cap room - Pat Leonard's article

Andy in Boston : 2/15/2019 9:58 am
I believe there are more options to get more cap space.

Rhett Ellison is due to get paid $4.4 millions this year.
I can't see that happening.

Any other ways to get cap space other than what Pat described?
copy of the article would be nice

I would like to keep Rhett
NYG007 : 2/15/2019 10:17 am : link
at 2m, which he would take and pay Jessie James 4m per for 3 years. He is a top 10 Blocking TE who has great hands.
Rocky...it was under Friday Reading

Rhett Ellison is a good TE

They will pay him that money.
interestingly
Rocky369 : 2/15/2019 10:30 am : link
after the top 10 highest paid players, dead money for Snacks, Apple, and Omameh count for $7.5M this coming year. Otherwise, the only other two big hits that jump out were just signed, Ogletree and Martin.
FYI

Thank you Tampa!

Ellison and Vernon should be on the chopping block. Hopefully DG can work a trade and get something for Vernon — a 3rd would be nice.

Eli, Vernon, Jenkins, Ogeltree, Ellison...cut all of them.
I agree

If these and others are not the future they should be in the past.
I think that Ellison is worth his cap hit. We need a good blocking TE
yatqb : 2/15/2019 11:52 am : link
and unless we get one in the draft we only have one competent one on the roster in Ellison.

I would be willing to trade Jenkins, as I feel he's a declining player. If we traded him, though, we'd need to hope that both Beal and any CBs we draft can actually play.

For me, Trading Vernon depends a lot upon what comes in return. I would not cut him, though.

No disrespect, but why on earth would anyone take on his contract nevermind giving any draft choice?

Ellison is not worth a 5.75M cap hit.....
Doomster : 2/15/2019 12:35 pm : link
He has not blocked as expected and one freakin' td just does not cut it....you can get that with a drafted rookie....

If the Giants even think of trading OBj, then DG should immediately be fired for signing him to the contract in the first place....

You can cut/trade players to create cap room....but you create even more for holes for a team already loaded with them....

I agree too. Time to cut dead weight. Vernon is too often injured, Jenkins is starting to look old, Ellison is simply overpriced, and Eli...do I have to explain that one?

The same could’ve been said for JPP last year.

Maybe a team values his skillset more than the Giants do. Maybe a team thinks his cap hit is reasonable as is with the Giants eating the bonus portion.

I could see a team like the Colts who are desperate for an ER with a ton of money to spend trading something for his rights.
Ellison is not as good as his reputation would indicate
Ten Ton Hammer : 2/15/2019 1:58 pm : link
For that money he should be paving roads.

He's good, not THAT good.

What a stupid comment before free agency, the draft, OTA's, Training Camp or games. Why will the Giants not be contenders? I expect this team to improve dramatically.

Explain Eli? Who is playing QB? Clearly you don't understand football if you believe he is truly the issue
People want to cut some of our best defensive players

1 Jon C is one of most respected posters on this board, he doesn't deserve that.

2 3-13 5-11 the last 2 years. We are number of players away from contention in key spots.

Obviously someone cheap and terrible because hey, Giants will be bad anyway!

I don't get cutting everybody. Eli gets cut then what, sign who? Who plays QB? I swear to f-ck if someone mentions Teddy Bridgewater again.

That's a good point and I partially agree however it should be progressive. Removing under performing players ie players not living up their contracts should be a priority this offseason.

If you cut those 5 players,
Doomster : 2/15/2019 10:23 pm : link
you create 28M in dead money, added to the 9M already there....we had 43M in dead money last year with all the turnover.....

Not only do we create even more holes, but we have even less money, due to the dead money, to replace them.....

This is a point without meaning.

People who expect this team to be competitive next season are delusional. A "big improvement" would be winning 5 games. That's as many as they have won in the past two years.

The only reason to focus on dead money is if you are trying to bring in enough FA to make a run at a playoff spot. However, if you already know the team will be bad, you take the medicine now- clear away the deadwood and cap hit- and stock up on young players and undrafted FA to prepare for a time you will be competitive.

The team has more holes that a single off-season can fix. It will take at least 2, maybe 3. Dump players who are not going to be useful parts of that team to make cap space for the day when you will be good enough to add quality FA.
dead money
fkap : 2/16/2019 5:06 pm : link
is on the books regardless. what matters is the net savings vs what it would cost to replace a player.

Take Vernon. It would be a cap hit of 19.5 mil to keep him. You save 11.5 mil by cutting him. The 8 mil dead doesn't matter except to calculate the savings. The real equation is what you can buy with 11.5 mil. If you can get equal output for a lower cap hit than 11.5, you do it. If you can't, you don't. The hope, though, is that you find a better player.

Don't fixate on dead money. It's a sign of bad decision making in the past, but it shouldn't stop you from making (hopefully better) decisions now.

I tend to agree. I do believe Eli will come back to play for one more year. He won't take a paycut and the Giants have limited options. In this scenario, the Giants take a QB in round 1, hopefully after trading down with a team that wants say QB Murray who will be there at #6 (his height and sleight frame will cause him to fall to #6 and some time will try on him anyway, just not the Giants...??).

If we get rid of dead money by moving players that we don't see as good fits for this team, we are likely better off for 2020, a year where we should have good cap space if we don't overspend in UFA 2019 - and I don't believe we will.

Rhett isn't worth $4.4 at this point; however, can we cut him and replace him with a clearly better player for a good price? That I'm not so sure of really....???

But getting a good blocking TE is "KEY" for a good off-season and for Barkley. Just look at what Gronkowski does as a blocker in the Pats run game. I would love a Howard Cross with slightly better hands right now....
