NFT: Final guitar purchase (for the rest of my life)

Rick5 : 2/16/2019 9:18 am
So my son auditioned for the high school music academy jazz program in my area last month. It's a competitive program that draws from the whole region in my area. You spend half the day at your regular high school and half the day there. I told him if he got in, since it would be such a big deal, I would buy him a Gibson ES-175. We got the great news late yesterday that he is in!

Last month we played an absolutely perfect 2013 wine red figured Gibson ES-175 at the local guitar center. I was elated to find out it is still there. I put down the deposit last night on the phone and will pick it up tomorrow. My son's guitar is better than any of mine now. At least I can borrow it - LOL. It's a great weekend here in my house!
Very cool

I had a 1969 ES-175 for a while. I stopped playing jazz so I sold it to one of my good students. It was a beautiful guitar.
awesome!

Ever notice how perfect Steve Howe's tone is no matter what string or fret he's on? Yes' music is brilliant in large part because of Steve's "Mr Gibson" 175. Great purchase!
Very cool!

Nice guitar too
I love the back story of ES-175s
sb from NYT Forum : 2/16/2019 12:06 pm : link
...ES stands for Electric Spanish (Spanish because you don't play it flat on your lap like you would a "Hawaiian" guitar) and the 175 was the original price ($175).

You are a great dad BTW!
Cool!

The guitarist from my favorite band, The Disco Biscuits, plays and ES 175.

Congrats!

It's incredible!

My dad created many great memories for me when he was alive. I am sure my son will remember this day long after I am gone. This is a guitar to last a lifetime.

Wow!

Thanks! This was a real find at my local Guitar Center. I didn't want to buy until the summer, but I couldn't pass this one up. They told me it was from a collector who developed some health problems and needed to sell it. It's a 2013, but I swear it doesn't look like anyone ever played the thing. Even the case doesn't have a mark on it.
Congrats!!

That is awesome news Rick5! Beautiful guitar choice!

Its awesome to have a son that shares your passion and has the talent to achieve that goal! Congrats to him as well!

I don't think I will ever utter the words Final Guitar Purchase in my life.. I know my wife wants to hear that from me...

I am thinking about selling my 1928 Martin...

Yeah! Really looking forward to eventually doing something like you do with your dad. He had to play two tunes for the audtion. I played with him on one of the two --- Monk's "Blue Monk." His other tune was a solo arrangement of Autumn Leaves. I am the only guitar teacher he's ever had, so this has been gratifying on multiple levels. He'll be better than me by the end of high school. :)
