Yup. He played well last week too. He looks like the best guy on the line.

Another mistake wipes out a gain. Such a frustrating team so far.

Oliver looks really good, though.

Oliver has scatback qualities to him that I like. Am I crazy for thinking Giants could improve their bottom of the roster quickly with a few shrewd signings out of this league?

Yes. These are all practice squad players who are no better than what the Giants have on their practice squads. You are just reacting to seeing football played. Honestly it feels like the level of play got way worse from week 1.

I would take 26 Summers over a guy like Riley tomorrow. At least, Summers is in the vicinity of the ball when it is thrown and doesn’t shy away from contact.

I saw a draft profile from last year where the writer suggested FS would be Summers’ best position. Kid spent a season on the PIT practice squad. I think it’d be an upgrade. And if it doesn’t work out, you cut him?

All this team does is shoot themselves in the foot and fail to capitalize on mistakes. Zero problem moving the football and then as soon as they're in scoring range, they start moving backwards and then something goes wrong when they try to kick it. Bad hold, miss... ridiculous.

The defense is dominating but you can't ask them to do this for the rest of the game.

My best guess is they get into FG range with time winding down to tie it and either miss or it's blocked.

Either that, or they'll just turn the ball over before they even get there.

I watched him at UConn for his four years and he went backwards some as a senior, but was considered a first round pick after his Sophomore year. He might be worth a look for sure at free safety

LOL this is the part where they start moving backwards again because they got into FG range.

Incredible.
.
arcarsenal : 2/16/2019 4:53 pm : link
Now they'll miss the FG or it'll get blocked. This is too far away again. There has been a fucking forcefield aroind the 30 all game long and they can't get inside of it and stay there. Every time they get in there, they get penalized or get sacked and move back out.

That was so bad that I'm not sure I can even watch any more of it. The inability to catch a football, hold onto it, get plays off before the play clock expires.. just super basic shit that these teams can't do gets maddening to watch.

I was encouraged after the first game I watched last week in terms of quality of play - I thought for the first game it was decent.

But watching these QB's try and execute the most basic shit is painful. Makes you appreciate how good the pros actually are.

There’s so many stories like this. Who knows why his upperclassman years weren’t his best? Injuries? Partied too hard? Girlfriend broke up with him? Who knows? But this league might be a gateway for guys like this to get back in the NFL.

The Giants should absolutely do their due diligence on players in this league. After all, where are the 86 Giants without USFL guys like Oates and Carthon? It’s easy to say, oh that league sucks, our practice squad is just as good.

You never know.

Quarterback play isn’t great. But you have to remember. Limited training camps, very little chance to establish continuity and rhythm with receivers.

I think there’s tools there. Your team is especially prone to errors of the weird variety. That fumble that Summers caused for the TD changes the game.

I'm just glad that wasn't the Giants... or even Bama. If I watched either of those two teams do what the Stallions did today, I might really have punched a hole in a wall. And I barely get miffed at losses anymore... I get over it easily.

But holy shit. It was surreal the way they would just find a way to blow chance after chance to pull away and take control of the game. It was like I could see how they were going to lose 3 quarters away from when it actually happened.

They would do so many good things - the OL run blocking was outstanding, the defense was really, really good.. but the way they would just take penalties, drop passes, fumble the ball, miss kicks, and botch snaps at the absolute most inopportune times imaginable was fucking mind blowing.

Even late in the game, on a crucial 3rd down, he's got a guy wide open on a shallow drag route and one of the linemen manage to knock it down.

They had a drive stopped deep in Iron territory, Perez basically threw a no look pass on 3rd and 7 off the wrong foot with pressure in his face - literally just trying to get rid of it and Richardson winds up with it, the Stallions LB/S misses the tackle and the guy is 43 yards down the field next thing you know.

The fumble on the punt return was exactly like the muffed punt last week.

Even big plays in the passing game the WR would have one foot OOB by like an inch or the QB would just overthrow a TD by a literal fingertip (he had Denham open in the endzone early in the game and he overthrew him by less than a yard)

I just can't even explain the way every single thing would be like... just out of reach, an inch short, hit a post, miss being down by a centimeter, etc.

I'm glad I'm not actually attached to this team - that really was one of the most frustrating things I've ever watched in my life as far as sports go.

Rant. Fucking. Over. :)

They are so fucking annoying to watch. I'm still annoyed just thinking about the 10 different times they just needed to make a basic football play that would have increased their win probability by a healthy % and couldn't do it.

The schedule to open hasn't been easy, either - two road games against two teams I think will be near the top of the league in ARZ/BRM - and then finally a home game in Week 3 against Arizona...again. Whom most people have as the top team right now and had them as the top team going in.

SLC is probably looking at an 0-3 start which is probably going to be pretty crippling in an 8 team league.

They actually looked like the better team for a good portion of the game today - but when you can't hold onto the freaking football and can't make routine plays in key spots, you deserve to lose.

I'm pretty sure the guy who was supposed to be the best WR on the team is hurt right now. Kenny Bell. Kid out of Nebraska. The Bucs drafted him a few years ago in the 5th round. The guys they're using right now cannot possibly be the best guys they have.

Pierson-El seems like a guy they need to get the ball to more - but he's also the one who got stripped and basically lost the game. Jordan Leslie seems to make a couple of plays here and there and then just totally vanish.

Branden Oliver looked excellent and the other RB was pretty good too. Matt Asiata is a useless pile of garbage. I still can't believe he fumbled on his first carry in that key spot.

I still don't really understand why Erickson had Linehan as Woodrum's backup in Week 1, and then had Allen get the nod over Linehan today when Woodrum couldn't go.

So, right now, the Stallions are without their starting QB and top WR... which they could probably use pretty badly next week.

I'm sure I'll watch again and they'll probably drive me nuts again.

It also has just been incredibly hard to push the ball vertically. A lot of these teams are running tampa 2 concepts and dropping their MIKE deep and have 2 safeties up top at basically all times. The only place you can really throw the football is underneath.

I'm seeing SO many screens, drag routes, and short crossing routes. Deep posts are just running straight into coverage zones.

It's just a lot of drive concepts where the deep route sucks the top of the defense upward and creates an umbrella with space underneath for a short pass. Tons of pass plays outside the hashes are just not working. A lot of the QB's are struggling with those throws and the routes just aren't really open anyway.

Great analysis.

I guess that only being able to rush 5 also limits deep shots in that you are never going to get burned by sending a bunch and having m2m on the edges.

Yup, the blitz limitations have a lot to do with it.

I thought SLC had the right idea today against the Birmingham 3-4 - they were keeping 2 TE's in line and essentially "split" the Iron's 3-4 to create space in the middle of the field which is where they found a lot of running lanes.

The HB counter they were running with Oliver to the left was working really well.

Toss plays and trying to beat them off the edge just wasn't working - you wind up with them having a lot of matchup advantages with faster OLB's beating linemen to the punch.

They just can't threaten anyone with any of their outside WR's right now which is severely limiting what they can do.

Hopefully Woodrum stabilizes the QB position a little - he's definitely the best guy they have. Erickson was afraid to let Allen throw the ball anywhere beyond the sticks. I think maybe 3 or 4 pass attempts weren't of the "safe" variety. You can't win games playing like that with your QB and such little impact from your WR's.

going back to shotgun on the first drive of the half is just crazy.

Hackenberg locks on to one receiver in the spread and doesn't seem to deviate.

If he can't make progressions, quick hitters out of the I are better -- at least Zona has to respect the run then.
