, I even liked Glen Campbell.....

Only robots can be programmed to like only one group or singer......humane nature makes us run the gamut of endless choices.....and like this board, defend them to the death....

are a great band, but the rock and roll world would have been fine without them. They were incredibly popular, and that ensures they had influence on music, but there still would be music (IMO, more or less the same) without them.

some of you make it out that we'd be tapping two rocks together if they hadn't existed. In that sense, they are indeed over rated.
