I was thinking about our safety group and what it could look like if we didn't resign Landon Collins.
What if Gettleman doesn't want to invest big money for Collins? Given Better's track record it seems coverage is much more of a priority. Landon Collins was on the trade block last year for a second round pick.
The real question is what could our safety group look like if Landon Collins isn't back in 2019?
Firstly, I don't think we let Collins hit unrestricted free agency, I expect he will get the franchise tag. If we can't get an affordable new deal (which I don't expect), I think we trade Landon Collins for a 3rd round pick, possibly to a team like Green Bay for pick #75 (interestingly similar to the trade value we got for JPP).
If Collins departs, we would target a couple of veteran free agent signings. The two guys with the obvious ties to the current Giants are Tyrann Mathieu (Bettcher/Cardinals ties) and Tre Boston (Gettleman/Panthers ties).
From a contract perspective, I would expect deals something like:
Tre Boston
(contract similar to Taushaun Gipson: five year, $36m, $12m guaranteed)
2019: $4.3m
2020: $6.3m
2021: $7.05m
2022: $9.05m
2023: $9.3m
Tyrann Mathieu
(contract similar to Devin McCourty: 5 year/ $47.5m, $22m guaranteed)
2019 $6m
2020 $8m
2021 $9.5m
2022 $10.5m
2023 $12m
Us$9.536 millioning these contracts as a guide, we could sign both Boston and Mathieu for $10.3m in cap room, which is less than what it would cost for the franchise and similar to the transition tag for Landon Collins (the 2018 safety franchise and transition tag numbers were $11.287 million and $9.536 million respectively).
I expect we will also look at adding a safety in the draft, most likely with our second round pick (or trading up into the late first round). There are a few good options in that range including Deionte Thompson, Nasir Adderley, Taylor Rapp and Chauncey Gardner-Johnson. The guy that seems to be the best fit for me is Nasir Adderly who seems to be a S/CB hybrid much like Budda Baker and was coached at Delaware by new assistant DB coach Henry Baker.
Tyrann Matthieu, Tre Boston, Nasir Adderley, Michael Thomas and Sean Chandler would be a solid safety group.
Not sure how big of an impact the young Jackson and Guyton would have playing in the backfield of this current Giants D... ya know, as opposed to behind a front 7 with Marshall, Howard, Banks, LT, Pepper Johnson, plus Collins and Walls at the corners?
Parts of his game reminds me of Will Hill.
I think we need to keep him. He's our only solid guy back there (even with his coverage limitations). We need help safety as well, draft or FA.
Jints could explore moving Webb or Haley to S and drafting a pass covering cb in addition to a pass covering S
Janoris, Beal (being optimistic), Collins, H. badger and Co. would give us a good 2ndary.
using one of the 4ths & 5ths to find some CB depth and a FS to groom would be ideal.

He's a good player, a team leader, a good guy, and our secondary will completely suck without him.
Didn't it suck with him?
Collins has had one good season. When everything around him was going right. Other than that, he's been a plus run defender and a negative in coverage. But yeah, lets pay him as a plus player in both categories.

I hate this option. So, what if a team signs him to a big deal that would have netted us a 3rd round pick in 2020? We lose out on that comp pick because he was tagged. I am not 100% sure that is correct but I think it is. Carolina lost out on a comp comp pick when Gettleman FTed Norman and then withdrew it. Either let him go or FT. If yoy FT him then I would absolutely shop him around.

There is talk of using the transition tag, which allows us to match any offer receives and keep him.

Compensation picks are given out for the overall net loss and gain of free agents. They are not given out for every player that leaves.
For example, if we sign a stud RT that could cancel out the loss of Collins.

You don't improve an area by getting rid of your best player, you get rid of your bad players. If you keep dumping your best players because "the secondary stinks anyway", the unit never gets better
Would you trade Jamal Adams for a 3rd RD'er?

Sorry wrong. You cut or release your bad players like in Flowers. You trade your good players to get high draft picks or other good players. Getting high draft picks for good players is not dumping them. Teams needs change every year and that team has to adjust. Collins should be tagged then traded. They can easily get a younger Blue chip DL or LB. Their front 7 needs more work than their D backfield. This draft is loaded with front 7 talent. The Giants had no pass rush meaning the CB's and SS had to cover Receivers sometime for 5 seconds. I don't care who you have back there that's just too long. Now if they get a pass rush like the Ravens or Eagles then who you have back there isn't that critical. Case in point: The Eagles played the Giants with 3 unknown secondary players who they plucked off the street 5 days before the game. It was a College secondary and they held against the Giants because the Eagles had a good front 7.

In another thread you reminded yourself Landon is a free agent and can’t be traded. But here you expect a 1st rounder for him?
Thinking before posting isn’t your strong suit, is it
You’re correct. White was a former second round pick who was slated to start. Guyton was a 7th rounder I believe? Jackson a 3rd.
